View Full Version : Mermaid Keena's First Ever Silicone Tail

Good (super early) Morning from near Perth Western Australia! Its currently 12.07am and I cannot sleep because I am super excited!! HAHA!! I've FINALLY, after about two years, decided to go for it and make a silicone tail myself! I have NEVER worked with silicone or fibreglass before so It is a huge learning curve! I'm super excited.
I've already started with my scale sheet and my scale tester sheet. That is all done!
36098
CHECK!
I have done two trials of molding techniques one just fiberglass:
Equipment:
36099
Safety gear on:
36100
Resin and Matting done:
36101
Now just the wait to see if it worked.....
The Reveal:
36102
So something went wrong - I think I didn't put enough resin on to soak the matting or I should've searched for some gelcoat!
NO PROBLEMS! I figured I will just try a different way!! Plaster of paris isn't "that" expensive....
36103
Waiting, waiting... OH! I wonder if fiberglass will stick to the back to make it a bit stronger???
36104
I did not skimp with the resin this time! I put heaps on there!!
Wait for the fiberglass to set....
36105
Awww yay!! It looks gorgeous! I cant wait to see how the hole turns out when I silicone test it!! BUT the fiberglass just pulled right off! So I think I'm going to find an aviary wire, from the hardware store, for my big sheet to keep the plaster strong! I'm sure I saw someone do that somewhere!!
(unless someone can let me know how to get the fiberglass to stick to the plaster?)
I now have a fiberglass and a plaster mold to test my silicone in, but no $$ to buy it... hahahahaha! NO PROBLEMS! I'll just start some designing and sketching.
I did a few sketches based on moths, butterflies, flowers and fairies and I did even do some underwater critters amazingly! So here are a few sketches:
36108
I think you may be able to see a colour trend? I love pinks and purples and I thought to add black (slimming) and a pop of blue or green to contrast!
I finally came up with this design!! I love it! Also it doesn't seem to crazy!
36106
Not sure if I want the "seaweed" blue (it was supposed to be a dark purple pencil -_-) or purple or even a random green haha. Thanks to The beautiful Mers at Tiggs tails for the top inspiration And Merbella Studios for the fins on the tops (thats where I first saw it and it looked AHMAYZING!)! Also on here is a thread by Jessica on how to do scale tops!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had no idea how to hide these HUGE boobies and keep it decent! (18F over here -_-)
36107
If you can't see the colours properly I'm sorry - its just pencil haha. For the tail its going to start off bright blue -> pink -> purple - > dark purple - >black. then the fluke is going to be the other way: Black -> dark purple -> purple -> pink -> Bright blue. Also the side fins will all be the same size (saves molding HEAPS!) and the hip fins will match the top fins!
So I think that's where I am at so far! I think I may be buying my silicone from Barnes? not 100% sure it depends on pricing plus shipping. But not 100% sure where to get my pigments from and what the definitely shouldn't have in them (I know some will inhibit curing!)
So excited to start molding my hip and side fins! Getting some plasticine ASAP because the Air dry clay the art store suggested was sooooooo frustrating and super messy hahahaha AND it broke when it dried!! ARGH!
I best head to bed - we have a big family day tomorrow! Hubby to be and I are taking our two boys up to see Mermaid Amelia and Mermaid Jessica Pearl at Elizabeth Quay! (My boys both want to be merfolk when they can swim - my Eldest is 5 and he's colouring my designs and trying to figure out what he wants his tail to look like! My youngest is nearly 3!!)

My drawn out fluke! My monofin goes just over the yellow and white join. Also the two shorter fins have no monofin in it at all so it will hopefully be flowy.
36361
I think I need to make the shorter fins a bit longer to balance it out more.
I also did some work on my side fins.. but didnt like them ahaha

I'm pretty sure people have used eyeshadows with success.
I also know you need to be so careful with the mix ratio of that silicone.

For the silicone you got, I'd probably add the pigment to the part that you need more of and then combine them and mix. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it starting to set while you're trying to mix the colour through. :) just a thought

I ordered some mica pigments to test out! I am SUPER excited!! I got 10 for AUD$22.60 (including postage). Much better price! HAHAHA joys of ordering from your own country!!
These are the colours I ordered:
36370
I cant wait to see how they turn out! I'm planning on using the Intense sparkle white or the shimmer violet in the "slime coat" for extra sparkles! (if it stays kind of transparent) I cant wait to try them out. Should be here by the 7th April at the latest! Which is Thursday - so I'll be able to donate my plasma then do some tests while my mum has the boys! YAY!

I mixed up all the blues plus shimmer violet and black in the side that looks green. The purple side has all the pinks/purples and the intense white.
Just to see if they'd cure.
Then i did peach pink and made a shell and brightest blue and made a shell then poured on the leftovers.

The Water Phoenix
04-12-2016, 08:21 AM
Did you use a different silicone for the top coat? Silicone should bond to silicone. That's really odd, I haven't had any problem with mine.
Mermaid Keena
04-12-2016, 08:48 AM
nope its the same silicone. I was thinking maybe something got on the cured silicone before i coated it. :S
The Water Phoenix

I think Perth's dodgy weather at the moment has something to do with it :3
Ashton
04-12-2016, 12:45 PM
Did you add any type of thinner? I have seen something like that happen when people use xylene.
PearlieMae
04-12-2016, 12:55 PM
A: Your topcoat is too thin.
B: Did you properly clean it before coating it?
• Wash the cured silicone with water and dishsoap (Dawn original blue - do you have that in Australia? - is the best for this), rinse it well with clear water and let dry.
• Then wipe it all down again with isopropyl alcohol, the highest percentage you can get...91% is what I use...Let it dry.
• Try not to handle the silicone much, the oils from your hands will affect adhesion.
• A generous topcoat will look milky; too thin, and it will peel. Try a couple of thin coats to keep the topcoat clear. You don't have to clean between coats if you do them in quick succession and don't handle the new silicone too much.
• Work in small patches at a time.
PS: Let it cure a couple of days before handling to give the new silicone time to cure completely.
Hope this helps! Patch test the process in case it's something else. :mermaid kiss:

Then I "thought" I was adding Intense sparkles.... The white part didnt register'in my brain so I assumed it was going to just be super sparkly... I was wrong.
36506
So I'm now seeing how well the sparkly white blends with the pink I've decided on. I'm also trying to see how see through it is! I might be doing white down the middle front of my tail - if this actually works. (yep the pink does look blue in this picture - but it depends on the lighting haha)

Ive made my scale sheet so it has a lot of extra on each side so ill be pinning one side on my body mold then laying the other side on and pinning to match. Then i'll cut it out a bit at a time to match it up. Well thats what is in my head haha i guess i wont really know until i try :D

Very cool fluke shape :) Good luck!
Whenever I'm going project that tend to result in blisters, I always to to take a break every few minutes to stretch my hands and massage my fingers. It helps to make the skin a bit more flexible and prevent blisters :D

you dont have to use fiberglass if you dont want to, I only used it because I am well versed in it, and it is easy to get. You can use 2 part molding material from Smooth On I dont recall what it is called off the top of my head. But IF you do use fiberglass BE AWARE IT SMELLS (like ppl around you will smell it also, its that bad) and do it outside!
As for fiberglass matting, you dont need much, like 2 layers- maybe 3.
AND WEAR GLOVES WHEN YOU ARE DOING IT!!

Awwe thanks all! Its called modelling clay I couldnt find ingredients so fingers crossed its fine!
I've decided against fibreglass as i can not get it right with ALL my practice.. 100% over it!
Im planning on plaster of paris (thick) with a wire backing for extra strength. Fingers crossed i get no cracking!
Half way through ridges. Having a break now. Im not sure how thick the bits between ridges are supposed to be but heres hoping i eventually make it thick enough. Its pretty thin right now.

Not with this tail but I have made a scale sheet with plaster. I'd advise to use something like cardboard for the walls so you can easily tear it away and have more than one person to flip it over. It's definitely doable but you'll have to be rreeeaalllyy careful! :)

Got more plaster today... finally! Also is this the stuff that you can clean the silicone with before doing the slime coat? http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160726/c065a6c39fc8fc68998e64b8aca6574b.jpg
The name sounds familiar [emoji2]

You can find some for way cheaper than that! Go to the first aid section of your grocery store and pick up the highest percentage of rubbing alcohol they've got. I grabbed a huge bottle of 91% at Walmart for like 5 bucks. :) I just use a paper towel to clean the silicone and it works like a dream!

Lol, someone really made their own brand of alcohol? :lol:I would definitely just go to a general store and get it out of the first aid section. 91% is the strongest you can get generally over the counter, online you can get 99.9%. I use it all the time. If you don't know the difference, basically it's just less water in it. I have to use it for my job so the less water the better. But, for this, 91% would be just fine.

Extremely thin layer of gelcoat... will be doing more as i bought A LOT haha also its a bit patchy and started curing really quickly because its a beautiful 32C today here in Perth!
BTW gelcoat gets hot!!! My container was really hot with the leftover hard bits of gelcoat 😂 😂 😂
Im aiming for a smooth even layer of gelcoat then i will be backing it with fibreglass for a bit more strength. 😊

be careful, fiberglass can melt and deform craft foam.... I know from experience.
Gel coat should help you protect from that, but make sure you follow the directions of the gel coat mixing bottle!

two layers of gelcoat are done :thumbs up:
Fibreglass done  Now I'm just waiting for it to cure :D
Ordered my 22kg of Silicone! Also my pigments are on the way!!
TO DO:
* check the fibreglass/gelcoat scale sheet - fingers crossed it worked!
* use the modeling clay to cover all the gaps in the fluke mold and add the swirls. Add the scales to the fluke mold.
* Do a few gelcoat layers on the fluke mold - then fibreglass. *HOPEFULLY* if the scale sheet works!!
* Wait a week after the molding for the fibreglass to de-gass!
* Test the spray painted mold with silicone then decide if i will be spray painting the scale sheet and the fluke mold.
* Make a body mold to make seaming easier =)
* Pour actual Scales and Fluke! + Put it together!!
* Testing swim!
* Mercon in Busselton!!!

OK, that's not so bad :)
May I ask your estimate for the total costs of your self made silicone tail?
I'm using the same type of silicone, I didn't buy the 22kg drum and so far I've spent $588.50 AUD on silicone (however I'm casting thin). Adding into that pigments, tools, moulding media, etc has probably been around another $150 - $200. And then my monofin cost $160 something.
So all up building a silicone tail in Australia starts around the $1000 mark.

No idea what to do lol the netting wont cover the monofin colour. So maybe neoprene? But will silicone stick to neoprene!?
Or do i just do LOTS of pigment next time?

You can ad pigmented silicone to you netting before adhering the fluke. That did it for me

If you get neoprene make sure it's faced with fabric on both sides. I believe Moodfabrics.com has neoprene faced with purple fabric on one side.

Ive got pink neoprene (pink on one side black on other) but im going to try making it thicker and using the pink netting - even if i have to double layer it :)

You can try adding a layer of matte white pigmented silicone to the inside

Im going to use my fin fun skin as my scales. And only do my fluke as silicone (for now). I plan on hand sewing my scales over the top of the silicone with fishing line.
Going to do a small amount of purple where fluke and scales connect and blend to pink then pinky white. I will also cover the fluke with iridescent purple to up the shiny. I have neoprene covering the monofin which has helped. I have left drainage in the neoprene and i will be using a few straws in that area to leave drainage with the silicone.
Fingers crossed it goes to plan this time haha [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]

But at the moment if it turns out how i hope i will be happy. I'll be doing a black layer all over to thicken it up and make it waaaay less see through 😊 one week today and ill already be in busso for mercon!

They are ☺ but im putting a layer of black/grey on the inside... to stop the seethroughness ☺ so it may change it. Also its getting a "slime coat" of iridescent purple glitter so hopefully it'll brighten up a bit more 😊

Mermaid Keena,
I love love love your colors and sculpt! May I just suggest you integrate some powermesh to your silicone fluke where you will be sewing it to fabric. I would be afraid the stitches would eventually cut right through the silicone. You can integrate the powermesh by painting a thin layer of silicone as the glue, adding the mesh and let it dry, then another thin layer of silicone. I am using this technique for strenghtening peel-away aquarium silicone fins.

I was going to do that Dame Melusine but i coated the neoprene in silicone to stick it to the fluke. The only thing im sewing (hopefully) is the scales over the fluke. (Scales are bathing suit material)
Its all squashed together.... heres hoping it works!!!! Tomorrow we leave for mercon!

Pretty buoyant but im thinking thats from the neoprene. Also it fills with water so lifting the fluke out of water takes BULK effort until the water drains. 😂 so cool though@!!
