Getting the ball rolling... Professional mermaiding questions!

Hello!

I've decided to seriously look into the possibility of starting my own mermaiding business here in Boston, MA. But first I wanted to crowd-source some answers:


Are there any preexisting, well-established mermaids here in Boston who would feel they were getting their fins stepped on? I don't want to anger anyone, and maybe I could work for them, as opposed to starting my own gig.
What are the normal rates that pros charge? $15/hr?
What kinds of research should I have prepared?


I know a few of these are very wide open questions. I plan on doing research, (general googling, checking out Raina's blog and such,) but I thought I should utilize this font of information!

If you don't know any other mers in the area to ask, one thing I did to come up with a rate was look at the rates other performers charge on my local Craigslist; clowns, magicians, etc. Good way to get a rough idea. Good luck!

Raina what would you say to someone who's just starting out? In my area I will be the first mermaid for hire. I was planning on charging $40/hour based on my overhead costs, cost of tail and maintenance, hours, and the salary I want to make.

More than that honestly. I live in a poor area and we charge 175 for a one hour party with one Mermaid. Additional money for second Mermaid.

Pearl Bae! Have you looked into working for Save the Bay? I was a mermaid for them last summer before I moved to the west coast... but I volunteered with them for a few months :) they are super wonderful. It's in Newport RI but everyone is so amazing!! Good luck!
