Yet another tail ban, but a real chance for change PLZ READ

Hi fish folks! We are bringing you... yet another tail ban with a petition to sign! But before you get all angry we want to tell you why this one is a little different! This petition is in regards to Canada where the governing body that makes country wide decisions about safety for swimming- The Life Saving Society- are gathering information to help them make a formal statement about the use of mermaid tails. They are VERY OPEN to the idea and are looking at these petitions, and even working with ... ME... to learn more about mermaid swimming and safety. They are willing to listen to reason! These pools are eagerly awaiting the decision of the life saving society as it may overturn some of these bans. So please, support this petition for a series of pools in BC to reconsider their ban. Post FACTS. Post professionally. Post from a place of information and kindness. You can comment on the actual news article, and at the bottom you'll see a link to the petition. I would still say it does. We are playing the long game here; A ban in Canada could set a precedent for one in the US. While unlikely, never underestimate the government's potential for taking away the people's rights and fun.

Agreed. I already have a ban at the local park pool. What I was worried about is the Life Saving Society would say "It matters that you live in the US and not Canada because you do not pay Canadian taxes, and do not use our facilities. Thus, your signature irrelevant".

Australia being the way it is atm with tail bans, they've relied too much on what is happening in the States and elsewhere. People don't realise we are a separate country, we don't need the rules of overseas bans to influence our rules. But hey, fear mongering and media scares is whats winning atm.

I'm glad the pools there are willing to do proper research/due diligence on this issue rather than just accepting the knee jerk over reaction from the public thanks to that video which shall not be named. I think it's far better they are willing to consult mermaid experts such as you Raina rather than just assume that tail swimming must be unsafe because it binds your legs together.

Like you say if we can turn the tide with one group of pools it can help to have a ripple effect elsehwere. I wish you and this petition all the luck, because we have so far had no successes with any petition raised here in Australia.

So glad I found this again. Since a mermaid showed up in the pool a couple years ago, I've inspired some aspiring mers. Before too long, I expect mine won't be the only tail. It's good to have these guidelines to pass along to pool staff and management. I firmly believe in education and awareness over fear and ostrazation.

Thats so disappointing to hear. I had high hopes that this petition would go ahead, it's a shame it was stopped in its tracks by one man posting inappropriate comments. Why don't you take ownership of sending the petition Raina? You could also send them some of the other material you have written on why bans are not the solution.

As you mentioned in your original post, if things can change in Canada then maybe it can help to influence decision making in other parts of the world where the bans are in place.

I can't. it;s outside my jurisdiction it's literally the other side of the country. It really doesn't make sense for me to. It's ok for loads of people to sign it but you need to live in the municipality to deliver it. There are *other* Canadian merfolk though. Maybe you'll find someone around who lives in that area.

And also, I do a huge amount of work for fighting tail bans but I can't fight the whole dang country. It's kinda unfair to put that on me. I do more than pretty much most people in the community and I provide loads of free resources and I already gave that mom everything I can. I can't just go around arguing with every pool that bans tails. Canada is the second biggest country in the world... other people need to start stepping up if they want things to change and not rely on other to do the work.
