Hi everyone, I'm messing around with designs for a few tails, and this one is giving me a little trouble. The only fabric I could find with the pattern I wanted was a bright rainbow color (which is fine, I'm totally okay with being a Lisa Frank mermaid).
See, before I went looking at fabric, I was going to base this one off of a sea turtle, so now that I'm having to go with unnatural colors, I need some suggestions to make the whole thing look decent.

First of all, should I make the colored pattern on both sides of the tail, or keep the white underside to keep with the patterns on an actual sea turtle? Second, what color should I make the shell? Should it be colored at all, or just stay white to contrast with the tail?
Thanks for helping!

I'd be really careful with white. It tends to show through in water and loves to show off curves (even the ones you don't want Dx) I think the shell would be really cool if it were more natural looking if you color both sides of the tail. If you decided to do one side, I think a white shell would also be cool. That's just me though, and this is your tail, so have fun! :-)

Yeah I wouldn't suggest white for a fabric tail, once white fabric gets wet it's basically see through film. Unless you're using a thicker fabric like neoprene, ppl will be able to see your swim bottoms or whatever you have under the tail .

I'm not too worried about the white showing through, as I'm going to be using performance fabric for swimsuits, and a lining inside. I'm mostly considering from an aesthetic point of view.

Nope. Not for me, I have a tail that's got white background with green and blue flowers. But then again I make my own swimwear, and line it with a very dark color so nothing is see through!

I discussed it with some friends, and this is the final design.

I hope it doesn't look terrible. QvQ
