I've seen several posts from Mers using Cubierta shelf liner, has anyone tried to paint, stain or dye this? If so what did you use and how did it work.

I know it can be done since Kariel and Hannah both have used the liner and had it painted somehow. I didn't attempt to paint mine though.

It can be done using the Krylon spray paint made for plastic. http://www.fullsource.com/krylon-fpp/?krylon_colors_2=83&gclid=CLv6ovv_qssCFQsQvQodowcI2w

No prob! The only downside is it will be opaque, which was something I didn't really like.

Is there more drag or will it feel heavier to swim in than in an all fabric tail and fins? Does the shelf liner flex and move with you? Or it stay stiff and unyielding?

Curious because I now want to take my dorsal fins a step further than it being all fabric ones.

They're really flowy, I used them for my last tail, I didn't keep it one solid piece since I cut it into strips but it would have worked the same as one solid piece.

I've also been looking into long fringe! I think it would be really pretty in the water!

Hmm... I'll try the shelf liner when I make next season's swimsuit. I've still got two newish ones and the third which was the first suit I made.

I recently purchased some shelf liner myself and I had been wondering the same things. I tried to use some permanent markers thinking it would stain the plastic and be translucent but it came off easily with water even after waiting over night. I think it's gonna require some dye of some kind to stain the plastic to keep in see through. I dunno if that is your goal as well, but I'll keep you posted on what I try if you like.

Try enamel paint or oil paint. They stick better to plastic than acrylic paints.

I have really been trying to find a transparent way to paint or dye the shelf liner. I saw some people using fabric dye but they were boiling the object they put in and that wouldn't work here. I watered down some acrylic in the hopes of making it transparent and it didn't want to dry and certainly wasn't soaking in to the plastic.

What if you used the permanent marker and used a clear spray paint sealant?

Well I have those things in the house to try but I worry about using toxic stuff in the water.

You can actually permanently stain them certain colors! So, story time!

I have a clear bathtub mat and sometimes when I dye fabrics I kiiiiinda forget to take it out. So when I use really hot water, my bath mat gets a new color (the poor thing)

If you make a dye bath using fabric dye (either really works) using really hot water, you can generally stain these things. Now you won't get like a dark color. Red will likely be pink but it does give them some color!

I have been thinking about fabric dye. I plan on testing it soon. Problem has been the fluke I made is very big and I want to do splotches like a koi fish obviously. I am gonna try it on a small piece and see. Boiling the dye and painting or sponging it on.

Permanent marker will stain it but clear sealant will peel off.

Just reading this and the shelf liner makes me wonder about using silicone baking sheets? Anyone do or try that?

Those are expensive!

Yeah, I just tried to find rubber mats when I was first making my fluke extension and those were pricey so I can't imagine silicone baking mats. I ended up doing shelf liner because I liked the clear fluke look but the paint is a bit of a pain.
