View Full Version : Are real shells safe to use in the water?

This post could also fit under accessories but I thought I would put it here....

Anyway, this may be a stupid question but I wanted to know if you can use real
sea shells in the water. I want to make a mermaid top with lion paw shells from the
craft store but I would like to be sure that you can use them in the water before I start.

Shells will be fine in water - don't use dried starfish or other dead animals though, because they'll go soft and start rotting. I've got lion paw shells on my top :)

hmm...i knew real starfish would stink...but i didnt think about them rotting and falling apart....darn. cuz i've been putting them on everything!

Can't clear resin be used to seal dried starfish/seahorses (yes, I've seen these in craft stores!!) so they can be used in the water?

i would hope so...because i much prefer starfish over shells.

Whenever I collect shells at the beach, I put them in a bucket with some bleach and let it sit for an hour.

Then the dead fish smell fades completely and they're all cleaned off :) It works very well!

I've just made a mermaid shell top which has since been exposed to the water and so far the shells have been fine. I got them from Hobby Lobby.

the dollar tree has entire baskets of real shells for a buck. mostly lion paw shape-ish...but some of them have some amazing conchs and other more rare shells. it's like playing lotto scratcher with nature baskets. lol

I'll defiantly have to look in the dollar tree now if I want any more shells!
