Hello! New Mermaid here!

Hi my name is Mady (short for Madyson.) Like many here I've always been drawn to the water and I was swimming before I could walk. When I was little I dreamed of being a mermaid and would swim with my ankles crossed and told my family stories about me being a mermaid. I also really wanted to train Shamu and dolphins, but I would have killed to be able to breath under water and have my own tail. As I got older I realized I could never truly live underwater, and settled for just being near it as much as I could.

Fast forward to about a year ago when I first heard about the growing "mermaiding" community. I fell in love and wanted a tail so bad, then I saw the usual prices and backed down, thinking, as a college student, it would be years before I could afford my own tail. I'm at school for entertainment design, (sets, lighting, and some costume) and in the back of my mind I always thought, "I bet I could make one." Again though the materials were expensive. Finally a few days ago I saw a post for a sale on fabric mermaid tails and mono fins and I decided to just do it. I bought a mono fin to start with and I've decided once I get the hang of it I'll get the fabric one, and work my way up to a full latex/silicone tail.

I hope to be able to eventually perform with this and perhaps, if I get good enough, start a business making tails. I can't wait.

I'd love any advice on getting started or if ya'll know any good (cheaper would be cool) retailers for tails or fabricating supplies that would be awesome.

Hi! I ended up getting the Finfun monofin. After the sale and a coupon I found it ended up being around $20 bucks so I figured that'd be good to learn in. 36201

a lot of the tail makers have been outlined here http://mernetwork.com/index/content.php?133-mermaid-tailmakers if that helps you find a premade one! It's been a while since I made my own so someone else may have more independent info but if you look online you may be able to find some fabric for relatively cheap depending on what you're after, or check the classifieds section I've seen some fabric tails pop up on there, even a few days ago I believe.
