Alright I've been lurking at Mermaid stuff for a couple years now. About this time of year I always go looking at the stuff in prep for summer. Never got around to it. Well recently a pair of friends of mine got these beautiful silicone tails. And they're gorgeous. But the prices made me cry a little.
I'm gonna start small XD So when I become a mermaid, I will be a spandex mermaid XD Besides, I'm a cosplayer and I can sew and the temptation to make gorgeous fabric tails (with some ideas I have in mind >.>) is just a little too much to pass up! So that's my starter route.
I like how the Finis Aquarius looks. But I also love Mahina's monofin. I'm tall. I kinda want a wide fluke, y'know?
Anywho, I'm Kesra! I'm 29 and a cosplayer. (Almost 30.) I'm in the Eastern Kentucky/Appalachian region. I've been cosplaying for about 11 years now so I know my way around a sewing machine. I think I'm gonna start off just getting the monofin so I can learn to swim in it.
Nice to meet everyone though!

Hello, Kesra! I'm also a mermaid-in-training (just ordered 1st tail, waiting for it to come in!) AND a cosplayer AND I'm 30 AND I live in the mountains (other ones tho)! . . . Are we dopplegangers?! Err....dopplemers? O.o

Hi, I'm just getting started as well! It's funny I actually did the same thing and just bought the mono fin first to learn. I really want a silicone tail, but like you said those prices are scary, (especially for a college student such as myself.) I am in school learning about costume design and I definitely want to try and make a cool fabric tail. We should share ideas as we figure things out haha! Most of the fabric tails I've seen are pretty basic, but I think I could do something cool.

That sounds fun!
I have no formal training but I've been sewing for nearly twelve years. It seems as long as I know how to work with spandex, I should be fine! And my machine has an overlocking stitch so we'll see. My first tail is going to be extremely basic. Just a leg sleeve and something to go over my (extended) fluke. But I've been mulling over designs for my second and maybe third fabric tails. I've been looking at a lot of tropical fish references on google and I know for sure I want to go with warm colors. And I have an airbrush so I may see what I can do with that!
I'm pretty excited about it.

Hi Mermady and Kesra, welcome.
I've not been here long but are finding people are really nice and helpful. Looking forward to seeing what you make for your tails :). I love the creativity here.

Welcome! I wish you lots of luck with making a gorgeous fabric tail.
My advise is don't rush to finish a fabric tail. I was tempted into rushing to finish my fabric tail in a day because I wanted it right away. Next time I want to take my time! Recently Little Orca just finished an amazing fabric tail for another mermaid that took her a year or more to make! All of that time definitely paid off. I have seen some fabric tails that at first glance you would think were silicone.
