^ Sounds like you had alot of fun! :)
Nat Wails & Joy and Raptors: I am not reffering to being sexy, I just wanted to know if it mattered what you look like becuase many pros (Lindon, etc) are very beautiful women who dress in very proffestional looking tails. I understand That it is not playboy but i do see your points...
Neither was I, the example was purely to point out the fact that your appearence is the last thing that will be on the mind of the kids in question.

I'm thinking about become a mermaid who appears at childrens parties, but I have a sensitive topic I'd like to ask about..
Does it matter what you look like in order to appear at events?? Can you be any size, any shape, any color? Does it matter
if you don't have long hair or you don't look like a model? Does it matter if you are fat, thin, tall, short, busty, or flat chested?
To you have to look like the fantasy to be the fantasy?

Personally I believe it has more to do with how you will react with the children rather than what you look like. :3

ALL MERMAIDS ARE UNIQUE, Kids have many different views of what they see in mermaids But in reality their in awe of just seeing a "real live" mermaid there. So it should be fine :)
i know some Merfolks on here who perform and have short/medium length hair so it shouldnt make a difference at all.
just as long as you dont do this, your good to go..lol:

Well I have turquoise hair that is almost never longer then my shoulders and stand at a bold 5 feet 2 inches and 3/4 of an inch (THOSE 3/4 ARE VERY IMPORTANT).
It doesn't matter what you look like as long as you are confident, that's what makes a mermaid (even if the confidence is faked)
Fake it till you make it ^_^

I do childrens parties and I could be described as "plain" at very best. My looks are NOT my strong point, in fact they're my weak point. I was really worried when I was starting out that kids would pick up on that, that they would tell me mermaids are supposed to be beautiful and therefore I must be a fake etc etc. but in reality they've been absolutely gobsmacked by me every time. Sirena's right, it's all about confidence, and playing the part with absolutely no doubts :)

though there aremany varid opinions, its all how you play the part I believe its "ide" that uses a mermagica tail on occasion. I dont think she's had any issues with those tails and im sure you wont either. Always remember "Be the mermaid!"

I know "Ide" the swimming mermaid on our forum uses a mermagica tail, im sure she hasnt had any issues with this tail and the kids. Its all about how you play the part, Just remeber to hold your head(and flukes) up high and "Be the mermaid".

Also, keep in mind that there's a difference between being pretty and being sexy and being beautiful. A lot of the classic images of mermaids (coughArielcough) are designed for the sexy end of the spectrum, but they're fictional characters (and someone who resembled Ariel in body shape and facial features would probably be very odd-looking in person... and you'd worry about snapping her like a twig whenever you hugged her). Being pretty is not really that difficult to pull off with the help of hair styles, makeup, outfits and tails, and being beautiful is less about how you look and more about who you are and how you act. You also have the advantage of being real and being courageous enough to dress as a mermaid in front of a large group of children, which, if you think about it, is far more than Andersen's heroine ever did.

We're talking about kids parties here, not a Playboy centrefold; they're more interested in the idea of seeing a real live mermaid than commenting on how she measures up to unrealistic ideas of so-called beauty, believe me.

Once you catch a child's imagination, the rest follows naturally.

This is such a wonderful thread!
Ah, went I did a kids party I worried and still worry actually about these things as well. But the children were ESTATIC! And they were all "oh you're so beautiful little mermaid you're hair is so pretty" and other cute compliments. The only troubles were some 11 year old boys who were "I can see your fin. That's tails fake. I don't like mermaids. Blablabla" but that was it! Everything was wonderful and fun :D

Here is a new question I want to dish out... Does it matter wheter or not your tail is fabric? Is it reccomened to get a realistic tail instead (even if a magictail.de)?? Thanx :)

When I first started mermaiding in public I was really worried about disillusioning kids who saw me put on or take off my fabric tail - I want to encourage belief in magic, not destroy it! So I started telling them that my grandmother was a mermaid who married a human; that makes me only part mermaid, so I only have a real tail for part of the year. Once my tail days are used up I have to wear a costume until the next year. Even the skeptical ones say "Oh, that makes sense".

^ True...but you can always get someone to stall the kids until after you put on the tail :)
Cute story! :)

I've heard varying opinions on this - some say that having a fabric tail is lazy and not professional enough, some say it doesn't matter.
From my personal experience, I've been performing as a professional mermaid for three months now and every gig I have done has been in a fabric tail. I have never had a child tell me I'm 'not real', I've never had anyone comment on it being unrealistic or anything. My photos and promo material clearly show a fabric tail and people still hire me.
Not to sound conceited, but I think people don't mind so much because my performance is strong. I'm completely in character, my act often involves singing, telling stories, playing games etc, I guess what I'm saying is that the tail is not the focus of what I do, but compliments it.
My point being, if what you are doing in your appearances is strong, people won't notice/mind a fabric tail as much.
PS - I should point out that I am planning on beginning use of a latex tail within the next few months. I think a fabric tail is perfectly acceptable for the reasons above but I would still like to begin using a latex one :)

And do u know what I tell kids about fabric tails? That when I get older (and most mermaids) have mammal llike tails until they grow older when the develope mor scale like tails based off of where they are from. And even then its also is base on thier personalities. They are usually gobbsmacked and starry eyed. Its really cute

I go with that one too. I only really have to answer that when there's a silicone tailed mermaid nearby. They're fine with my flat painted scales. I was sitting with mermaid meridian and a kid asked why our tails were different and she said "cuz I'm older" and the kids were all: oh yes of course
