I just have a couple questions. :)

What makes you a professional mermaid? Is there a common standard that makes you an official one?

Are there any mermaid professional groups that do events and are looking for another member? I have done several events and modeling shoots and I would love to be apart of a mermaid group. My first silicone tail is coming in a month.

Also, this is a strange question, but is there a cast system in the Mer community? I sometimes feel like since I'm starting off my mermaid career that other mermaids don't want to speak with me. I've also heard about how drama is started in the Mer community because of things like this. :( I hope that's not true but I always wanted to ask as I always just want to be friends with everyone :)

I just really want guidance in the Mer community and want to start off my mermaid career the right way.

Thank you for those who respond! :)

Well, getting paid for being a mermaid can technically make you a pro mermaid! LOL! But I know what you mean...Mermaid Raina has written a couple of very good books on being a pro mermaid, you should look into getting them. I find them very helpful and they are great resources. But, there is no standard or certification to becoming a professional mermaid.

There is no real caste system as far as mermaids go, but as with any community, the drama is sure to follow. Just rise above and know that those who would oppress you are simply insecure.

Good luck in your future endeavors! Who is making your silicone tail?

Also, you should go and start a new topic in the Introduce Yourself thread and tell us about yourself. Your profile has virtually no info.

the general consensus is you are a pro mermaid if you make money with it.

There are different ways to do so, but I'd say if you earn your income by doing something mermaid-related and while being dressed as a mermaid, that should qualify :D

As for groups, you can always check in your pod or ask around among the mers near you.
If there is nothing, you can also start your own!

I'm not sure what you mean with "cast system", but if you mean that no one replied to questions, that's usually the case because there is all info already available on the forum.

EDIT: wow lol, Pearlie you type fast! 3 replies while I was derping at the keyboard :rotfl:

I find the mermaids here to be really friendly and supportive! Forums can sometimes seem intimidating bc it's all text based, where as if we were face to face I'm sure the same words written would come off as much friendlier/supportive/cordial spoken. As long as you're asking the right questions, and by "right" I mean doing lots and lots of research and then when you really can't find the answer or have something more specific, then you ask the community. I did 2 months of intense research reading lots of threads and watching the videos I could find, then I PM'd a couple of specific questions to more established tailmakers (PearlieMae and Theobromine) and they were very kind, helpful and quick with their responses.

I wouldn't call it a cast system, bc a cast system means you are born into it and there is no chance for upward movement. In mermaiding everyone starts from zero and moves up, and what level you get to depends on the amount of time, resources, passion and discipline you put into it. Levels might include, newbie, enthusiast, hobbyist, model, performer, accessory maker, tailmaker, social media influencer, part-time pro, full time pro, celebrity...and any combo of the above. It depends on where your interests/skills/talents lie and what you invest in. Many of the "celebrity" mermaids no doubt get there with the help of their model like looks, which maybe the "cast" (born with) part, but it's the same as any performance based profession in the world...

It's like playing guitar...some take it up as a passing fling, some love to play for just their own enjoyment (nothing wrong with that, hobbies are healthy!), some have rock star aspirations but not enough discipline/motivation/talent, some have the drive, persistence and enough natural talent to be professional part or full time, and a very very few become rock stars (and every rock star I've talked to seems to chalk it up to luck... Which I like to defined as "being prepared for the opportunity.")

So prepare yourself for opportunities and when the come be ready to take advantage of them! Not everyone has the desire or is the personality type to sacrifice the security of their "day job" when an opportunity arises, but if you want to exchange a day job for a day dream then go for it!
