View Full Version : How to advertise plus which pool for a gig?

Hello :)
I have everything I need to start doing gigs from tail to training. I have got fb and Twitter.
Now my question: how do you advertise efficiently to get gigs? I plan to charge 80-100 per hour, but have a fabric tail (that's why I want to save the money from gigs for a silicone one). Also, should the client choose where it is, as long as it is for hire and not in a public session, or should I offer the pools that work (some pools charge a lot for renting, plus they offer birthday party hiring too which include other programmes, too, wich go over 100). How do I combine pool renting, client choice of place and type of renting?
Thank you for your help!

I am just starting my pro mermaid journey, but I have a lot of experience in performing, private party planning, public event planning, booking and venues. First I think you need to talk to a manager at the pools you can potentially work with. You have a couple options depending on how they run their business:
A) if they have their own party planning services, you can offer your services as an add on to their party options. So basically you work for them.
Pros: they will be bringing you work with parties and clients you wouldn't normally reach, as well as advertising through their networks. This simplifies what you are responsible for, you just show up to the gig and perform.
Con: you won't be able to charge top dollar if they are the ones booking the party and providing all the benefits above.
*in this set up you can also bring the pool your own parties and clients, and when the client pays the party service package, you might be able to work out a small "finders fee" for bringing them clients, in addition to your mermaid performance fee.
B) if they do not have their own party services, prefer to keep events separate, or don't mind you running your business at their location, they will simply charge a fee to rent the pool. Then you can take event planning into your own hands. You can either simply refer the client to rent the pool, or you can take on a range of mermaid themed party planning services. These could include booking the pool, organizing cake and catering, supplying or making mermaid decorations and goodie bags, designing invitations, and booking additional entertainment.
Pros: you can make a LOT more money since you are offering more services and are in direct control of the client's budget. You can also have a lot of fun throwing dream mermaid parties with all the fun details and themes.
Cons: This can be a LOT of responsibility. Event planning is the 5th top stressful job in America. If you plan on performing and planning you may need to hire an assistant. Of course you don't have to offer wedding sized productions, you can start by simply booking the pool for the client and offering a few simple mermaid themed add ons, and charging them a fee that includes all these.
I'd say start with A until you have enough experience (and clients) to start venturing out with B. Again, I'm new to pro mermaiding but these are the basic options most event venues work with and it varies venue to venue. Either hire them to do it all, or just rent the space and you (or the client) handle the details.
