View Full Version : Mercomplishments - Come brag!

I had a tiny accomplishment this morning: I've been going to pool regularly to get into shape for a tail and prove that I can commit before buying one. I started the month doing sets of 100/100/50 of free/breast/dolphin. (I throw in other things, but that's my basic set.) This morning, I felt comfortable enough to up my dolphin kick to 100yds as well, so now I'll do sets of 100/100/100. It's a tiny step, but I felt really happy about it, esp. since I'm finding it pretty hard to get across the pool doing dolphin kick as a human! Just another week and a half, and I'll be able to order my first monofin!

NOW I want to hear about your Mercomplishments! Is there something mer-related that you've been working to achieve and finally happened? Come brag about it!

Awesome! Those gradual gains feel so good :).

It's not super mer related but it's progress on my idel merman body. I hit new weight maximums at the gym for my pec flys and leg presses.

^ i've seen the progress pictures in the body goals thread :) you look awesome

here's my BraggingMcbraggarton thing: I landed a mer gig at dreams take flight and i'm super excited about it! (dry event as there's no pool)

Im bragging because.... I finealy opened myself up for bookings as a mermaid! Ive been working as a contractor for a childrenes party company for a bit, but she dose not offer mermaid party's so I opened up my website and gig salad and I can take on mermaid party's now! Im also offering my fairy and unicorn characters as well. Its a big step for me! Now I just have to get my first booking. :D

The monofin in my Fin Fun tail was too soft, so I made a new one from Polycabonate, and it works great!

This thread is so encouraging guys! Love it!!! When I first got my monofin (I havnt been able to buy my fin yet) I was having a really hard time swimming in it and keeping it underwater. But I noticed that past few times that I've swam in it it felt a lot easier!

Reviving this thread b/c I managed to flail my way through a couple of flip-turns today!! :D I can't even do flip-turns without a tail, but yesterday I went into the dive pool and practiced flips and flip-turns in my tail, and today I was able to successfully flip-turn in my tail TWICE while swimming laps! I'm sure it wasn't pretty, but it happened! :yay:

I'm still relatively new to mer swimming but after taking a free diving course recently I can now consistently swim a 25m lap underwater with my tail in one breath! I found the secret was to relax and take it more slowly rather than trying to get to the end as fast as I could which I am naturally inclined to do!

Out of interest what are other people's distances they have achieved in one breath?

30 meters. I did one lap, a sloppy turn, went a bit farther, and came up. I would do a few strokes, then coast.

I can only occasionally make it across the pool (25 yds) taking one breath in the center, so I guess about 12yds. I have exercise-induced asthma tho, so that's already a huge improvement for me. :)

I have made it 50 yards before, but that was when i was training year round as a competitive swimmer. I know in tail i can do a 25 easy but i have not tested it... Humm... Perhaps i should get in the pool with my tail next week and see how far i can push it...

I can do the full 25 m and a bit on one breath. Though I haven't figured out how to do a proper turn like the way pro swimmers do, so I just turn the mermaid way! Haha

I tried one session to try to master the pushing off the wall that pro swimmers do, bad bad idea! With the extremely rough surface of my pools walls, I just about shredded my poor little tail! (And ended up with a couple of holes that needed repair!) I won't be trying that again! But I am trying to learn the arc turn method.

I have a tiny mercomplishment that I achieved today. My natural habit is to swim hell for leather and with my arms back, today I was working on the streamlined position with arms forward (which I hate normally because I don't feel I get anywhere), and also learning to glide in between some of my beats (also difficult because in my finfun tail you need to build up enough speed to feel like you're not completely stopping when you glide). Anyway, for the first time I achieved a 25m swim following both of these goals! When I finally got it it just felt so natural!

I've convinced all the ankle biters at my local pool, that there is a real mermaid living in the deeper waters of the competition pool!

For flip-turns in a tail: do a forward flip and when you're mostly around, twist your upper body around so that you're facing the direction you were coming from, and then just let your tail follow. It definitely takes a while to get the timing right. I practiced it many times in the dive pool before trying to apply it within the confines of a lane. (Side note: I do the constant-nose-blow while doing this; otherwise, you WILL get water up your nose, just like you would with a regular flip - unless you've got a nose plug)

I managed to do a 100 fly yesterday during my lap swim! It was with my monofin on but still a big step up from being totally exhausted after just 25 like when I started a month or so ago.

What does 100 fly mean? Is that 100 meters continuous swimming?

In swim training fly is often the shortened nickname we give to the butterfly stroke but I'm not sure if that's what she meant.

Yep, that's what I meant. I swam 100 meters butterfly stroke continuously. :)

Achievement unlocked: Mer trickster! Today I was playing around with different tricks and making some combos out of them, like going from a flip to twist to forward swim (forwards and backwards flips) mer backstroke to a backflip to forward swimming, and adding lots of barrel rolls and turns and different undulations to my forward swim! Felt very comfortable and natural!

Achieved some awesome PBs today in only my second ever free diving class with a local free diving group - 2:45 static breath hold (previously 1:45), 55m (previously 35m) dynamic (swimming underwater laps) and a 1 min breath hold at the bottom of a 3m pool.

MermaidCelesteFL

That's awesome!

I also beat my static today at 3:06!

I swam 100yds continuously this morning! I know this seems like no-biggie to a lot of people, but my exercise-induced asthma means I usually have to rest between laps. When I first started swimming again at the beginning of the year, I rested at each end of the pool (25yds) and worked up to resting after each lap (50yds) and have recently been trying to do 1.5 laps (75yds) continuously - so it was a real shocker this morning when I managed to do 2 full laps! I felt like I was constantly coming up for breath that last length, but I'm glad I pushed through! :D

Still struggling with turning around in the shallow end though....

Out of interest does anyone time their lap and try to set personal bests on that? I normally don't but today I thought I'd give it a go. I was able to swim 25m doing Mer backstroke in 18 seconds, and about 20 seconds doing my underwater lap as fast as I could (though I could probably cut that down a couple of seconds due to my sloppy take off). Does anyone have any similar comparisons?
