Okay, so for the past week I have had a nightmare nearly every night that involved my tail. I have no idea why but it's driving me crazy.
The first one, I was at a pool about to go for a swim in my tail and Raina was there already in the water. There were a bunch of other people but I can't remember who, anyway, I went to put it on and it started to disintegrate in my hands. It turned to like jelly and just fell apart and I remember thinking, "I can't still wear it!!! I can't still wear it!!!"
The second one, someone asked me what I did and I told them "I'm a mermaid" and they didn't believe me so I took out my phone to show them a picture only I couldn't find any pictures and I got more and more panicked the longer I looked and the person started to laugh at me and tell me over and over "your not a mermaid!"
The third one was last night. My husband and I went to one of the springs that was two hours away, but when we got there I realized I didn't have my tail and I was crushed. I told my husband I was driving back to get it and he told me "you can't drive 4 hours to get your tail" and I was so depressed.
What the heck is wrong with me! Argh!

I dreamt I was in the middle of killing someone I liked and I was actually a mermaid :0

I've had a few mermaid dream... nightmare things. I don't say nightmare outright because I was never scared but they usually weren't happy.
Most of them involve me meeting some famous mermaid person (like Raina and Raven separately) and them being too cool to really hang out with me haha.

Wow. The things that we dream of. I have had mer dreams before, but the worst part about them is waking up. When you are swimming in the ocean, breathing it in the sea, and testing out the amazing abilities of your real tail, and something snaps you back to reality, DOG GONE IT!

I've had multiple dreams about royally messing up gigs. Before I ever thought it would be possible to go to Canada to see Raina (love you guys <3) I had dreams about finally getting to go, and we were supposed to be doing a gig. I kept on forgetting stuff and having to go back to her place to get said stuff. I wasted all my time with her forgetting stuff and messed up her gig, and her clients were super angry at me and she was too! X_x But I finally did get there, and then my tail started falling apart in the water! 0_o Like the entire fluke came off of the body and I almost drown!
I've had a similar dream with Raina and Raven.. we were meant to be swimming and doing a photoshoot and I kept forgetting stuff and having to back for said stuff, and missed our entire swim.
When I was waiting to get my Merbellas tail I also had nightmares about it not fitting, it falling apart on my first swim, ect.
Our minds can be so cruel!

Well, this case seems intriguing, so i'll try to help you narrow down the possibilities of these nightmares. I know alot about dreams, so i'll try my best to help you.
First off, all faces seen in dreams are of people you once met, and i don't mean the ones you see on the street, i mean proper meet and greet people. The man from the second one must've been a friend or someone you know.
Secondly, have any of those dreams seemed "REAL"? And i mean the type of lucid dreaming. It happens alot with real topics. If you do mermaiding alot, expect mermaidish lucid dreams.
Third of all, nightmares are formed in a different part of the brain than regular dreams. If all those dreams involved mermaid related topics, then it means that something mer-related bothers your brain. This, in any mean, does not mean you should stop, but maybe there's something that generates stress to the brain about mermaids.
I hope this helps, but don't consider it a full report. I just made quick notes about what could be the origin of the nightmares. Have a nice day, and may the nightmares dissapear.

But I haven't met Raina or Raven

My dreams ALWAYS seem real  It's part of having narcolepsy, dreams are super vivid :P Which is great when I have a dream about binge eating sugar cookies or something, cause I can taste them and everything! But really not great at all when I say, get shot in the leg O_o I have to wear 2 mouth guards (one on top, one on bottom) becuase the vivid dreams can be really stressful and cause me to grind and clench my teeth.
I dream pretty much all night every night becuase of my narcolepsy- I spend much more of my time in REM sleep ("active" sleep, when you dream) and not much at all in restful sleep (NREM, or Non-REM) compared to normal people. Which NREM is a very very important kind of sleep, it's when your body repairs itself, regulates hormones, physically "cleans" your brain (super duper important), strengthens your immune system, and all kinds of other fascinating stuff. Which is why narcolepsy leads to a whole lot of other long term problems that just being tired all the time. But, I digress! I could go on and on about this kind of stuff :P
I know most of my dreams are just my brain hanging on or maybe trying to work through my anxieties. For most people it's the same kind of deal.
Like I have dreams all the time about forgetting stuff physically and mentally. Because mentally, I always have a lot on my mind and brain fog can cause me to forget things; physically, I carry a lot of physical stuff with me that I need or to be prepared for things I might need.
I constantly have dreams about carrying a ton of stuff and dropping things and trying to scramble to pick them back up. A reoccuring dream I have is trying to get off of a bus (like a public or school bus) but I keep dropping one thing after another and can't get off because of it.
I don't think you have needed to met someone, or even paid attention to them, to dream about them. I have a lot of random people in my dreams. People that I can't recall ever having met or known. I always wonder where those faces come from! Maybe they're just random people off the street or from TVs or something. Becuase I don't think my mind can just make up that many people or that many faces at random- there must be a reference in my brain somewhere.
Who knows, the brain, and especially sleep, is still quite the mystery! Even for all the scientific research that has been done! Even with all we know, we are still finding out more and more about how sleep really works. We still can't imitate real sleep though. Sleeping pills don't do it, putting people under (like for surgery or a medically induced coma) doesn't do it. Just can't imitate the real thing. At least not yet!

Lately, I swim so high in the sky, that when the feeling of euphoria stopped and I started falling. In the water is a big sea monster with round mouth full of teeth, when I hit the water is when I wake up.
Or I do jumps out of the water like dolphins, but when I start falling, I just feel terrible. Other times, I'm swimming along in deep water and something lurking in the dark water, I don't dare to go, my heart is beating so fast, and I wake up feeling scared, like something is in the room with me.

I once had a dream that I all of a sudden had a real tail. I was across the street from a beach and I had to get to the water so I walked there on my fins. People offered to help but I kept insisting that I could do it myself even though it was uncomfortable and inefficient.
Writing it out, I just realized that this is something I do in real life. I insist on doing things myself even when people offer help.

This isn't a nightmare, but I once dreamt that there was a mermaid hiding under our car because she was scared. I got on the ground and kept telling her to not be scared and that I would put her in the tub while we arranged to take her back to the ocean. Then I woke up. I hope dream me got her to the ocean

The human brain sure is a mystery. That's why is so special. Unique. It makes people different. Imagine all people being the same, same thoughts, same lives, same dreams. It would suck. Keep dreaming, and i hope i was of help. :D

You can be sure it's no different for all animals, so nothing "special".
Some animals dream much more than humans and have very vivid dreams.
Although it could be that simpler minds (dogs, human males, etc) have less complex dreams and thoughts than others.

Had a dream last night that I was getting ready to do a photoshoot on a tropical beach and the client wanted me to be a mermaid on a horse so I had somehow gotten my horse to the beach (he was a white Arabian I had in high school, he was old and died a few years ago tho), but then I realized I had left my fabric tail at "home" which was somehow 3 hours away. We were losing light for the shoot and I tried to use my phone to text my brother or sister to see if they could bring it for me but it was like my brain was mush and I could not seem to type the words or get my phone to cooperate.
Not really a nightmare but a very anxious dream!

Lately, my mer nightmares have involved losing my monofin/tail, having them stolen, someone borrowing them and then claiming its theirs then they won't give it back. And all the time, me freaking out and getting so angry and upset.

Whenever i have dreams about my *costume* tail (versus my actual hippocampus drrams), the bad ones tend to always be like this:
I am going swimming, usually travelling somewhere. When I get to the water I realize I forgot to pack my tail and I start panicking that I have to swim without it.
Or I have a chance to go swimming, but I have no opportunity to grab my tail from home.
Not really nightmares. Just visions of horrible moment of inconvinience. I can swim without a tail, but what fun is that?

@Trade Winds:
have you considered making a full body costume tail, aka a top covering your upper body and head in the shape of a horse?
Just curious. I've seen many mers with ideas for selkie, dragon and other creatures' tails, but all of them just made a lower body tail.

Ooohhh, you betcha. I have thought about getting the horse mask you see in memes, and the matching hooves (linked below). I don't think I could make a full costume to swim in. But, as a furry, I would like to venture into getting some sort of fursuit version of my hippocampus self. But there is no way the head would be swimmable. If anything, I would get just some fake donkey (I am actually a mer-ass lol) ears, and Darkfin swim gloves to mimic hooves

That's cool!
I made some swimmable full costumes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoPDBi6dRFs), but the head was easier to make than a horse's.
On topic;
lately I've had some weird and frightening dreams about being stuck underwater, usually pretty deep in a murky lake.
It's like the nightmares where you want to move but can't, only underwater and breath getting short.
So I desperately try to free myself from whatever is holding me down (?), but I can't move, and I'm heavy like a rock flopping on the bottom.
Really unpleasant :/
And strange, since in reality, I float so easily.

I once dreamt that I was a mermaid, a real one, and my tail was this beautiful sparkling golden orange. Perfection, but I can't imitate that feeling with my drawings.
Anyway, I had come out of the ocean somehow and was trying to get away from something by dragging myself (fins and all) across the boardwalk. My tail was so heavy...then, when I woke up, my back hurt like I had actually been dragging myself along like that. It stopped after a few minutes, but that was the most amazing experience ever.

I had a dream where I was living in a castle and everyone was wearing fancy dated dresses and stuff and I was entertaining and then I told a guy I was interested in to meet me in the solarium, which you could go outside to get to. I did that and got rained on so was trapped outside in the dark on the grass trapped for anyone to find.
