What the least chosen choice of tail color(s).

Like you only ever seen one or two, and then no more after that.

I think I've seen a tail in pretty much every colour.

Maybe dont see brown very much but I do see brown blended in.

I don't really see a point in disparaging other people's tail color choices. Some colors may be less common than others, but why label them "less popular"? Why give certain colors unflattering judgmental names? Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and everyone's is different but it's best not to shove them in other people's faces.

less popular just means there arent many of them. I was looking for less popular colors a while ago because i wanted to be different, but ultimately went for classic blue. i dont think this is meant to be pejorative.

On a personal level, I am not one for colors that are in the warm spectrum (reds, oranges, yellows), especially if they are on me. That being said, there are -ALWAYS- exceptions to that, it just depends on how well the tail was made or how well the paint job was. I also do not mind warm colors if they are used as accents on tails (spoiler, my merbella tail may contain trace amounts of yellow as I gave Raven a visual chart of colors I was okay with and only had about 80% of the tail finalized and I told her that yellow in small amounts would be ok, so my tail is as much a surprise to me as it will be anyone else!).

I have seen some BEAUTIFUL tails in all the colors I do not prefer and I have been in awe of them.

I do think that tails that are brown, however, tend to be less favorable by me as a whole. I've seen some that are done with copper on it as well and it looks lovely, but not my cup of tea.

White tails, to me, can be wonderful if done right, but they are often cloth or are too see through... I suppose my biggest thing I hate in tails, especially cloth ones, is when you can see swim-suits through them. (hence why I sometimes wear leggings under my cloth tails, especially when they get older. ;) )

How do you decide the colors of your dream tail without some person going, "It looks like so and so's tail!"???

Good question. I think that while it is good to look at other people's tails for inspiration, you shouldn't look at other tails too much because then you might accidentally use someones exact color scheme or design because it got stuck in your head. Also, you just have to keep on designing until you feel like you have gotten to a really good place that is all unique to you. For example, I have at least 20 different tail design concepts I have gone through and my taste and color palette has already changed a ton since starting my concepts. What has really helped me is making a mood board to get a good visual representation of colors and designs I want on a tail.

The other day I took a photo of a Merbella tail and changed the colors a lot in photoshop to see what kind of interesting results would come of it. What happened is I got some very unique color combos that I would have never thought of, and combos I have never seen before. So playing around with layer styles and color mixing in photoshop is also very helpful to get inspired.

Correct me if I'm missing something... but when has 'less popular' ever immediately meant ugly or due for disregard? Tail colors that aren't common are not as popular as colors that are used often. It's synonymous, and having a tail in a less popular color does not mean that anyone is disregarding your colors. They just aren't common. I'd take it as a compliment, I for one love unique tails.

Anyways, to answer the question I don't see greyscale tails very often. I've seen a couple of shark tails that look fantastic, and Mal's tail is silver.
Earthy tones are common in nature but not in tails. Browns, earthy greens, tans, etc.

I'd love to see more neon/phosphorescent/glow in the dark tails!

I never said they were ugly choices of colors. I meant least popular as in a color that's not thought of often. There is nothing wrong with "safety vest orange" or "taxi cab yellow". I have both those colors on my Scraps Mermaid Tail too! I really don't mind it at all, I call it my, Hi Vis Tail. The tail body part is a very bright inyourface neon pink! When I was sewing on the fluke, I had to close the blinds because the glare was hurting my eyes! It was like staring into the sun!

I don't think I've ever seen a tail I didn't like. For sure some not my style, we all have our own preferences. But I just adore everyone's tail; they're out there swimming in mermaid tails, fuck yes, how rad is that?!!

Some mentioned above I love.
I don't recall her name but there's a mer here with a red tail and red hair and she's pictured swimming in her auto signature; I think it looks effing bad donkey!
And I looooooove white tails! I was seriously considering iridescent white for my tail but I knew it would get grungy fast.

Jaffa, did you start this thread because you were looking to come up with a more unusual or unique idea for a tail for yourself?
I fancy myself as pretty artsy fartsy, but I didn't design my tail. I left it to an artist I knew could come up with something better than I could. Yes yes, I gave her all my favorite colors and a bit on what kind of mermaid I am, and she did the rest! And yes, yes, my color scheme is quite cliche, (Blue, Aqua, Coral) but they ARE my favorite colors.
My closet is filled with clothes those colors, my bedroom, my house, even my office! I feel GOOD when they are on me or around me so cliche be damned, that's what I want!
Jaffa, get what YOU want.
Eff everyone else. :)

...I don't think I got the wrong idea. I was simply pointing out the negative-sounding tone of some of the original post and some of the comments. Word choice matters, people. Please don't try to tell me that "less common" and "less popular" are equivalent terms, because they certainly aren't. "Less popular" has a more negative connotation; i.e. it sounds mildly derogatory. I'm not claiming that this was the INTENT of the original post, I am pointing out that this is how language works. Furthermore, several other comments were made describing certain colors with adjectives that made them sound less than complimentary, which in turn offended someone whose exact tail colors had just been described with negative-sounding language. Do you see what I'm getting at? Please consider your word choices a little more carefully, because while certain terms may seem completely innocuous to you, they may sound very negative to others. Especially in this context; for most of us here, our tails are so enormously representative of our inner selves that seeing their colors being joked about or described negatively can feel like a real slap in the face.

As for the ACTUAL intent of the original post in this thread...Jaffa, I know you didn't mean any harm. I THINK you only meant to start a discussion of some unusual colors that aren't chosen for tails very often and what colors would be interesting to see on tails more often. However, it did honestly sound like more of a "hey, what are some tail colors that are so icky and unpopular almost no one wants them?!" I feel it's important to point out this distinction not to make you feel bad, but just to make you a little more aware of it in the future. If anyone else thinks I'm being too nitpicky, maybe consider the fact that if you weren't one of the people offended by the "unpopular tail colors" chat, you may need to be a little more sensitive to the feelings of those who WERE, rather than denying anyone else's right to feel offended. Waving off someone's concerns over negative language as a silly miscommunication is dismissive and insulting.

And with regard to the subsequent question of "how do you decide the colors of your dream tail without going 'it looks like so and so's tail'" well....just pick your dream colors and call it good. If it's your dream tail, then it should only be based on what YOU want. Design it yourself, be creative, don't copy anyone, look to nature for inspiration, add some unique personal touches, etc. etc. I feel like this is a separate discussion from "unusual tail colors". Colors come in an infinite spectrum, with an infinite number of different shades and an infinite number of possible combinations. Think of just how many fish species exist and the incredible array of colors and patterns they display. I highly doubt it is possible to run out of options.

I think its based on personal preference, While some may not like yellow or orange, I've seen some beautiful colored tails in yellow and orange. I personally don't like super loud colors, but that's me. Im attracted to blues and certain purples hues, probably because I associate them with "calm" colors.

Im not too fond of greens and reds (however one of my mersisters in my pod has a beautiful red/purple tail) I dislike singular gold tails personally, I don't know why, I feel like its too plain for me. but that's me. I love very well blended tails, I am not too fond of really cartoony tails. but Like I said personal preference.

I will say I don't see as many white tails as a lot of the other colors. I personally can see a good reason why, the tail being washed out in photos in the sunlight (like my skin, which photographers constantly moan about it throwing off their white balance, tee hee). Brown as well, although brown is more commonly used to accent other warmer colors. Neon colors tend to be more popular with kids than with adults.

With silicone tails specifically, pastel tails aren't as common. Mostly because people want their tails to really pop in the water. Also because pastels take a LOT of paint layers to become opaque. I'd seen some tail makers to pastel colors without enough layers and they were a bit transparent. Sometimes all those layers can lessen the details of the molds as well, depending the painting process used (like if the silicone was pigmented underneath the tail, or the use of a proper primer for the job, ect). But those I have seen are quite beautiful :)

There aren't a lot, though Meridan has one. She let me try it on once actually. As Iona predicted, the image is a little saturated with all the whiteness, cause I am super pale.

Usually of adults get neon tails the neon color is used as an accent instead of ti coat the entire tail.

Also black tails aren't that used. The only one I've seen is the lady gaga one.

It looks really natural on her. I'm blonde and have warm/ pink undertones in my skin so that color of tail wouldn't work for me, but when it works damn does it work.

I think the term that wouldn't bother anyone is "rare." What colors are rare to see in a tail? I don't think I've seen a pure white tail. My guess is that white might be more see through, so while it's a nice color (I'm all about winter white! And anytime whitel,) it's not a practical one.

I also notice that many mermen tend to lean towards greys, blacks and more earthy tones. Of course many choose bright colors too, but it seems they also choose natural colors more often then mermaids do.

It's also not often that I see a really red tail. Women usually love to wear red (the red dress, red bikini, and red lipstick have very intense feminine symbolism), so it's interesting that red is not common in tails. My theory is that mermaiding brings out the softer more girly feminine side, so pinks and bright flowery colors are often go tos. Though I would love to see a sexy vavoom Jessica Rabbit style tail!

It seems there is consensus that blue is one of the most common colors. I think most of us mermaids always love blue because it is the color of the ocean. It's one of my favorites for sure! But I wouldn't choose it for a tail because I see blue tails have a tendency to disappear into the blue of the water in photos. The contrast of pinks and oranges against the big blue is more dynamic.

You're right, that is a rarity. I've seen a few fabric ones (maybe like 3 I think?). I've seen few latex ones too, but they weren't swimmable - they were full body suits (I guess they were fetish images, that was way back in the Seatails days). But no silicone ones that I've seen for sure.

Infrared and ultraviolet are colors outside of humans' visible spectrum.

0nce my fur friend t01d me t0 make a tai1 that was a c010r 0utside 0f the visib1e spectrum

Using colors outside the visible spectrum won't make the tail invisible. It would be the color of the substrate, so in the case of Dragonskin, it would be a milky whitish.

Also, using numbers in the place of letters is incredibly annoying. Save that shit for Twitter.

It's been my experience that neon colors look best on people with deeper skin tones. Pale people are overpowered by neon/flourescent colors.

All of my tails are black, though they are accented with other colors on the fluke. I've found that black has a tendency to 'erase' details; you can see my scale patterns in most pictures, so it just looks like a flat black surface. Plus side! Dirt doesn't show up all that much on my tail, which is nice. My cats' fur on the other hand....

There are dudes that are always spearfishing by my house, and they always have brownish camo color wetsuits on. A tail made with the wetsuit material like the one you posted would be beautiful! And if you added glitter or sequins to it... oh god... *drools* lol

x2 Recently I discovered that they have camo spearfishing wetsuits. Some of them are really pretty!

Very nice!

My current tail, "Spot", is a red tail fashioned after the colors of a red drum/channel bass, state fish of NC (I'm an NC merman). My next tail, "Freckles", will be a black tail with abalone highlights in the pattern of a bobtail squid.

Tail ideas I haven't seen yet:
denim mermaid tail !
mermaid tail made out of jacket patches /quilting
mermaid tail made out of playing cards
Mermaid tail made out of beach trash
WALL PAPER MERMAID TAIL!
Mermaid tail made out of stolen office supplies! lol

(most of these ideas are in no way realistic)

I kinda ran away with the idea of mermaid tails made with random things... hence wall paper, and stolen office supplies... lol

it would be cool to make it out of jeans, then you can have pockets!!!!
...but it would be really heavy to swim in.

Lol at my original question!!! Look how far we've deviated from it, and the ideas that have come up!

Rare colors for mermaid tails:
Silver: I've only seen one all silver tail. Even as an accent it's pretty rare.
Brown and bronze: I'd love to see brown as the main color instead of an accent.
Yellow: most go for gold instead of yellow, but yellow really pops in the water. Think of the yellow tang!
Muted yellow-green: common on real life fish, not so much in mermaids.

I just laughed out loud when I read "floating torso". That honestly would be awesome.

I have a brown tail. I call it my selkie tail and it's made of stretch velvet. I'll have to find a picture of it.

Other people have already mentioned these colors, but brown and silver TOGETHER would be quite unique. I think then you would end up having more of a freshwater (fish) look.

Update: I have decided on flowers!

Apart from pre-made tails that I have bought, all of my homemade tails have some sort of flowers printed on them. That's what my "tail colors" will be.

It seems like people go for blue tails less often all for the reasoning that it's "too popular" lol. Blue is my favorite color though and definitely the base color for my dream tail.

I think blue blends in too much with the water, though I think it is much more striking on land.

Yeah I've heard that blue and green tails don't photograph so well underwater because they blend with the water.

I wish there were more black tails available! Unfortunately most black tails look one-dimensional underwater but I think black looks so amazing and majestic.

Reminds me of that infamous Yogi Berra quote: "No one goes to that restaurant any more. It's too crowded."

At the same time though, blue is the last color to fade from distance in the water. After about 20 or so feet, red turns to black, and the more distance you add, so do all of the other colors. Then again I'm also bias and just love my blue a lot, lol.

I will say, though I don't like how blue "blends" with the water, there is something...deeper to that. Almost like you become one with the ocean, if you will.

I've always have leaned more towards the darker greens and black tails myself. Currently my only tail is black and dark grey but I have been thinking of trying finfun' s tail creating program.

I live for blue and black in my mermaid look, but I don't own a solid blue tail just yet!

Oddly enough, the colors that most folks avoid as they're "too common" end up being some of the rarer type!

My green tail looks magical in surface shoots and the blue and green is amazing underwater. The black tail hasn't been used for much else than my short videos, but it tends to look a bit flat.
