I haven't seen another thread like this yet while I was looking, so here it goes!
Tails in hot tubs! Does anyone know how different materials are effected by high temperatures? I just got a new latex tail and I'm curious to know which of my tails are safe in hot tubs or hot springs, we have a lot of those in Utah! :) http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160224/9921884ba9938dd1b8a5a5ac66019d80.jpg

Latex tails are 100% no good in hot tubs.

Also congratulations on your new tail! :) Glad to see that it has found a new home!

What about other materials like silicone or Lycra with paint or foam fins?

Extreme temperatures shorten the lifespan of latex. (as does sunlight) Though I've taken my latex tail in a hot tub a time or two, I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it. Latex softens in heat.
I've found my fabric tail (spandex, sequins, and painted neoprene) does fine in hot tubs. I tend to bring it specifically for use in hotel pools/hottubs where I don't feel like making the effort of putting on my latex tail. I'm fairly certain anything out of a swimsuit material would be fine, since swimsuits weather hot tubs all the time. Never used a hot spring though, so someone with more experience is welcome to correct me.

Platinum-cure silicone can technically be boiled. Subjecting it to very high heat, hotter than any hot tub, it can potentially darken it, though.

Well there's probably a bigger problem if you're being boiled. Haha ok thank you everyone for your clarification

Medical grade silicone can be boiled. Hot tubs are fine. Other materials vary. I personally asked smoothon. I've had my silicone tails in hot tubs for years no problems

I know Raina has worn her merbella ina hot tub at least once...
Silicone is safe I believe, I think the only problem is typically if there is any sort of glue, that the hot water will weaken it.
Maybe we can do some sort of rain dance (a Raina dance?!) and maybe she can lend some advice.

Lol, it took me a while to type because my bird was trying to attack my cat and I had to put him in a time out.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. People make and buy silicone mermaid tails TO SWIM IN.

We understand what you said. However, we have several people (including tailmakers, well known and respected professional mermaids) sayng that your incorrect and giving statements based on their research and personal experience.

This is mernetwork. It was believed that hot water was bad for tails until we actually asked the people who make them, and the people who make the silicone. I should know, I wrote the book on it ;) Mernetwork is now telling you that tails made from dragon skin can be in hot water!

Well, if anyone ends up in boiling water at least you know your tail will be fine! [emoji23]
... and yes, medical grade silicone can definitely be heated without any adverse effects. As can food safe silicone - just think of all the silicone cooking utensils, egg poach pods, etc.
As has already been mentioned, you just need to be careful if you've used any glue that might react to heat.

I remember we had a sexy fish (merman Nando) in the hot tub at the hotel back when MerMania happened and it went fine for him. Nothing happened to his tail. Raina even bite his fins for fun lol. We have pictures somewhere in the Facebook group.
