View Full Version : Your next fabric tail?

So I was reading elsewhere in the forum that recreational mers are under represented on MerNetwork because generally most of the discussions on here center around professional silicone tails or hand crafted tails and so on. I thought it would be good to have a thread where us recreational mers (or even the pro ones) can post about either a brand new fabric tail they have just purchased and are proud of, or about a tail they have been eyeing off and saving up for their next fabric tail.
Currently I own a blue FinFun tail but I have been eyeing off this beauty from Swim Tails for my next tail:

What do you guys think?

Those Swimtail ones won't be good for adults I think. The monofin is so tiny, its not practical esp if you're an adult and you want speed and propulsion.

That may be a valid issue. :(
But it IS pretty!

I'm pretty sure it uses the Aquarius monofin which is an adult monofin. I'm thinking if I don't like the monofin I could always use the tail skin over the top of my FinFun monofin.

Worse case senario, you can always cut off the fluke part, replace it with a better monofin, and sew on a new fluke with contrasting fabric. :)

Definitely not the Finis Aquarius. The shape is totally different. It may be the finis mermaid monofin though...

The mermaid tail picture is probably taken with the kids monofin in it though.

I love my fabric tails <3 as soon as I finish my silicone one I want to make my own spoonflower fabric and make a printed spandex tail for myself.

My next tail is a lime green scale tail from Sun Tails. I ordered it as a kickstarter reward ages ago. Just awaiting the day when they have the green tails made.

They have other scale tails now. Gorgeous looking ones! I love it for the fact that unlike the Fin Fun tails, the scales taper off naturally on the fluke. Just like the Magictails do too.

I wanted to do that too! But I don't like how fabric tails sit on my legs since I'm bow legged there's a giant gap between my lower leg that makes for a very soggy flap of fabric and it's not really pretty

Alright so I didn't end up buying the silver and black sea serpent tail, instead I bought 2 new tail skins, Ariel Green from FinFun and the Turqouise scale tail from Magictails! I can't wait til they arrive and I can go try them out! I also have a whole heap of shiny lycra fabric sitting around in my closet that isn't being used so I plan to sew a couple of other tails with that. Haven't decided what fabrics/colours I want yet.

No I decided to try it with my existing FinFun monofin since it seems to be basically the same. Though my FinFun monofin is already starting to fall apart (theres a tear in the neoprene) so I may end up replacing it and buying the magictail monofin...will see how it goes though!

Making tails is an addiction. I know this to be 100% true because I now have enough tails for the next couple of seasons (years) of swimming, but I still want more!

From the US site. To be totally honest I'm rather disappointed in the Australian shop, I was hoping to support them but all they sell is the Mermaidens scale tails. They don't stock Ariel Green which is a Sparkle Tail and they don't even sell the matching bikini tops or bottoms. I wanted to buy matching bikini bottoms for both my Ariel green tail and the Mermaidens blue tail so when my tail starts to come off (has been happening a lot, I need to sew in a new elastic) my swimmers still match :)

Just ordered my first monofin+tail!! (I was supposed to wait until the end of the week, but I'm so excited and also they're having a contest through the end of next week, and if I get the tail in time, I'd love to enter! :p )

Yes, but the adult Aquarius only fits to US men's size 11. That size is the average US men's shoe size, which means its too small for half the men.

Congrats! Have you been swimming in it yet?
Oh and just so you know, its easier if you insert the monofin into the fabric first. Then you roll down the fabric all the way to put your feet in the monofin, and roll it back up when you're done!

No, I was at a con this weekend and got the dreaded con crud :( Once I can walk a straight line on land and look down without getting dizzy, I'll take the monofin to the pool :)
And yeah, I've read about both methods of putting on a fabric tail. I'm planning to try both, but that's the one I did in the video (partly b/c I didn't want to sit there in a bikini...)

What do you recretional mers recommend for fabric tailmakers? I'm looking at buying my first tail! The two retailers I am mainly looking at (though open to other suggestions) are mertailors and funfin! Either way I will NEED it to be custom made as my sizing is so off. I'm worried that mertailors may not be the way to go for a custom tail as I have read so many poor reviews. But I prefer their colours and read that their monofin is better. Any help is appreciated!

Miami Beach Mermaids make custom tails.
