echidna's monofin speed test

I did a timed test for all the different monofins I own (as well as without fins).
Thought I'd share the results.

from slowest to fastest:

-magictail fin (without the fabric cover)
-no fin
-Finis Training
-Hydra
-Finis Rapid, Competitor a tiny slice faster than Rapid (negligible)
-cheap Bifins pair no 1
-cheap Bifins pair no 2

All tests were done with underwater dolphin on one breath, respectively.
No push-off from the rim, but I made sure the "getting up to speed" wasn't weighing in heavily on the results.

I know what I'm using in the future!
Especially considering that the fastest fins are also the cheapest ones (can you believe it), AND the ones which give you the most mobility!
Not to mention that some of the monofins hurt your feet so much it's torture to wear them longer.

Edit:
we did a few timed tests with the same fins in tails.
Turns out that in flowy fabric tails with big flukes, monofins are suddenly noticeably faster than the same tail with bifins.
Another tail, with less fabric and a smaller, differently shaped fluke, bifins still come out faster than a tail with monofin :O

We still have many different combos to test, but I'd say there are so many factors influencing speed and drag- not only material, but shape and size of the fluke-,
that it's impossible to say which is fastest until you time it all.

You were dolphin kicking even with the bi-fins? Were they mounted together, essentially turning them into a monofin, as you would if using them in a tail?

Nope, regular bifins. I always swim with dolphinkick.

It's the exact same as with a monofin imo, I never understood why it's a problem for some without a monofin.

First, there are some bio-mechanical differences. Your feet may be farther apart, and they are not forced to move together. How much of a difference this makes will vary from swimmer to swimmer.
Next, if the bi-fins are used to make a monofin, the hydrodynamics are different. No flow can pass between the two bi-fins.

It would be interesting to see the speed difference between bi-fins separate, and bi-fins used to make a monofin. It would also be interesting to see what happens when a monofin made from bi-fins is put into a tail. A tail can have material to left and right of the fins, material that is not well supported and will tend to move with the flow. This could add drag while not giving any improvement to propulsion. In that case, would a wider regular monofin be better than bi-fins?

I would have to time this to know for certain, but I've swum both with monofin and (separate) bi-fins in the same tail, and it seemed like bi-fins were still faster in spite of the flowy material flopping all around them.

But I'm going to test it out eventually with different tails, now that I've done it with bare monofins already.
Planning a comparison between thin fabric, doubled fabric, and neoprene.
I'll leave out my heavy 3D scale tails, because I already know those are slower with the raised single scales xD

I'm confused. If the bi-fins were in a tail, how could they be separate? Does not the tail connect them to some degree? I would think the tail would prevent the water from flowing between them. It would also constrain the motion, so one sort of has to move as the other. What am I not seeing?

By separate I mean they weren't physically fused together.
I thought that's what you meant with "mounted together", maybe I misunderstood.

You can use bifins just like a monofin in a tail together, but you can still take them out separately.

Ever since I started this mermaid swimming 2 yrs ago, I cannot swim dolphin kick without the monofin! Ok, I CAN do half a stroke before I'm being pushed back to the surface because I'm too buoyant without a fin to force me through the water.

How often do you swim?
It took me about a year swimming ~10 hours per week to be able to do the finless dolphin effectively.

Once you can do this, you will be fast enough (and have enough muscle mass) that you won't float up as long as you stay in motion.

Me too! I find arms at sides easier. So having more muscle mass makes the dolphin kick with monofin easier? I have long bladed rubber flippers (bifins), I might try it out one day. But then I'd be tempted to make a tail for it too because leg swimming is so boring.

I have trouble stretching my arms that far when I'm swimming on my back. When I do dolphin kick backwards, I rest my hands on my thighs with fingers open. Hands splayed so there is little water resistance. I prefer arms by side and making a more curvy type of undulation. Maybe I just need more than once a week practice to get that body mass!

During our testing we found we swam faster with arms out- there's just a technique to it. And faster with monofins. I find bi fins are often too long/flexible even the harder ones.

I think it'll be interested to compare our published data with yours. We've done loads of sessions now and seem to be getting quite different results from you, though ours have been consistent for the most part give or take the different variables we're testing.

Monofins are designed for dolphin kicking--can't kick any other way with them. One can dolphin kick with bi-fins--I do it all the time. But there is always the gap between the two fins that is lacking with monofins. So simple logic (and it's not always on the mark) would seem to indicate that one can get more thrust per kick with a monofin over that with bi-fins. Bi-fins do have an advantage, however. They allow you to vary your workouts and avoid repetitive stress--in addition to dolphin kicking, you can also do scissors kicking and flutter kicking. This can be an important consideration is one has lower back-pain problems to contend with.

alright, so we tested this today.

I only have one comparison pair so far, which was done with the same tail, a long, flowy big-fluked fabric one.
Using a pair of bifins in it, a lap took me roughly 38 seconds on average (fins without tail: 17-18 seconds).
Using a monofin in the tail (Finis Rapid), it took about 28-29 seconds.

Without a tail, the pair of bifins is about the same speed as the Rapid, but as soon as a tail is on, the Rapid was much more effective, namely almost 10 seconds faster in one lap.

Monofin + tail was also a slice faster than if I swim without fins and tail (despite the drag).
If we hadn't timed it, it probably wouldn't have been noticeable.
Again, this was with a flowy, big-fluked tail with a lot of fabric.

Edit:
and today, we did another tail with bifins in.
This tail was tighter and with a smaller, differently shaped fluke and, lo and behold, it was faster than the tail with monofin.

So there doesn't seem to be a rule of thumb, it always comes down to circumstances which combo is faster.
I still want to test a tail with the competitor in, a neoprene tail, and the snake tails.

Note also that all speed results are practically sprints.
If one would slowly but steadily swim 500m instead, a big monofin might just come out even or maybe even faster than bifins.
I just don't know until I can try it out in summer.
