I've been waiting to make a tail for quite some time now and have been asking a lot of questions on here and you've all been great! After booking our vacation to Punta Cana last night, I've decided it's time to get started so I can take my tail with me!!! I have till September 2nd to finish it! I'll be posting pics as I go!

So this afternoon I decided to start on my handmade Monofin. I'm using some filppers I already have and I bought a sheet of Lexan from Home Depot ($69.95)
I traced out 1/2 of my design on cardboard, cut it out and traced it on to my pattern paper. I only did 1/2 so I could flip it so its even. (My art skills aren't so good)

You don't want those points on your fin! First, they are dangerous, and second, they will break! I've broken quite a few. You can do that with your fluke, but your monofin needs to be blunt. Those points will also cut through your fluke and stab someone!

Mermaid Clara

What Pearlie said, you're going to need to round out those pointy parts, lexan is super sharp after it's been cut and pointy parts will wear holes into your fabric and poke people

Awesome, I can't wait to see your progress! Btw now is the time to invest in medical tape to protect your fingers from blisters! Hand sewing really kills your hands, especially if you are working with neoprene and sequins. Oh and use fishing line to sew the neoprene, the lower the number on the spool of fishing line the stronger/thicker it is, I'm using 8 and 10 thickness.

Today we cut out the fluke using a jigsaw, then I sanded down the rough spots. I'm getting ready to attach my flippers to the Lexan, hopefully all goes well!

So while working full time as well as trying to finish real estate school I'm still working on my tail. It's been slow going but it's coming along! Dead line is June 26th for a photo shoot.
I've been working on the sequin strips mostly, I've found that creating a grid helps keep them in line. (Wish I'd have thought of that when I started!
I'm gluing the strips with E6000 then I'll be stitching them down. I'm getting ready to order my teal sequins so I can start filling it all in! I'd like to add my shelf liner fins soon too.

Sorry there haven been many updates! It's slow going with the 12mm sequins!
I've also realized my mistake of glueing my Lexan Mono Fin in before I stitched on the sequins. (Ugh first big mistake) I'm hoping the E6000 hold the pink strips on. My teal sequins are larger and they should be in I'm a couple days. Maybe I'll have better luck sewing them! I'll try to post pictures tomorrow of my updates!

So I was really concerned about the 22mm shells having such a weak top loop and no bottom loop, I'm still not sure I trust E6000 100%. I decided to make a hole in the bottom. Rather then drilling and breaking them, I heated a needle with a candle and poked holes in them! Nice and smooth, no mess!http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160408/43742d7b5b9f1d317e5533eb4d00b795.jpg[/

Thank you! I really want to see everything work but as I'm moving along I'm realizing the E6000 seems stronger then the clear fabric industrial thread I've gotten from Joann Fabric! So many threads have been helpful! I plan to still sew everything that I can on the tail part because I plan to actually use this in the ocean. I want to sew everything down and then reglue the edges because I'm still not certain about the holes that the sequins provide, so I've been making my own.

I'm hoping to have enough progress from some more pictures tomorrow! I added some "shelf paper" fins! Currently I've glued 1 side with E6000 and have weights on it while it drys. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get the other side glued down as well as do some more work on the body. The 12mm sequins are taking forever! I can't wait to start on the larger teal ones!

Actually, the e6000 might make it a little easier to replace sequins when needed. I can imagine having to secure broken thread and then sew more on would be kind of a pain. But with e6000, just glue some more on. Or maybe I'm wrong lol. But it's looking incredible so far!

I haven't had it in the water but everything is very "stuck" the E6000 seems like it will work. I'm gluing both sides. I also plan to do long strips along the back zipper. Considering putting a couple of heavy duty stitches in the corners and middle of the shelf liner just to make sure it doesn't come loose.

So I had my first huge set back! After taking the picture above I continued to sew on my sequins. (In the photo the back is also almost finished) I got one side totally done and decided to try it all on and work on fitting everything to the monofin. Apparently even sewing the sequins vertically I lost a ton of stretch! [emoji31] I couldn't even begin to get it zipped.... The only way I could think of to fix it was to open both of the side seams and add extra material. My plan from here out is to work from the bottom up making sure that I can still zip it.
I wanted to make sure it was really snug fitting so that it doesn't bogg down with water.
Having only a little over a week to have this finished, I'm starting to get a little stressed!

That's what I thought too after reading tons of posts! I did the entire top half before I stitched the sides and it was fine, perfect fit. Finished the seams and everything on one side and all of a sudden it wouldn't zip!
I've added some neoprene insets along the sides and the sequins cover it just fine. Ive got the knee to ankle area finished now! Hoping to finish the top part tomorrow and the fluke attachment point over the weekend! Pics to follow!!!

Your tail is coming along wonderfully! I commend you for sewing. Lol
I'm trying to somewhat repair/replace sequins on mine and I tried sewing... a bit difficult, especially trying to poke the needle through not only the neoprene, but the E6000 layer already there. Lol A few tips and warnings if still needed ...
1.) Seems like you've already found this out, but after attaching sequins, however you may do it, but I used E6000, the stretch completely goes away sadly. I made a rough casting of my legs out of plastic lining and duct tape and stuffed it with towels and such for a somewhat leg shape so it wasn't much different when I finished the gluing process. ;)
2.) Be sure to have extra sequins for mishaps or if later on after use, replacements. ;)
3.) The E6000 is great and strong! :) Haven't had many fatalities with it. It's the glue Cartwright's used. I ordered and used the iridescent shells. Not what you have. It looks like your metallic ones are IN the plastic. The iridescent effect on mine was created by the company attaching a thing backing of metallic plastic to the hard plastic of the sequin. That's what my issue is right now. Not the E6000. So I hope all goes better for you, I don't wish this stress and somewhat disappointment on anyone. Lol After putting so much work into my tail, it's kind of disheartening to see dozens of sequins having to be removed or lost.
4.) Like others have said, be sure to have some sort of air flow or ventilation while using the E6000 especially for an extended amount of time. It's very noxious and has some serious effects if it gets out of hand. ;)
5.) When using your tail, be gentle when putting it on and swimming, especially if around rough materials or children. As I'm sure you know, the sequins are delicate. Hahaha Just a precaution most people already know and I'm sure you do. ;)
I think that's it. And I'll definitely let you know about what I do to fix my predicament. Any questions, feel free to ask. And I can't wait to see this finished! So happy more people are getting into sequined tails! :))

You may have said this already and I may have missed it, but what is the name of the blue color sequin you are using?

I've finally finished my sequin tail! Since I live in Ohio and started it in March, I've never tried even the fluke in the water! I'm planning to try it out this weekend so I'll post photos/videos! I was supposed to have a photoshoot last weekend but my makeup artist was sick so we had to reschedule. :( boooo Hope to have a new date soon!

wow! I love it!

Im really happy with it and it swims really well! I just need to take the waist in a bit! I'm now looking in to starting a silicone tail after the summer! It will be much easier to travel with! (My sequin fluke is pretty big and doesn't bend! While I was working on this tail I left it on the kitchen table for easy access. (My husband is a saint lol) I noticed that the pink sequins faded quite a bit (they also sepearted on some) the larger bule ones are doing well!

Wow that speed and form! I really like how your fin arches and dips in the water with you not still and unnatural looking. I keep rewatching again and again, congrats on your tail!

Just read through the whole thread and love your tail! I was wondering if you could clarify just what you sewed and what you glued? i.e. the fluke was glued I think and the small sequins but the large blue ones you sewed? Thanks!

Ok I've started tackling a sequin project. I love the shape and size of the small pink sequins you used! Where did you order them from? I've been searching for bulk sequins in that shape.

They are the 12mm sequins from Cartwright's sequins. You can get them at ccartwright.com. I think Mermaid Kariel also sells this size on her website

I ordered them from Cartwrights! They looked great when I started but they faded really really bad. The other colors have held up ok though.
