OK, so I've spent the last 2 days trawling the forum for info and I'm about to order some neoprene. I have the choice of ivory or black, and I guess that'll be partly decided by what paints I use. I'm struggling to get hold of Lumiere here in the UK, so was thinking of buying the additive to turn normal acrylics into fabric paints.

Everywhere seems to say I need to heat treat it with an iron for several minutes or 40 mins in the dryer on high :0!! Obviously I'm terrified that'll ruin the tail. Do people usually do that? How do painted tails hold up if you don't?

The other thing I thought of was adding the non-heat treatment additive if I can get it..... but I don't know if that's compatible with the acrylic-to-fabric-paint thing.....

So many questions, sorry :/, I can see a bunch of people have asked similar questions, but can't really find an answer, so If anyone has tried any of these things PLEASE let me know before i spend a small fortune and a load of time on all the wrong stuff. I'm mermaiding at a dive show in a month and it'd be nice to have something ready for then. My old spandex tail is getting rather tired :(.

Pics to follow once I actually make some progress :). Thanks.

I'm trying the no heat fixer for a spandex tail.
http://www.dharmatrading.com/paints/versatex-inchno-heat-inch-fixative.html

Question: how tight are you making the neoprene tail? That is for a body part with a measurement of 30 inches, how much material are you using? For example, if you used 27 inches (13.5" between the seems), you would be building in 10% stretch. how much are you building in?

Edit: I've also found Sharpie permanent markers do not wash out. Nor do Prismacolor markers. http://www.dickblick.com/products/prismacolor-premier-double-ended-art-markers/

It's nice to see another painted neoprene tail journey starting up. They're really durable and is a great middle ground between fabric and silicone. :3

If it's possible to get in the UK I recommend folkart multi-surface acrylic paints! They're relatively cheap and have a lot of color variety if you don't want to custom blend paints for your own color. No need for the acrylic-to-fabric additive because it can work on fabric. Heat setting is really quick on a low temp and won't damage the neoprene. My signature has a link to my thread where I made my own tail and I put a lot of tips in my posts. With any luck I hope my tail making journey can help you out.

The dive show sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun :D

Merman Storm - Let me know how it goes! I love seeing the things people have made.

Interesting about the markers. I have some sharpies in a bunch of different colours. They may be really useful.

Also, I just found this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liquitex-Professional-Fabric-Effects-Medium/dp/B001US2NRO

No idea if anyone has tried it yet. It says it turns acryics into fabric paints and doesn't require heat setting :0. I've emailed the maunfacturer to ask if it will stick to synthetic fabrics as the neoprene i have found has spandex on both sides. Might be worth a try...??

As far as sizing goes i was planning on doing it the same as i did my spandex tail. I measured myself and sewed it to those measurements, then tried it on, found it was too big and took it in 'til it fitted haha. I'm not sure how to work out the stretch without actually having a play with the fabric, trying it on and re-pinning/marking. I'd also be scared of cutting it too small!

Many thanks for the advice Saoirse!

I just found a UK supplier of Folkart acrylics :D. It's a relief to hear that there are other options that have been shown to work. It gives me a lot more confidence to get started.

I'll go check out the thread now :). Exciting times!

I'll get photos up this weekend.

Once you do get it sized, can you measure the result, and figure out how much you had to take it in over your measurements? I've been really curious about this value.

I made my spandex tails the same way. I've found that once they fit me well, they are 15% to 20% smaller than my measurements. That is, where my measurement is 40", subtract 20% (8") to get the amount of fabric: 32", or 16" between the seems when the tail is laid out flat.

Great to hear you found a supplier! Just be sure that the paints you get specify "multi-surface" since folkart offers a lot of different paint types. Blending a small bit of the glitter or metallic paints into the multi-surface gives them a gorgeous finish.
Painting in thin layers is what I found works best for painting a neoprene tail. Watering them down a bit helps them seep deeper into the nylon on the neoprene to give it a better hold on the tail. If you have any other questions about how I made my tail that you can't find on my thread feel free to ask me! :mermaid kiss:

Ahh thank you so much for your kind words! uwu I'm glad I can help you on your journey.
If it's not too much to ask- do you have any concepts/inspiration for your tail? I really love seeing what sits behind a merfolk's mind when they design a tail. It's amazing to be able to see how creativity flows differently from person to person.

Following with interest! I'm going to be making a painted neoprene tail, too, at some point, and I'm planning on using Liquitex with the fabric additive because it's the artist quality paint brand that I've been using successfully on other difficult mediums for 20 years. No idea how it will translate to neoprene, but I will let everyone know.

I can't wait to hear more about your project and see pictures!

My paints and neoprene has arrived!! I decided to try out the SoSoft fabric paints as they do not need heat setting and were easily available. I've use Decoart brand acryics before for other crafts and they seemed good, so fingers crossed the fabric ones will be ok. I'll be doing a test soon.

That looks great! I'm painting a tail at the moment too - what type of paint are you using?
Edit: found it on the other page! How well do they hold up to any fabric stretch?

Weaslet
04-03-2016, 09:54 AM
They sink right into the fabric and bleed quite a bit if they are watered down even slightly, almost like dyes. I'm still waiting for them to dry completely, but I have given it a good stretch and it doesn't seem to change or crack anywhere. If I run into any problems once dry I will paint the actual tail with the neoprene stretched over a dummy. Seems promising though.

QUICK UPDATE: Ran into a few problems with the construction.....

Problem 1:
Sewing machine broke but has now been fixed. It goes through the neoprene like it's just normal fabric :D.

Problem 2:
Made a pattern, cut out the neoprene, stitched together the sides.... and it's waaaay too big. There are lots of wrinkles at the side seams :/. I've taken it in a bit but still needs quite a bit of adjustment! Particularly around the bum, ankles and fluke :S.

Problem 3:
My plan was to sew zips into the inside of the fluke to allow the monofin to be removed when it needs to be, but it looks like the stitching is going to show through pretty badly. Hope I can disguise it a bit with the paint job!

Problem 4:
As the fluke is much longer than the fin and the neoprene is pretty soft, it's going to dangle off it in a bit of a weird way when it's out of water. I've not found a decent way of stiffening it yet. Hopefully it'll look ok when it swims. Please, please, please!

I seems I have lots of learning to do! Much respect for all you tailmakers out there!

Hey all,

Photo update! :D It's now stitched together and fits ok (I think), and all the scales are blocked in. Starting on the fluke tomorrow!

Here's the mono and the cut neoprene.
36478

Starting to paint the nearly 1800 or so scales :0. It was at about this point I realised I have started something that is waaaay to ambitious to be finished in time for the dive show.
36481

Here's the front so far...
36479

and here's the back...
36480

The plan is to get it all looking reasonable in time for the show on the 23rd and 24th so I can swim test it in the tank. If the fluke is done in time I think it'll be ok. Extra bits, like highlights on the scales and the little fins I wanted to have on there will have to be added later on.

Still lots to do but pleased so far :). Hope you like.

Thank you all. Working on the fluke today; I've outlined the pattern on the back and just starting to colour it in. :D

I had to change my fluke design because I dropped the paintbrush onto the fabric and got paint where it shouldn't be and also got muck on it from my car boot that I couldn't wash out. Oops . I prefer the new design anyway though :).

They're DecoArt So Soft fabric paints. I've never used them before, but they don't need heat setting apparently. It says they're washable, but that first time I take it in the water I will be terrified! Fingers crossed.

Hey all. Quick question for any of you who have painted tails - I have been told that the chlorine in swimming pools may destroy the plastic in fabric paints and cause the paint to break down. Has anyone actually known this happen??

The tank I will be in this weekend is not chlorinated but the pool where the practice sessions are held is.

Help!

I got talked into pool testing my new tail last night. As suspected the paint was not dry enough to put in the water and some of it came off. I'm not too worried, I will touch it up again as needed.

A much bigger problem came in the form of the waist, which is apparently waaaaay too big. It appeared to fit dry, but stretched in the water and slipped down. Think builders crack, but with a mermaid. :S.
I put a weight belt on in the hope it would hold it in place, which it didn't. I don't know why I thought this would work, I always have trouble with keeping my belt in place anyway when I go freediving.

A bit disappointed about the paint but it's still a good job I tested it in advance of the show. I'm going to take it in a bit at the sides, but I'm trying to work out how to put a waistband on it now. I have found some elastic strip. Maybe just zig zag it to the inside and stretch it a bit as I sew? I've looked on the forum for some info on attaching waistbands to neoprene but not come up with anything, so if anyone has done this please let me know if there is anything I should or shouldn't do!

On the plus side it's good to swim in, no harder than the old tail, and it looks lovely.

I used 3 bottles of white, 2 1/2 of baby blue, 2 of turquoise, 1 1/2 or med blue and 1 each of silver, gold and lavender. I also used a bit of pink, yellow green, dark purple and christmas green but not a full bottle.

I massively over ordered paint (spent 85), but I'll use it on other projects so it won't go to waste.

One thing I did find out quite quick is that it goes thick and horrid super quick if open to the air. I poured a tiny bit into the lid at a time and used that to paint with, with some tape over the top of the bottle to keep it fresh. It seemed to work.

There's a thread somewhere that has pictures of one of Hannah's tails with the inner elastic band. I remember thinking it looked like a really smart way to construct the waist of a neoprene tail. I searched and can't find the thread! Maybe you'll have more luck or someone else can point you to it.

I've not done a neoprene tail yet, but I added elastic waistbands to fabric tails. A zig-zag stitch worked quite well, one at the top and one at the bottom of the elastic strip.
You could also consider neoprene glue, as that means no stitches show on the outside of your marvelous tail. You could also glue in, say, a three inch wide strip of neoprene to add a waistband.

Weaslet
04-21-2016, 02:55 PM
I think I'm going to try to stitch it straight to the fabric. It won't look as good as if I hid the stitching but I'm really short on time and materials. It has to be fixed for saturday morning.

I cut the waistline quite low as there is quite a big difference between my waist measurement and my ass :/. I was worried I'd not be able to get in and out of it if it was tight on the smallest part off my waist. Hopefully I didn't cut it too low, and the elastic will fix the issue.

Now I know that it happens I will bear it in mind for the next one. There will be more :).

Your work is beautiful!! Im sorry i don't have advice on putting in a waistband. I did one in my neoprene tail by putting a sleeve of another fabric on the inside and then inserting a drawstring, but i did it before painting. Also! If you are still having problems with the fluke flopping beyond the mono-fin: i made a craft foam "sleeve" that fills up my fluke and fits around my mono-fin. It holds up and water and is still soft but not a harsh drop-off after the mono-fin.
