I was doing some practice swims in Hawaii before one of my photoshoots, and there were some little kids snorkeling nearby. I dove down behind some coral, and I heard yelling from above, when I swam back over to my sister, she explained that the older of the two had yelled, "It's a BIG FISH!" and the little one had yelled back, "STUPID! It's a MERMAID!"
I was pleased. :)

Yeah while I was swimming with just my monofin I got nicknamed "Fishy" by some kids. Cute.

hmm funny things. I almost drowned once in my tail because a kid jumped into the pool and onto my back and it knocked the wind out of me. When I finally got up all sputtery wanted to know why I couldnt swim better or breathe underwater.
During my most recent video interview a boy was so obsessed with convincing the other kids I wasnt real he threw a sand ball in my face DURING the interview.
I once had a "wardrobe" malfunction lol
At another event a little boy came up and asked me why my boobs were hanging out. I instantly looked down and replied "they arent" and he ran away laughing.

I swim in my monofin in my family's backyard pool, which is nice and private but isn't very big. I've bumped my head about a million times. It's funny because I'll get all excited when I get on a roll with the dolphin kick, and I'll be thinking "I'm doing it! I'm getting the hang of this!" and then CONK! After that I end up saying "oww" and then laughing under water and sometimes get it up my nose.

Ouch, that sounds awful! Our pool is fiberglass, so it's very smooth on the bottom and could not scratch you, thank God. I hate those blisters you sometimes get on the bottom of your feet from rough pool bottoms.

I've had kids come up and ask if I was a mermaid, I go under the water and flick up the end of my tail to which I can hear them squeeling with delight

At the pool I was swimming at the other day the lifeguards (who are all really kind) made an announcement that they were going off duty by calling out "Attention all boys, girls and mermaids!" IMMD ^_^

i went to the theme park Aquatica a long while back, and I swam in the wave pool where I had the lifeguards and kids raving about me. But the real funny part was getting into the wave pool while wearing the tail - my best friend and my boyfriend each took half of my body and tried to carry me into the wave pool! We were laughing too hard to get me further than 2 feet, lol.
Later, I was told to take off the tail when I went into the lazy river.
Another time I went to Lithia Springs with the same best friend, I made her a spandex tail for her b-day and we went to test it out. I think after every hour or two, they clear out the spring for crowd control for 10 minutes, they make the announcement for everyone to evacuate for 10 minutes. And, much like in FlowerBite's post, they announced for the mermaids to get out lol. We also had kids following us and trying to do swimming competitions lol.

I was mermaiding in Lighthouse Park (North Vancouver) a few weekends ago and there was a little girl who started screaming (I mean actually screaming) with excitement! It was so cute! Her parents asked if she could have her picture taken with me. She was so happy! :)

I was at the beach with my tail and at that time, I still had braces on. When a boy and his little sister came up to me and asked if I was a mermaid, of course I said yes. To that the little boy replied: 'No you're not! Mermaids don't have braces!' I laughed at him and said 'Well some of us need them so we come on land to get them, silly!' Then I swam away and he stood there in awe XD

I just got back from vacation with my family in Gatlinburg, TN. I swam every evening in my tail in the pool at our cabins. I had a family come and hang out when I was swimming almost every night, they had 2 little twin girls who didnt want to do anything else on vacation but 'go to the pool and see the mermaid.' It was cute, the mother got them in a picture with me and thir father and one of the little girls goes 'I want a mermaid for my birthday!"

Only a few. I've only been doing this since the beginning of summer.
Usually it's little girls pointing and saying "mermaid!" Very cute and makes me feel good about swimming in my tail.
I think I scared a girl once with my tail because she would get out of the water and refused to get back in when I was near (or maybe it was just a temper tantrum with her mother, idk). Then again my burgundy tail would spook me when I'd forget that I'm wearing it. I have a severe case of Selachophobia which is sad because I LOVE sharks.
Pre teen boys playing tag with my fluke while I was at the beach recently. That was kinda weird because I would not have thought boys would be interested enough to do that and they kept sneaking up behind me to do it too.
The occasional adult asking about mermaiding. Not very fun when my bf shows them the monofin, after they ask what a monofin is, and forgets to look and make sure kids are not around/looking.
This one bothered me when it happened: A guy heckled about me in my tail and started taking pictures of me (with a very unsavory look on his face!)while I was swimming with my bf.

I've had lots of kids come up to me and ask me if I'm a mermaid, but after I tell them that I am some will say "you can't be a mermaid! mermaids have long hair!" I think that's really funny.
other times, people will ask me about the monofin, so I tell them that it is my bones in my fin. (since I have a cloth tail, the monofin shows through when it is wet) and i find it funny when kids ask me what bones are. I have to tell them that it's just like how they have bones in their arms, but in my fin. :)

I like that idea!
I've had the usual excited kids, I hand them shells when I'm swimming at the beach.
I did have my bikini top start to fall off the one day when the beach was crowded, as I was trying to put my tail on in the water. It helped that my hair is really thick and long so I could kind of fix it behind my hair.
I swam in the pool at my alma mater and there were a bunch of real excited undergrads, including guys, they thought it was pretty sweet. Everyone is usually in awe when I say that I made it myself.

I was sitting on the couch in my monofin one day when my dog Topaz (jack russell) came trampling through the house. She seemed really interested in what was at the end of my feet and started pawing at it, when I flicked it she would back away and tilt her head XD <3

I had a little girl (2-3) grab my hand, hold it up and excitedly scream (at her mum) "I'm Holding a Mermaids Hand!"
I have literally been mobbed by girls and boys when I swim, and have a few times asked them to get off my tail so I can swim.
On a quieter day, I had a young pre-teen who would very closely follow me, not wanting to touch my tail or ask mermaid questions, just wanted to stick closely by my side and stare at my face.:$ Really sweet and kinda embarrassing, I think I was their crush. Luckily my mertender/Boyfriend wasn't there.
Another time, when I still had my first blue tail. one little boy saw me and yelled Shark-Monster!
His brother tried to tell him that I was a mermaid, but he insisted tht I was clearly a shark-monster out to get him.
He wasn't scared though and we played a game of swim-away, where he would swim up to me, but when I turned and saw him he would swim away (with me slowly following) to hide behind his dad. I would the swim back and he would eventually follow.

I had my first encounter with mermaid intolerance yesterday. :p A teenager saw me & yelled (mostly for his friends' benefit) "Hey, go back to the ocean where you came from!" Well, that was rude! Come to think of it though - can we be considered illegal immigrants?

I went to the beach in my tail today. I few young boys were playing pirates and turned to look at me, they immediatley yelled " Mermaid, mermaid!!"
I also had a little girl approach me, she said my tail was amazing. She asked to touch it and I let her. Before she left, she told me she knew a real mermaid would come to the beach and that she was so happy I was here! <3

If you come from the ocean, you might, I think it would depend on how much of the ocean is part of the country's territory. I mean, we have to own SOME of it, right? I live on Lake Superior, so I don't think I would be considered an immigrant. But maybe we could be considered aliens because you wouldn't think mermaids would be US citizens. We live in the water where no one knows we exist. hmmm...

Asylum Seekers or "boat-people" are made a big thing of in the Australian media and often (unfairly IMHO) villified by the Aussie government who will pack them to "off-shore processing centers" or "detention centers" which resemble highly crowded third world prisons.
All the same, I couldn't help but giggle and imagine the hate-filled Tony Abbot rant about the danger of these Illegal Mer-People trying to steal Aussie land, taxpayers money and jobs. Then pound on about there being Mer-terrorists hidden among these "Sea-People" out to get us.

Today, I wanted to swim in my tail for the first time in a while. So I was sitting on the ladder to my pool, pulling my tail on, then I had to turn, pull myself up the rest of the way, and make it over the side, and into the water. So I lift myself above the ladder and start to swing to launch myself, but ended up doing an odd jump with my fin over the side and slid underwater really fast. It was fun, after the initial terror of, "oh no, my fin caught the pool ring, brought it down, and the pool's going to drain behind me, and so on."

I really want to wear my tail to the beach- but it is from www.magictail.de and it was kind of cheap and unrealistic. I don't think the kids will think that I'm real. :( Once I wore it to my town pool and a little girl asked me where I bought my tail! It was so humiliating!
I don't want that to happen at the beach! Any suggestions?

Oh no! I'm sorry that happened to you! I've been in that situation before too. The way I see it is, I'm there for those who want to believe and for all the little kids/teenagers and adults who have lost their touch with fantasy, I'll be friendly and keep in mind how sad it must be to live without an imagination. I find having a positive attitude helps, believe in yourself and everything else will work out!
Also! I just checked out your site and I think you all look fin-tastic in your tails! Now get out there and have some fun!! :D

I went swimming in my tail for the first time on June 17 at Minerva Beach NY and I had a blast. When I was swimming I heard the life guard yell " HEY LOOK AT THE MERMAID". But it's kind of funny that I am a guy LOL. Then there was this young boy about between 8 an 10 years old and he was real curious . I heard him tell his mom that was with him an said "HE'S REAL MOM" I never laughed so hard in my life. Then the mom was asking me all types of questions , like how fast i swim and how long can i hold my breath. But other than that people looked and said that is realy neet and or cool. But great experience over all. I loved every minute of it.

Once I was at a outdoor fantasy fair as Ariel (golden mermaid (http://users.telenet.be/the-mermaid/pics/fenicia/ariel01.htm)) when a little girl dressed as Snowwhite came up to me for some pics and wouldn't leave anymore. She wanted to stay with me forever she told her mom. :)
At an other indoor fantasy fair I was as a dark yellow/orange mermaid (http://users.telenet.be/the-mermaid/pics/fenicia/meermin05.htm) when a little girl keep coming up to me and she was looking for where my feet where. So I told her that I don't have them, then she went looking under my fluke to see if I was hiding my feet there. That all because the only 'mermaids' she ever had seen before where girls in mermaid-like dress with a fluke over there feet.
Also at some of the fairs I go to as a mermaid, I hear people telling there friends/kids "look there is a real mermaid" as I pass by them in my wheelchair. :)

The first time out in my tail, my sister and I went to a beach on Lake Michigan. There were a few large, flat rocks near the water, so I threw down my towel and put my tail on there. The water temperature wasn't bad to my lower half, but it was hard getting the rest of the way into the water. For the most part the little kids didn't even notice I was there, but the teens did. They excitedly waved hi to the mermaid from the shore, and two boys asked if my mertender and I wanted to build a sand castle with them.
The second time I swam, I had to convince my dad that my tail wouldn't put a hole in the pool liner (the tail doesn't have a monofin in it yet). The next time I went over to take a quick swim before work, he asked where the mermaid was. lol. He's practically famous for saying no, then asking why people didn't just do what they wanted. :P
I really can't wait to go again, but the beaches around here seem to be all so expensive. Next year, I am definitely going to look into buying a beach pass somewhere nice.

I know what you mean I live in montgomery county NY and there is no place to go swimming unless you want to pay. Then there are a few state camp grounds one you have to pay $8.00 for the day which isn't bad but the other just down the road $3.00 a person which is nuts if you have a car load an it is state owned as well.

When I did my last mermaid photo shoot, which was at a local beach so there were a lot of people there including many kids. A whole bunch of young boys and girls started standing around watching me and one little boy said to me "Wow you're a real mermaid! So since you're a real mermaid can you turn me into Iron Man?" It was so funny and sweet. And he was being very serious too.

I was swimming at my gym's pool in my tail and at first, I was so worried about getting it on that I didn't notice everything around me. once I got it on and was swimming, I noticed three people who worked there just staring at me, one older man rubbing eyes as if he couldn't believe what I was wearing, and after a minute, a father and his two year old daughter were walking past the glass and they saw me. the little girl's eyes got about the size of apples and she just stared at me with a smile on her face. I crawled up on the side and flipped my tail over my head to show off for her. I've never seen a little kid so excited, it made me feel happy

Everyone in my apartments knows me as "Mermaid" or "Mermaid Girl" because when I go swimming, I wear my tail. Though last time, there was a family who had just moved in and the little boy started yelling "FISH!" for which I am now called "Fish" by his family. Though, I have been approached at the beach by a lifeguard who looked very curious. I just swam away underwater (I had gone out to where the water was five to eight feet deep) and he looked confused when I popped back up some distance away. Nobody really swims underwater at Galveston. Too murky. Though I can see just fine.
I love people's varying reactions to my tails.

Last Friday was my first ever ocean swim in the Delphine Tail. I had to put it on in public, long story & not hiding places. Some dad was laughing because, well.. getting into a silicone mermaid tail is quite inelegant thing to view! Finally had it on with only one of the foot straps on (couldn't find my rope pulls.. though I'd love thinner ones, these make rope marks up my calves because they're so thick we can't get them outta my tail once the straps are pulled on!) and some little girls and a guy were swimming near by. I though it'd be fun to swim near, because although my tail is shimmery white, they hadn't noticed a mermaid in close proximity. So, I swam by. Afterwhich, I found out I splashed their older male friend (brother? babysitter?) who laughed & was a sport about it. The girls were curious & asked where I got my tail. It was kinda funny.
There was a little girl later who seemed interested in the (resting) beached mermaid, surrounded by adult humans. She was shy, but intrigued, so I kicked my fluke for her to see my tail move & her face burst into a huge grin. There was another little boy with his mom, who embarrassed him by breaking out into "Part of Your World" from Disney's Little Mermaid!!! She literally said, "Oh, I've never expected to see a mermaid!" and approached with her son, and started singing. She wasn't bad, but he was super embarrassed and started backing away saying "I don't like it." They later saw me dip into the water and emerge with a pair of human legs, carrying my own scaly skin like a selkie leaving the water. What a story these kids will share with their friends and family!
This was my first time in public as a mermaid, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Funny enough, it was also a double date with my guy, my best friend & hers. I'm pleased to say my friend's beau though my senior thesis project was pretty cool (which won him some points for being open to his girlfriend's strange but interesting mermaid friend, lol!!!). Even though I was super pooped, swimming in the waves is more exhausting than a pool. Anyone else agree? I'd only ever mermaided in a pool before, where it gives you the opportunity to rest your arms on the pool edge.) Still want to do it again, while summer keeps the water warm! XD I hope to go again in a week or so, or this week at the soonest.
Mers, I LOVE your adorable stories. They make me smile. I'm happy to hear most of you have positive mermaiding experiences. Anyone have more?

Today, my some of my sister's friends were visiting, and I was out in the pool practicing. Two of them came out and asked to touch my tail. I thought it was kinda funny since they're 17-19 yrs old, and have been watching me make my tails for months, they know that the material is fabric... :)

Thank you, Mermaid Danielle!
I guess this is funny? When I was swimming as Ariel (my very first tail, fabric) I had a dinglehopper with me. A little girl *demanded* that I let her brush my hair with it. As she was brushing it, she started rattling off all these reasons why I wasn't really Ariel. One of which was because Ariel's hair is much longer and thicker hair than mine... Ya, she was a pushy little girl. Haha
Another was when I was in my red neoprene tail and people saw the "3D" scales they thought they werw raised, but when they touched them they would be so shocked! They're super smooth! Haha just those reactions and the "Can I touch it?" Looks/comments. :-P

As she was brushing it, she started rattling off all these reasons why I wasn't really Ariel.
Really? Funny that she wanted to brush your hair and tell you her reasons.. Curious, did you tell her your tail is like Ariel's, or that you were Ariel?
..the "Can I touch it?" Looks/comments. :-P
Haha, I had that, too. Although it a totally natural reaction to want to touch something we've never been exposed to before, it's still funny when people ask!

I was cosplying Ariel (red hair, green tail with the split fluke and white fins, and purple "shell" bra), so it was sort of implied. Plus, lots of people were calling me Ariel. Though, I can't quite recall if I told *her* I was Ariel. @.@

When I took my tail out for her maiden swim, I was being ogled by some people in a boat. I think I about made one due laughing when I went to pull myself back into my dinghy and about slid off the opposite side. I also got some laughs, funny looks and kids pointing when I went to go back to the marina and had my tail still on, propped on the other side of the boat, letting it bounce and wave with the wake. I have to say, I couldn't keep the smile off my face nor the laughter from erupting!
