A friend just shared an article (http://www.newsarama.com/28686-comic-convention-on-a-cruise-ship.html) announcing that Wizard World is planning a comic con ON A CRUISE! And my very first thought was - We need a mercon on a cruise!! So, someone make this happen. :rainbow:

While fun, cruise ships are one of the worst offenders in air pollution.
The stuff they use is forbidden and illegal everywhere else, and one day of cruising is about as harmful as one year of normal car traffic in a city.
(It could be even more extreme, just look up that extra heavy oil they use, it's terrible.)

It would be nice to have other Mers in the water during snorkeling excursions.

OMG that would be so much fun! Imagine the mer pics we could all get if you travel somewhere tropical.
We could all stop off and take awesome underwater pictures have super fancy dinner and all have an awesome time running the ship lol.
Who's our event coordinator?!

There are plenty of sailing vessels listed for liveaboard excursions in the Bahamas HERE (http://www.scubadiving.com/travel/caribbean-atlantic/bahamas-liveaboards). Sounds like fun!

Oasis Of the Seas has a production of Cats going on. Not that anyone would be interested… even has the original Rum Tum Tugger, not street cat. I know I mentioned that to Arion when he saw it lol.

I second this. As mermaids we need to stand up for the sea!
I love the tropics and boats but I've never had the desire for a big cruise ship. Just seems like a cheesy fake type of experience when there's soooo much more you can do/see/explore when you're not with a giant floating city. If you think pool bans are bad, I'm pretty sure a monster cruise ship is going to be pretty restricting as far as taking tails in open ocean (just comes with the nature of big corporations). Not to rain on the parade, but I'd highly recommend a cat or sailboat cruise tho! Or even just a mer-met up in the keys, hawaii or somewhere tropical with boating day trips.
Yes yes yes! This needs to happen :D

my old school rents a yacht for prom every year and there's usually at least a hundred going, maybe something like that could be accomplished?

try not to take it so negatively people who are against it. you clearly know this is just a thread where people are daydreaming. Like dozens of others on the site (owning an Island, anyone?)
I mean, you know tail making (even fabric, even recycled/upcycled materials) is one of the most wasteful and pollutant of hobbies, right?

Raina has a point. For example; silicone and fabric, or the materials to make them, almost certainly were shipped on a freighter. They use the same fuel.
I have taken a "The two Tails" tail on a cruise. I spent hours in the pool while wearing the tail, and the cruise personnel never said a word. I also took it on three shore excursions that involved swimming. One, the stingray encounter, did not allow fins of any sort. The other two, snorkeling excursions, never said a word. All the excursions were run by local companies, not the cruise line. (Although they have it all set up so you can book them through the cruise company.) This was Princess cruises.
I see nothing stopping a bunch of Mers from all booking the same cruise and the same shore excursions, essentially making a Mercruise. Just accept you will be sharing the ship with 3000 other people who don't know whats going on.

How about renting a private island (https://www.rentmyisland.com/vacation-rentals/37) near the Underwater Music Festival (http://www.fla-keys.com/news/news.cfm?sid=8931)?

Omg an underwater music festival!?!? Now that's what I'm talking about! And it's to promote Eco ocean awareness. I need to be at that! (But July is a hard time for me to get away as our band performs nearly every weekend in NY during the summer...)

I would be into this just for the Rum Tum Tugger. . .he's like a feline Steven Tyler and he should be played by Tim Curry. . .

Suddenly my life seems so small. . ."underwater music festival" . . .I'm so glad this is a thing.
Actually I would love to participate in something like this as I think it would really help me in overcoming my thelasophobia. I've been making good progress with my own exposure therapy and would love to be able to swim with other mers in the ocean. . . although I'm certain there are meet-ups right here in California, I've just never looked :p Still, a tropical location would be much different.

In all seriousness, I think a sailing cruise is a fantastic idea. I myself have never been interested in huge cruise liners that are basically just giant floating hotels, because it seems like it would take away the experience of actually being at sea. My personal opinion, but I'm guessing I'm not alone here.
When I was 12, my parents and grandparents took my sister and me on a cruise of the Greek isles of the Aegean on a Star Clipper ship: http://www.starclippers.com/us-dom
It was one of the most magical experiences of my life. The ship is big enough to be comfortable, yet small enough that you definitely feel the experience of being at sea on a tall ship. There were even two swimming pools on the deck of the ship! They were small, but big enough to swim around and have fun in, and one of them actually had windows in the sides and bottom that looked down into the dining room. My sister and I swam in there every day and my mom would take pictures of us from below and it was great fun. Also, instead of chemically treating the water, they just pumped in fresh seawater every morning, then drained it again at night. So you were literally just swimming in seawater. (I'm guessing they probably filtered it a little but I don't remember the details).
I have no idea how the prices compare to other cruise prices, as I've never really done much research in that direction, but it might be possible to get a volume discount rate if a bunch of mers all booked at the same time....no idea really, but I think it would be worth looking into. I would love to go on one of these ships again someday.

Expect to spend twice as much to go on a sailing cruise over a "floating hotel". You will be paying about a silicone tail per person (7 day cruise).
As for not feeling you are at sea, I assumed for the pricing of the cruise ship you would at least get a balcony room. You cannot get that on sailing cruises. (That is, a balcony room on a cruise ship is half the cost of a sailing ship room with a porthole.) It's nice getting up in the morning and going out on your balcony to see the ocean go by. Its also a good place to put your tail while its drying. But, if you are planning on not spending much time in your room, the balcony becomes less relevant. (Then again, if you stuff 4 people into an interior cabin on a cruise ship, the cost is a quarter that of the sailing cruise).
Also, if you or a travel companion are prone to sea sickness, its nice that that huge moving building barely rocks. It is much more of a hotel with changing scenery and locations than a ship at sea.
There are advantages both ways. Just don't get trapped into "It has to be a sailing ship, but they are too expansive, so lets not do it at all," because then we don't do it at all.

Yeah...okay....I never said anything about "it's too expensive, so let's not do it at all". My point was that it's not cheap but it's worth saving up for. I also stated that it was my personal opinion, which I don't expect everyone to share but I suspect that some here might. I'd happily pay twice as much to go on a sailing over a floating hotel because I don't think floating hotels are fun. I don't think big hotels are fun at all. I've never liked staying in them, whether or not they're floating. As for sailing ships, I've always loved everything about them and I'll take any opportunity I can get to get out and experience the open ocean. I happen to like the feel of the rolling waves, and I'm not prone to seasickness at all. And I find the journey to be at least as exhilarating as the destinations (if I want a hotel and a change of destinations, I'll just go on a road trip or something). For ME, being on a floating hotel that doesn't feel like it's moving completely defeats the purpose of going to sea in the first place. Not everyone will agree with me and that's fine, but some people will agree with me and that's also fine. That's why it was a suggestion that I explained was based on my own personal preferences and experience -___-

Barebones charters are also a thing, though you would need somebody who knows how to sail.

I think Merman Storm was just saying don't anyone decide to rule out the more affordable option if that's the only way it would be possible. It didn't seem like he was trying to pick a fight or put anyone down.

Got some friends at Royal Caribbeans. They claim that any activity that can attract over 2000 participants can, hypothetically, rent a cruiser for no longer than 7 days. It's also expensive, but hey, im just saying, IT'S POSSIBLE!!!

https://www.zerve.com/InlandSeas <<< Pirate Ship!!! ;)
I mean... it might be a bit cold... sailing the lakes and all, but at least we would have a big enough space to lounge, and wouldn't have to worry about the pollution aspect as much. Plus, like... again... pirate ship...!!!! Yum!! <3 <3 <3
Heheheeh! But, seriously, I like this whole idea of holding a convention on a ship. Very cool!
