Scale problems! Help!

So I'm making handmade scales to glue onto my old spandex tail, I made scales of various sizes and shapes to get a feel of what I wanted.
I tried gluing the different shapes down to see if the scale shape would influence how it holds.
It does.
The only scale that held out of the scales I actually liked was one shaped like Finfolk scales. 😓

Thats a problem because I OBVIOUSLY don't want to copy their designs.

Another thing is that my scales arent 3d like silicone scales are, they are paper thin, giving me a problem with, when the scales are laid out on top of one another, the whole thing looking like a giant blue blob, no dimension.

I remembered the Finfolk girls talking about how scale tipping added so much more demention to their scales so I tried it. And it worked! But it's hard to find paint that will stay on the scales while in water, the only colors I found were metallic. Gold being one of them. See where I'm going?

I just don't want to get finished with my tail, only to have people say I gold tipped my scales as a way to copy Finfolk.
My tail design is various shades of blue, and gold, so the gold tips look nice. Again, don't want to do it If I'm going to get people upset at me.

NOTE: this tail is for me. Not for sale. I may in the far distant future make them available to mermaids who aren't able to buy silicone tails. But I wouldn't add the gold scale tipping, and that would be after I make more working scale designs to add.

Side note:
My fluke design is original (as far as I know, but similar to numerous different flukes throughout the community, but that's the style that I like, sort of like FFs Loreena fluke but more plain.

Please don't pay attention to the super glittery scale, I was going to use them scarcely throughout the tail as a way to kind of symbolize my name "Shimmer" but I don't know if I like them much anymore

And I really look up to you, so it's nice to have your opinion, especially since you have such beautiful taste in tails.

I think it is alright if you go ahead and do the gold tipping. Like you said, it's going to be your personal tail and not for sale, and you're doing it for a reason other than just copying their ideas. I don't really see what would be the problem with it. You've put in the effort to get permission, so I think they'll understand if you move ahead

I don't see it as being a problem for a personal tail, you can do anything you like. The only conflict I would see would be if you were offering it for sale.

Okay, I'm really glad I took y'alls advice!
I made more scales, and today I worked on tipping, and shimmer scales. I laid them out the way they will be on the tail, and I have to say im in love with how it all looks together!!
The shimmery scales are definitely going to be a part of the tail!!

And I've come to realize, like the idiot I am, that before I can even remotely start laying scales, I have to finish the fluke, and fins first. 😖

So I have to refit my spandex where the monofin fits, to fit my much bigger monofin before I can even start on making the outside or pretty part of the fluke.

But I can't do that until I go back to my other house in a few days. Ugh the process of moving is creating such a lag.

Thank you! I've had a hard time getting the gold paint to stick to the scale, but I've put it through several tests, and I think I've got it

Made one test hip fin, and am not finished quite yet with painting it. But this was with a metallic yellow, But it turned out more mustardy than I would've liked, and I have since added a layer of a softer metallic gold.

I think it'll be smooth again when you paint it. The paint should grab and fill up the rough spots. But I understand where you are coming from, its why I won't cut my Wave.

I may try sanding and panting a small piece on the back of the fin where the foot pockets are

Plastidip might work, but the first time you scuff it, it will begin to peel off.

What do you think about maybe sanding it a little and trying 3d fabric paint? I tried without sanding, and it held when you don't mess with it, but if you were to try to rub it (like if you got sand on it or it got dirty and needed to rub it with your hand or a wash rag) it would come off. Granted i didn't try to take it in the shower to see if it would hold up, which is how most wash their tails.
Cured or not, Tulip 3d fabric paint WILL bond to itself, even if you are putting fresh, wet, non cured paint on the same brand of paint that is a year old. Its like rubber and is made to last in water without fading.

You can try the Krylon fashion spray paint. it hols to lots of stuff, plastic, rubber and i have used it for things and it works. May work for your tail. Cannot wait to see the finished product.
