View Full Version : The YMCA is ridiculous

I don't know if they're still like this, but I heard something about the Y no longer allowing mermaids to swim at their pool because of a "liability". That is ridiculous. How would they know you are trying to sell tails through them? Why would they assume that about everybody who has a tail that's a YMCA member? All the mermaids here ( including me) would bring a tail to swim in just for FUN. I also read about how they got two mermaids and they let one swim in her Fin Folk Productions tail but wouldn't let the other swim because her tail was homemade.. Now, if they're banning tails/monofins because of a safety issue, that's perfectly reasonable, but anything else is just stupid.

By "liability" they mean they are worried that someone will get hurt while a tail is in use and sue the Y for allowing tails. It does not matter if its safe to use the tail, or even safer to be using a tail. If an accident does occur while a tail is in use, the Y can be held liable for damages.

Just as a heads up Sea Unicorn, you don't need to make a new thread for everything you post. There are plenty of threads already going about the YMCA tail bans. Please post in one of them instead.

Silly question : the name of the pools (YMCA) is purposely taken from the Village People? :thinks: :jester:

This can happen in any pool, even community pools so why aren't they banned everywhere?

I hope you are joking. But just in case:
The Young Men's Christian Association has been around far longer than the Village People.
This can happen in any pool, even community pools so why aren't they banned everywhere?
Because some people are paranoid, and some are rational. The paranoid ones cut out any perceived risk they possibly can. The rational ones realize the risk is so small that it can be ignored.

The Y was actually one of the first pools years ago to not allow mermaids. I emailed the head of Y canada and asked why (thinking if it was safety I could challenge it) and I was told that it was a conflict of interest for them to allow outside solicitors to work on their premise. For me that meant I couldn't do any birthday parties or lessons there. That's all I know, it's just been an issue with them for YEARS.

I was concerned about that. but my local why is pretty cool the manager for the pool knew about mono fins and allows them in the pool. I was talking to her about it and all and she seemed to know alot about it so maybe a fellow mer.

Depends on each pool or network. Most every pool here in NC has been very cool about tails.
Virginia Beach is very anti tail. A lot of it can be how busy a pool is. If its very busy, banning tails is a simple out for them.

It's always best to ask your pool staff before each swim. The closest Y to me allows me to swim in my tail as long as it's not a busy day, and my City pools generally have a rule against monofins BUT if it's covered with something they generally let you swim.
Now a college about an hour from me, where the local pod has swum before has decided like in the past month or two to no longer allow tails, monofins yes but tails no

Yeah I heard this is because Virginia Beach has very strong rip tides that come in, and if anybody in a tail gets caught it's very possible they could drown.

YMCA here in Australia has now banned tail swimming in all of their pools nationwide!! Many other pools here have also followed suit, its very dissappointing.

Ridiculous as well. I googled for accidents involving tails and couldn't even find ONE incident...

I coach a swim team at my YMCA and I have three girls who just got finfun tails for Christmas because a lot of guards have asking about the whole "allowing tails in the pool" I am writing up a proposal for me or someone who knows mermaiding to teach a class on the safety and how to swim in a fabric tail.
