Dear Mermen. I am getting ready to work on the merman section of my book and I would like input from all of you, and if you're willing to quote some of you. Please take a look at these questions and answer in the comments. You could end up in my book If you're willing, you can also send me a photo to go along with your blurb that you have the rights to share (because it would be published) so I can give a little profile on you and a shoutout. I can't guarantee I'll use everyone's stuff, but let's give it a shot. You can PM my fan page

1. Please link the merman page you'd like credited and or your website.

2. Your merman name, your human name, how long you've been a merman for, and if you're comfortable you're age. If you are recreational or professional. Or in between.

3. In one paragraph, tell me what attracted you to mermaids. You can also tell me specifics like how old you were when you got interested in them.

4. In one paragraph, tell me about either your main tail or your favourite tail and what influenced your design.

5. Have you had a bad experience specifically because you're a man in this community, and if so can you share it?

6. Have you had a special or good experience specifically because you are a man in this community (or within your mer-work), and if so can you share it?

7. What do you think is a specific challenge when it comes to being a merman?

8. What do you think is a specific perk about being a merman?

9. What advice would you have for young boys interested in mers?

10. What is your favourite part of being a merman?

11. Anything else you'd like to include that you feel is important

Thank you

Your suggestion to try to help another be successful in their venture was very thoughtful. :)

2. Your merman name, your human name, how long you've been a merman for, and if you're comfortable you're age. If you are recreational or professional. Or in between.
I am Merman Chatfish, AKA Travis Edrington, I am 27, been really a merman for half a year, though tried making a tail a few years ago but failed with the stitching. I am mainly recreational now but would like to become professional. I would most likely need to be attached to a group, I know how to entertain kids, but not running a business.

3. In one paragraph, tell me what attracted you to mermaids. You can also tell me specifics like how old you were when you got interested in them.
I don't remember exactly how old I was when I first got into mermaids but I think I was in middle school. I remember having a dream where I was in an aquarium at a zoo with other people pretending to be menfolk. There was a front area people could see us and then a hidden area for us to relax. There was someone on a microphone telling us how to act and swim. It was a job for us to pretend we were real. When I woke up I was intrigued and started looking up mermaids online. I found the photomorph photos interesting but really was interested in the real ones with people wearing tails. I always tried to figure out where the heels were and how you could hide them better.

4. In one paragraph, tell me about either your main tail or your favourite tail and what influenced your design.
My current tail is a blue fabric tail from Finfun. Its my first functional tail, and I bought because is cheep and has good reviews. I can’t wait for my first real tail when I can afford it.

5. Have you had a bad experience specifically because you're a man in this community, and if so can you share it?
I was worried about how friends and family might react but so far it has been quite positive. Only trouble I have had so far was last week I taking some video of me swimming when some kids came over to hang out. I tried to keep getting some B roll video and I let the kids play with the camera a little. When I got out my manager had me come to the office to delete the videos they were in. I think having a man playing in the pool and recording video is a bit creeper than if it was a woman. Being an adult male with autism seems to make it easier to trigger people creepy radar.

6. Have you had a special or good experience specifically because you are a man in this community (or within your mer-work), and if so can you share it?
Well I met my girlfriend, Mermaid Alleset, AKA Charlotte at Mermania in January. I would never have met her if it wasn't for mermaiding.

7. What do you think is a specific challenge when it comes to being a merman?
I think its the same as any man in a child entertainment or teaching job. I always worry something will happen and I won't be able to swim or teach lessons or anything.

8. What do you think is a specific perk about being a merman?

9. What advice would you have for young boys interested in mers?
Don't hide it, you will be surprised at how much support you can get.

10. What is your favorite part of being a merman?
Swimming and entertaining kids.

11. Anything else you'd like to include that you feel is important
I am ok referring to even what I do as mermaiding. The way I think about it is man and woman are gender specific, which are the species humans, merman and mermaid are gender specific for the species mermaids.

1. Please link the merman page you'd like credited and or your website.
I'm eagerly awaiting my first tail from Merrowfins, whose page is https://www.facebook.com/MerrowFins/?fref=ts

2. Your merman name, your human name, how long you've been a merman for, and if you're comfortable you're age. If you are recreational or professional. Or in between.
I'm still trying to conceive my merman name, but I want it to be a series of whistles, like a dolphin's, maybe to the tune of a favorite theme song. My human name is much easier. It's Geoff. This will be my first time being a merman as I ordered the custom tail last October--- yep, signed the papers on Halloween---and eagerly wait. I'm comfortable about doing anything like this at my age. You're never going to get younger. I'd only be recreational at this point, but have pondered being a professional and coming up with a "circus freak" type gimmick, like "Tom the Mermaid" or something.

3. In one paragraph, tell me what attracted you to mermaids. You can also tell me specifics like how old you were when you got interested in them.
Being a creative writer, I'm fascinated by how reality can be twisted. It's the "freak" aspect. Not only with merfolk, but other half-human half-creatures. There's a website which is now defunct that showed all sorts of photoshopped half-creatures. I'm drawn to the supernatural, so my fascination began at a young age. It would've been around '84 or '85. Of course, I loved swimming even before my interest in mermaids. While I don't remember Splash when it came out --- I would've been eight --- I do remember the cartoon episode of "It's Punky Brewster" where she gets turned into one and envying that. I've both fantasized about relationships with mermaids and wanting to be a merman.

4. In one paragraph, tell me about either your main tail or your favourite tail and what influenced your design.
In myt early teens, I try different ways of taking old clothes and making ad hoc tails. Then last year, I decided to order a professionally made one. Although I really ached to have a shark-like design, with a vertical tail, the owner of Merrowfins (Matt) and I decided it'd be easier to go for a horizontal one. I've perused some interesting posts on Mernetwork about people's success with constructing vertical tails. It's still in an infancy, but I'm going to find a way. So, I went with the vertical tail, but designed realistically after a dolphin, the only logical facsimile. Even have it with genitalia, a dorsal fin and painted in my skin tone so you can't tell where the tail begins. For my next tail, I'd like to have the same, but with a strong, flexible rod between my feet and the monofin so as to give that nice narrow tip to the fluke.

5. Have you had a bad experience specifically because you're a man in this community, and if so can you share it?
I've kept mermaiding to myself... too concerned or too wise to share it for fear people getting the wrong idea about me.

6. Have you had a special or good experience specifically because you are a man in this community (or within your mer-work), and if so can you share it?
Not yet, but looking forward to it. Those conventions where you all swim together look fun.

7. What do you think is a specific challenge when it comes to being a merman?
No specific challenge, except that I'd like the perception of merfolking only being for girls to be overturned.

8. What do you think is a specific perk about being a merman?
All the creativity behind it. It's like Halloween. Sort of like a contest to see how close you can get to looking like a genuine creature of the sea. Haven't swum in a tail yet, but I can imagine it would be extraordinary. I'd like to experience that feeling of having your legs bound so well, you forget the tail isn't a real extension of your body.

9. What advice would you have for young boys interested in mers?
Keep up your interest and develop your creativity.

10. What is your favourite part of being a merman?
See Question# 8

11. Anything else you'd like to include that you feel is important
Just yesterday, I discovered someone I know was interested in it, too. Her social media photo popped right up and I PM'd her about how surprised she shared the interest. This was the first time I admitted to someone else about being a merfolk enthusiast. She liked the message. Although being exposed to people you've never known expressing their interest, it's still a pleasant surprise when you come across somebody you have known.

None at this time.

2. Your merman name, your human name, how long you've been a merman for, and if you're comfortable you're age. If you are recreational or professional. Or in between.
My real name is Garrett but I go by Merman Rett (the last half of my regular name). I am recreational mostly, but hope to eventually expand into the professional world once I get a full silicone tail.

3. In one paragraph, tell me what attracted you to mermaids. You can also tell me specifics like how old you were when you got interested in them.
I have always been attracted to the idea of the mermaid. Something about the mystery of the beautiful deep blue ocean was captivating and alluring. Even when my friends were scared to go near the ocean (because of sharks and jellyfish and such) I was right there already in the waves.

4. In one paragraph, tell me about either your main tail or your favourite tail and what influenced your design.
My current tail is a generic blue, but I have many tail designs for future tails that go all over the color spectrum. From blue to green to purple to silver to coral to rainbow. I think your tail should be a reflection of your personality (or mersonality if they differ) and who you are. I once saw someone trying to convince a merman to get a more 'masculine' color instead of the more 'feminine' color he wanted, and I couldn't help but think that this is one of the things wrong with how people view mermen. The tail is arguably the most important aspect of the mer, and so I believe it is supremely important to get the one that is an extension of who you are as a person, not the one you force yourself into just so you don't break the mould society sets.

5. Have you had a bad experience specifically because you're a man in this community, and if so can you share it?
Nothing specific, but I find that many adult and teen guys will give you dirty looks when they see you in a tail. They instantly judge you for expressing who you are, and immediately think of themselves as superior. It can be very devastating to your confidence as a mer.

6. Have you had a special or good experience specifically because you are a man in this community (or within your mer-work), and if so can you share it?
Again, nothing specific, but I find that many women (especially mermaids) are super supportive of having us in the community. It is a real confidence booster knowing that we are loved and supported for doing what we do.

7. What do you think is a specific challenge when it comes to being a merman?
Breaking the gender stereotype that mers have to be mermaids (and, thus, women).

8. What do you think is a specific perk about being a merman?
You definitely get noticed a lot more. You could have a less-than-stellar performance as a mer and tail that is not as realistic as another mermaids, but many will remember the guy in the tail more than the girl. I think this is mostly just because it is startling to see a guy shattering the preconceived notion of the mer as a female, and to many this sticks in their memory more.

9. What advice would you have for young boys interested in mers?
Go for it! Don't let anyone tell you not to do it, and don't you dare lose your passion for it just because you are not supported. I struggled with this a lot when I was first interested in mermanning because my family (especially my father) was very unsupportive of me pursuing this as a hobby, passion, and lifestyle. Eventually I realized that I just had to stop caring what they thought about it and do what made me happy.

10. What is your favourite part of being a merman?
Everything. The swimming, the tails, the amazing feeling of being underwater with the fish, the looks of wonder kids give you. I love it all.

11. Anything else you'd like to include that you feel is important
Being a merman is an expression of who I am, and I don't think public opinion should affect that.

UPDATE: Whoops, sorry Raina! Didn't see that you don't need more responses. :sweat drop:
