Today was a mermazing day and we just need to thank so many people. Our team is participating in the FIRST EVER published study that looks at mermaid tails! We are working with a group of engineers, staff, and students, from Dalhousie University in the Aquatron based at the Steele Ocean Science Building. Thank you to the Aquatron team, to the engineers, to students, to faculty, and tothe Mermaids too for making this possible. We gathered some amazing data today and combining science with mermaid tails is one of the coolest things ever. Thank you to Merbellas Studios Inc who gave permission to have their tails be the center of this first study... soon to be published. The data we're getting is going to change the tail making, tail swimming, and monofin world. So amazing to be part of something like this, and to have access to such an awesome facility. (Image posted with permission of all involved, and the University.)
I'll post more specific info once I get my photos ready to post up!

Grats Raina! Hopefully something like this is more solid information for tail bans. And people to do actual research of it, rather relying on that one video on youtube, and media scares. Cos that's what got Australian pools in a tizzy over it. Fear, ignorance, the media being misinformed and scaring everyone causing tail bans. Everyone insisting they'll drown in one.
*sigh*
I do hope too, that the Australian Lifeguards read your study and make a proper decision over it, instead of being scared to make a point.

The scientist in me is so excited! I imagine extra fins create extra drag. They look so pretty but I'm considering sacrificing fancy fin add ons for free diving performance. Would be great to know how fluke shape affects performance! Too bad they can't test different monofins, that probably has the biggest effect.

Our extra fins we do have are super tiny, I dont find they make a difference personally (not sure what the data will say) I mean, fish have extra little fins too haha. But when I see other tails (not ours) with giant fins on the side etc I know they create drag for sure.
just from what I experienced doing the study (again, not official data) the monofin and fluke type seemed to really be the things creating drag. Mimi was even able to go faster in bare feet no monofin than one of the tails lol.

The aeronautical engineer in me is really interested in this. (Don't let the "aero" fool you. I work with water too, for example, I designed the propeller, shroud, and body shape of this: http://www.rasmuscatalog.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?rasmus764/11232).
Are you doing anything to separate the effects of drag from the effects of propulsion efficiency? For example, do you get up to speed, the put yourself into your best glide position, and see how quickly you slow down?
Looking forward to results!

Yes coast down would be great! This is what I want to know more about for freediving, where your goal is to use the least amount of energy/oxygen. I might be able to find some research specific to monofins, but would like to know more about how it translates to tails.
For example, I've already found some good information from triathlon wetsuits. I did the swim leg of a triathlon once and the wetsuits are usually designed to be super smooth and floaty like a seal. But a new study tested over 100 prototypes and found that certain embossed patterns of neoprene are actually better than flat.
As you can see, some of these are almost scale like, and they probably are inspired a lot by nature who always figures out the most efficient way! But maybe one could design a mermaid scale pattern that also decreases water resistance (though the design might have to be really tiny to work, which wouldn't be as aesthetically pleasing as big scales, and I don't know about the friction difference between neoprene and silicone...but food for thought!)

Honeycomb geometry pattern distributes water in equal 60 degree directions.
Inverted wing pattern can partly heighten water resistance through movement of inner arms."

Well, there have actually been swimsuits with a shark-skin-like pattern embossed. They apparently worked so well that they were banned in competitive swimming some years ago :P .
EDIT: Found the swimsuit. The one getting the most media attention was, as I recall, the LZR from Speedo, which led to some FINA rule changes in 2010.
Even if Wikipedia is no prime source, here is the article to that suit: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LZR_Racer

You're right that it is a test developed for cars, as it is an easy way to get the drag of a car. It also lets you distinguish between rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag. Rolling resistance dominates at low speeds, and aerodynamic drag at high speeds. Measuring the deceleration rate at all speeds lets you find each term.
There are very few vehicles for which a coast down test would work. You cannot use it for aircraft, as it would be very difficult to keep the altitude constant. It could be used with blimps and submarines, but I've never heard anyone doing so.
A swimming person may actually be one of the few other "vehicles" that a coast down test would would work for. It would let you tell the difference between a tail that is poor at delivering thrust, but has low drag vs one that makes good thrust, but has high drag. It would help answer the question "why am I going slow, and what should I do to go faster?"

from all my googling it doesnt seem that this is in any way a standard for how they test drag underwater. So I will say no, we did not do testing in that manner, however we are testing drag with people who specialize in hydrodynamics. Again, only 1 day of testing. So we have not even come close to covering it all.
Merman Storm

It's not a standard way of testing drag. But as long as there were swimmers with speed sensors, it would be a way to try it. You could learn something.
My guess is you will be doing tow testing, which is the standard for hydrodynamics, and can get good results.

Testing a new test that's not used that way, is a study all it's own. As I said, we're participants not the ones deciding the parameters of the study. I'll leave all that to the experts. I trust their methods and expertise.

Yes, it's true that bumpiness can actually enable things to move faster through a fluid (water or air) than a smooth surface.
Science geekiness follows here:
Dimples or raised textures can improve hydrodaynamics, or aerodynamics, by breaking up the boundary layer (the thin layer of fluid against the solid surface of the object) so that instead of flow being laminar (smooth) it becomes turbulent. A turbulent boundary layer allows water displaced by movement through the fluid to travel further around the object before it breaks away from the surface and forms a wake. This means that less energy is used in total moving through the fluid.
Perhaps the best known example of this phenomenon is golf balls. The little dimples on golf balls are there for exactly the purpose described above, and smooth golf balls travel nowhere near as far when hit with the same force. This video compares dimpled and smooth golf balls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZsvpw-JOO0
If you watched the last winter Olympics, you might have noticed that many of the speed skating suits had either raised lines called riblets, or patterns of raised dots printed onto various areas, especially the hoods. This is for the same reasons of aerodynamics. Here's an article on that
http://fuckyeahfluiddynamics.tumblr.com/post/76431312467/long-track-speed-skating-is-a-race-against-the
and for the people who really want to go full geek into the topic, this article has an extensive analysis of the concepts
http://www.biketechreview.com/aerodynamics/misc/466-skinsuits-and-boundary-layers?showall=1
So yes, dimples or bumps can actually make a suit flow much better through the water or the air, and I find the results you quoted, Hamptons Mermaid, are entirely believable. I and companions have tried the textured neoprenes, but the issue was that they weren't very good neoprene compared to some of the top end brands like Yamamoto, and I found that comfort and fit still count for a lot, especially warmth. Now if only we could talk Yamamoto or Heiwa into making a really good freediving neoprene with texture on the outer surface http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yk-OCBhm6Vw/ThS8P5sxfKI/AAAAAAAAIg4/wq9hw4d-mDI/s1600/th_zwemmen.gif

I was trying to find a "dimpled" wetsuit for some time (yaaaay speed) but could not find one.
Apparently, due to the ban by FINA or whatever, they are no longer produced, only the swim shorties.
Reading reviews of said shorties, it seemed like the speed increase was negligible for normal use, it would only be useful for competitions where milliseconds determine the outcome.
Regarding the study, this will be super interesting to read I'm sure.
I've been collecting data myself for swimming in different monofins, tails, and without for some time now to determine speed differences.
It will no doubt be enlightening to compare my findings with your data.

FINA has shut down every innovation in the world of swimming:
full-body suits designed to reduce muscle ripple,
low-permeability suits,
suits with patterned surfaces, and
they even banned those integrated swim cap/goggles combinations that gave swimmers as high as a 2% drag reduction.
In their fetish for trying to keep the sport "pure" based only on athlete training, they've retarded technological progress that could have been amazing.

Its not just swimming, its virtually every racing sport; Cars, aircraft, racing shells, bicycles, sailing, and so on. Having worked with several racing groups, I can understand their reasoning.
First, they they want to get rid of "I win" buttons. That is, someone who shows up with something new that is so good, they are virtually guaranteed a win, thus rendering all the years of effort by every other team irrelevant. If you are on the team with the "I win" button, its great. But most participants are on some other team, and majority rules.
One way around the "I win" button is to only allow innovations that are known and available to everyone. But then to be competitive, everyone must use the innovation. Result: everyone is on equal footing, just like they were before the innovation was incorporated. But, everyone spent more money. So why allow it at all? Save everyone some money by disallowing it. That's the second main reason: cost savings. Racing is expensive, and teams are always scrounging for money. Anything that can reduce costs is desirable.
The result is just as you said, loss of technological progress. In many ways, a car you buy in a showroom is more advanced than a formula one car. But that is only because there is a big market for cars outside of racing. Swimming is a little different. The average recreational swimmer does not care if they go 2% faster. However, many divers, both recreational and professional, do care for either speed , or distance. That is where technological innovations should be aimed, at the consumer market, not the typical racing market.
There are a few exceptions, such as races sponsored by the human powered vehicle association.

this is the largest research aquarium in Canada but it is rented, meaning studies can come use it like a research hotel. Nothing is kept there 24/7, it depends on the study. The water is kept at a temp depending on the study. usually about 4 degrees c. they heat it up for mermaids, but in winter it's hard to get it past 18 degrees c as the water comes right from the ocean and is then treated.
They did have a research study in there for seals (behavioural based, nothing that would harm them) and they've had injured animals stay in there for a while too. They had a greenland shark for a while, cuttle fish, lobsters... just depends on the study.

This is fascinating! I'm just curious would the drag you are experiencing from your tail be caused mostly by water getting inside your tail and not draining out quickly enough? Will they be testing that aspect of drag (how quickly water can pass through the tail) as I imagine any insights into improvement in that area could be quite valuable in terms of improving drag performance and thus mer swimming speed.

I can't say for sure as we are still testing and they are collecting the data and interpretating it, not me. But I personally feel from experience the drag comes from the fluke being too bouyant. My tail with drainage seems to drag more than even bigger flukes ( but less silicone due to shape/ mono fin) without drainage. The more we test the more I feel it isn't one trait ( eg drainage, fluke, monofin) but rather specific combinations. However these are not official study findings. Just totally my opinion.

It took a while but the video of the behind the scenes of our research study is online now. A few things to keep in mind before commenting:
1. We are their clients, not scientists nor engineers. I am not in control of the study, we are participating it and while we have our goals, the parameters are determined by them.
2. These are just SMALL CLIPS of one SINGLE DAY of information gathering. They do not represent the entire study. You are only seeing a small portion of it.
3. No, we are not studying all the mermaid tails/s fins out there. Our study is dealing with specifically Merbella Studios, and specifically the finis monofins.
4. You can ask a million questions but I am likely not at liberty to answer most of them. I put this online mainly for your enjoyment and curiosity sake. I think it's ground breaking to have mermaiding and science come together, but as all trailblazers this is just a first pass at things. Our goal is to continue to legitimize mermaid work, hopefully calm some fears over monofins, and in the end help Merbella's improve their product and possible have improvements for all monofin wearing mermaids.

I am so behind on this because I have no time to sit down and clean up photos or edit video, but here's a few things from our second prototype and more testing
The water was really warm and we had rescue divers in the water with us who kept stirring up bubbles -_- so between the white caused from the warm and people making bubbles all the photos and footage came out kinda white and grainy

Raina, did you try the sideways swimming? When I do sideways swimming with arms in front, it feels like I'm going a little bit faster. I curve the whole body like the way I've watched Misty Hyman does in her demonstration video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFnf2WRNYt4
Can you even move like that, like with more undulation in a silicone tail? Or does it always have to be straight and slow swimming? Btw, this isn't a link, I don't know how to get rid of it!!!

Yeah I do sideways swimming in my monofin and tails all the time. I have some video and we did it with the acceloremtres too so I should actually know at some point if it changes speed!

It's usually said that the bigger the amplitude, the slower you go, which is why pro swimmers aim for a fast, low amplitude kick.
But with my timed fin test I've found that it really depends- on your buoyancy, on your speed, on what you're wearing.
Sometimes, a bigger amplitude can give you more push (especially when wearing a tail) and thus be faster.
I don't think there is this recipe that's true for everyone.
Right now I'm timing myself with different fins in different tails.
I will share the results once I have them all, but it's already clear that a tail slows you down like no tomorrow.
Like, I'm faster without fins than with fins in a tail, by a large margin.
At least when I'm using a flowy fabric tail with a big fluke.

how did you specifically test speed again Echidna? We used actual testing equipment and the data goes through a system to be interpreted, in addition to timing. And we've done it over and over and over again to get our consistent results for each and every variable.
We're also testing in actual salt water, not chlorine, fresh, or bromine.

For me at least, I'm faster in my tail than I am in legs. It also depends on the monofin, my trainer and competitor are amazing, where my old fish butt tail with an oceanika was slower, but still I feel like I get more bang for my buck by being in tail.

My simple The2Tails tail got me out of a rip current in Costa Rica, while at the same time 2 swimmers and even a surfer had to be rescued by lifeguards! It was part speed, part stamina, as I did a backstroke/dolphin kick until the swell of a wave came, then I would do an underwater dolphin kick as fast as I could using the push of the wave. I have no doubt that it would have taken me longer and more effort to get out if I was just swimming.
In making my silicone tail I def want to know as much as I can about preserving the performance aspect of the monofin while balancing it with the aesthetics of a mermaid tail. Excited to see Raina's results.

It's been crazy, I will say we have tested two prototypes so far that change how you wear a monofin, to make it hands free to get your feet in and out (whether in a tail or just a monofin) cut back on the pain monofins inflict upon our feet, and expand our range of motion and ankle support. This is being combined and tested against the data we already collected of how monofins swim on their own, and how they work in tails.
So far I have found the results *interesting* based on my personal experience of testing the two prototypes. The second was certainly improved compared to the first. But personally (without having seen any of the data yet) I *feel* as though it drastically changed the way your body moves when doing the dolphin kick and I *suspect* it uses more oxygen from your body. It made it *feel* easier and I could certainly swim around with no pain, and lift flukes easily etc and get my feet in and out, but so far it made it personally feel to me like it increased how much body energy was needed if that makes any sense at all? I feel like I got far more of a workout from our prototypes. I also felt like I did turns, rolls, flips, and side swimming 1000 times easier.
but again that's just my PERSONAL experience, and not actually an interpretation of data. What I think feels harder to do, may just be different to do, and output different data.
I am really curious to see the interpretation of these first few rounds of data collection. I think it's being published sometime this week. (or submitted for publishing)

not at all, typical process when creating a new item that can be patented. I'm not required to share *everything* with the mermaid community. We put in all the work, it would suck if someone just came on the forum and benefited from all our hard work without lifting a finger.

Pending, or applied for? Because if it's pending, I'm gonna be pissed at how slowly the US Patent Office moves.
Also, I certainly hope you have a piece of the backend once their patent gets approved. I'd hate to think you were just being used and they get to profit from you in exchange for "exposure".

So (very sorry for my ignorance) is this a new thing to be used with a regular monofin yeah? Or a completely new type of monofin?

it would be an accessory adaptation that can be used on most monofins. For people just swimming in monofins it makes it hands free and more flexible. for mermaids, a hell of a lot easier to get in and out of in a tail, and much better support on ankles and little to no pain while using for extended amounts of time.
But still prototypes. Testing against all our initial data to see if we change speed and functionality etc. So far, it's just really fun. It might turn out to be crap!!! haha. I'm just gonna roll with it and see what happens. The data collection alone has been really cool and the process of testing a new device really cool.

OK guys, I got a document from the people involved and I am going to share some *select* information. As we are working on several prototypes you'll understand why we aren't sharing it all. but I'll tell you some more about the study with some direct quotes from the engineers.
in some places I am quoting them directly, JOHN T, ALEX B, STEVEN M, JOSH K 2016
The info may not flow like you're expecting and these are just from one round of things. Taking a break for the summer and going back at it in the fall. (though we're doing empirical stuff with the prototype all summer)
Data from initial testing:
Our study determined that the ergonomic of mermaid tails posed the biggest problem, as blisters would start forming on feet within 15 minutes of constant use. The energy transfer between the tails and the person was at the feet and ankle region. This is the area that experienced the most loading. (hehe I mean we all know this, just nice to have science back it up)
The prototype and suggested changes from the engineers brought the time up to 2 hours totally blister and pain free.
Our team for our purposes wanted to focus on maneuverability over speed.
“As it would translate to smaller monofins being used to provide less thrust while maintaining a smaller profile in the water so that smaller areas of water can be traversed. A smaller surface would also result in smaller drag forces”. Our company decided to prioritize this over speed in the testing because we felt our company relied more on it than speed for our intended use of mermaid tails.
The tails were 2.5% more buoyant in salt water than fresh (it certainly feels like a lot more).
As quoted from the document, these are the goals for the project that we started out with:
“
1. Swimmer must be able to swim with Mermaid tail for 4 hours (safety factor of two for average session time) with no complaints of blisters or soreness due to the foot securing apparatus.
2. Foot securing device should be able to withstand 2772 N-m moment at the connection point. This will be tested by subjecting the device to a 2705 N drag force or a deflection at the center of the monofin of 1.33 mm. This deflection was found using a carbon fiber model.
3. Prototype design must perform 20% better in timed swimming trials relative to the existing mermaid suit design.
4. A system in the tail that would allow for the adjustment of buoyancy in the water depending on the situation (accounting for 2.5 % difference in water densities). “
After some testing and realizing that #1-3 would require more work than initially expected and more baseline testing, we shelved #4 for the time being.
The engineering team came up with a few ideas that were tested to a degree but ultimately scrapped. One involved a system that would allow for buoyancy control and increased comfort in the foot pockets. In theory the buoyancy plan they had would compensate for the differences in salt and fresh water. It may still be an avenue we explore later on down the road. There’s a whole bunch of amazing data that comes with this haha but we are giving that data to merbellas first to see if they want to test that specific idea.
They also did some baseline testing on extended flukes that go way past the feet like h20.
Instead they focused on the various prototypes I’ve been sharing details about, which make monofins hands free and easier to get off and on and reduce the stress on ankles and heels.
In the testing they really did find that excess silicone past the monofin was a key problem in increasing buoyancy. They found that the foil was the most reliable in achieving maneuverability and putting less stress on the person.
Here were the main goals we looked at for testing:
“
1. Mermaids will perform time trails in three different swimming scenarios: wearing a mermaid tail that was already owned by the group, wearing a monofin, and wearing no equipment.
2. During these (control) time trials, Mermaids will wear an accelerometer on their ankle to assess the acceleration and speed that arises during swimming.
3. Once the new monofin and foothold prototype has been assembled, the time trials will be repeated to compare performance with the control trials.
4. The accelerometer data will be captured in the same manner with the second time trials to compare performance with the control time trials and the tow tank data (see #6).
5. The team will elicit feedback regarding how the new prototype performed in terms of maneuverability and comfort.
6. The monofin and prototype will be tested in a tow tank at various speeds while recording the drag force on the monofin. This will allow the group to determine whether or not the foothold system can withstand the drag force created by the swimming.
7. Material testing will be performed on monofin plastic to determine material properties. “
“For the purposes of determining the difference in swimming speeds for different methods of propulsion, swimming time trials were performed at the Aquatron. Mermaids were asked to perform time trials in the following equipment:
1. With current Mermaid tails
2. With a monofin
3. With no swimming aids
All swimming tests were performed in the same manner to ensure consistency. The following tests were performed with each of the aforementioned equipment types:
1. Steady swim: Time for Mermaids to swim at their own pace for one length of the Aquatron. This was more for acceleration data than time trials.
2. Fast swim: Time for Mermaids to swim as fast as they were able to for one length of the Aquatron.
3. Roll: Time for Mermaids to perform one horizontal roll while swimming forwards.
4. Flip: Time for Mermaids to perform one flip backwards or forwards underwater.
5. Turn (no wall): Time for Mermaids to swim from the center of the Aquatron to the wall and back to the center without pushing off the wall.
6. Turn (with wall): Time for Mermaids to swim from the center of the Aquatron to the wall and back to the center after pushing off the wall. “
Here were our timed trials.
Mimi tested my old rapidash in a competitor monofin
Emma tested our blue tail in a competitor monofin
I tested my current orange tail with a foil
Nessie tested my franken tail with a wave
Vitoria tested she creature with a foil
You can see from the data that certain tails are a lot slower compared to the person swimming with just a regular monofin. But still much faster than just bare legs. Interesting to note that Nessie was only 1 second slower than I am with her bare legs, and me in my tail. I’m telling you my tail got drag.
36512
36513
(not all the data is here for the other swimmers so you’ll only be able to compare a few)
And here is the accelerometer data we collected as well:
36514
^like I said not everything is included these are just a few examples pulled. There's pages and pages, these are averages, and not every mer at this moment.
I’m not gonna publicly share the prototype data yet it’s better in some areas, not as great in others, but is still a prototype and being worked on.
You’ll see I referenced a tow-tank frequently. Here’s a fun photo by the engineers of the monofin in a tow tank!
36515
They tested the drag as speed was increased (m/s) and the drag increased as speed increased. There’s a whole bunch of charts and graphs that go with that but it’s combined with prototype data so I won’t be sharing it at this time.
A few interesting points discovered during testing:
-“It is important to note that all of the maximum velocities were found to occur when the Mermaids were performing either a turn (with or without the wall) or a roll. This is partially because the acceleration at these times was occurring in multiple planes and the magnitude of the acceleration peaked at these times. It is also because these maneuvers required the longest dolphin kick strokes. These were noted as times of high drag force, which makes for uncomfortable feet while swimming.”
-“As the tow tank trolley increased in speed, it was found that the monofin deflected a significant amount. This deflection increased as the speed of the trolley increased, and the drag on the monofin leveled out to 70 N at 2.0 m/s.”
-“The small modulus of elasticity of the plastic in testing confirmed our results in the tow tank where the monofin had a significant deflection. The amount of deflection could not be determined throughout the tow tank testing. However, it was noted that the vertical ridges formed in the monofin do not keep the fin flat in the water when traveling at high velocities”
I know that's a wee bit all over the place but it should make more sense when you see my next round of videos (I have just had NO time to edit them all together)

Yay science! You're focusing on the finis foil correct? Have you considered reaching out to finis for sponsorship?
This is brilliant, I love the science behind this. Do you think we will get the point where we can more safely swim in tidal waters with foil fins? Fins crossed.
Thank you for sharing Raina, can't wait to hear more! Hope the videos are posted soon :D

no we tested multiple finis fins. Foil, wave, rapid, and competitor. But our prototype we tested specifically on the rapid because it was a good middle ground.
we reached out to finis multiple times and heard nothing.

I personally wouldnt use a foil for a lot of ocean swimming. I use mine for shallow water shoot sand stuff but honestly, you need something with strong push for the ocean. You get caught in a current and you'd be gone in a foil, especially if in a tail with loads of flowy fluke.

I had a dream last week...
I was swimming in my new Finis monofin. I had made a tail to cover it and was sitting poolside, admiring the flowing fabric and the classic fish shape fin...
Fins crossed, from what you tested with Merbellas tails, I hope its not a monofin made specifically for that company. That its available to everyone, mer or not.

I'm wondering if you guys would be prepared to consider testing monofins that have an additional angle on them where the foot pocket meets the monofin? Angled monofins are just starting to become popular with freedivers since the added angle allows you to get the monofin more close to parallel when you point your feet which then allows greater streamlining with gliding movements. It might not yield better fast line speed but could help to improve manouverabilty.
Otherwise make sure the scientists are taking into account the fact that 0 angle monofins like the Finis ones you are testing do not actually get to parallel when streamlining through water since they are strapped to our feet, and most people's feet cannot achieve enough arch to create that parallel line with the monofin.

I have all the footage for 2 other videos and just havent had time to edit/ post it. The first study is published but I am not sure how to put access to it online because it's behind a university paywall. But we are expecting it to continue again with version 3 of the fin this winter. Just not sure of exact dates. (there's another study in the aquatron that gets priority right now on tidal power) When the next round of testing and versioning is done there will be a follow up publication :)

Im not sure if it's something that will be commercially available at this point or not ($$$). Still testing, we own the IP but would likely work something out for Merbellas tails, and who knows maybe Finis would actually be interested after the fact lol (we tried to get them before. Finfun was super interested but wanted all the IP)
