View Full Version : Let's share: Mermaid Artwork

MerMaiden Lissa

I was looking for a thread for sharing our Mer related artwork, but I couldn't find a thread specifically for that. Anyone want to share? I'm in the mood to draw so hopefully I will have some pics of my artwork to post soon. Anyone else feel like sharing? Anyone do any sculptures, or paintings? Even other sea life art would be cool to see.

p.s. Sorry if this thread is in the wrong place.

Thank you :) I didn't leave room for his other arm (doodling in pen) so I decided he would have an amputated arm - like maybe he wrestled a shark away from an injured baby dolphin! Aywho, disabled mers need representation too! :)

Oh, I just figured his arm was bent in a way that it disappeared into the silhouette. I like the wrestling a shark to save a dolphin!

Nice work, MerPixie! I love the silhouette look!

Here's one of mine. I drew this mer a looooong time ago, before I even knew about mermaiding. I never finished her though!

I think she needs a name... any ideas???

(P.S.) I tried to change the size a third time, to make it not so big... but I fail at internet... I can delete it, if it is too big!

Her hair reminds me of sea kelp, so I looked up it's scientific name which is Macrocystis pyrifera. So how about call her Pyrifera?

So, I've had this idea in my head for a few days, but it's not quite how I pictured it. I need to work on my depth of field and my shading/blending. I decided to finish it anyway even though it wasn't turning out right.

Thank you!
I've thought about having a tail like that. I might just have to own more than one tail because I can't make up my mind! I want a brown and green leafy sea dragon type tail, and a pink tail, and then I've been wanting a tail that is inspired by a native fish. Deciding on tail styles is hard!

Thanks Pearlie Mae! I do follow Lora Zombie's work on Instagram. It's such a cool style.

And Lissa - it depends how I'm feeling. I can and will sketch completely in pen but sometimes I'll do an undersketch in coloured pencil (Prismacolor Col-erase).
Some days absolutely nothing will work and I feel like I can't draw so I know the feeling! I also prefer drawing faces to full body drawings though I have been doing a fair few for commissions these days.

I a fiber artist, and the other day while my hubby took the kids to the store I whipped this up. The felt body is cormo wool I processed from raw fiber into a batt, dyed, and felted and had laying around. I took ultra fine merino wool I had dyed in a pastel dyer's wheel (it makes the cutest baby yarn when spiraled with my glow in the dark string, I call it Glow Baby Glow), and I needel felted it on. I used a soy silk for the aqua spots, and then quilted the whole thing with the glow thread.
When I just need a quiet minute, I send my hubby and the kids to the store. I don't know how, but it always seems to take hours! But they have fun, so it's a win/win

Yes  When I was drawing him, he was facing the viewer (y'know, in my head), but one of the things I love about silhouettes is that so much can be left up to the viewer. Now, I actually like to think he might be facing away from the viewer, like he's guarding you.

Some more meeting doodles. I've been considering getting a mermaid tattoo along the inside of my arm and had been thinking of a figure 8, but at the end of the meeting started sketching out that bottom one doing a flip that I really like too. No doubt more doodles to come in the near future. :)

Forgot to share some of my recent ones! I drew a mermaid and turned her into a bright tropical fish with watercolours!

Hey, if anyone of yous decide to collaborate and make a coloring book for adults, I'll be your first customer!

i went to art school many eons ago, and never could draw the human form! I did perfectly well with everything except faces... blergh! So most of my drawings never had heads, let alone a face.

I just finished a piece of mermaid artwork that i think is worthy of showing here :3

I was inspired by Lunette's butterfly tail. If butterfly mermaids, why not moths? In my design though their wings act as both propulsion and stabilization, opening up when resting and tucking back for streamline purposes when swimming.

Mia - that looks awesome! I love the way the flukes open and close depending on whether they're swimming or stationary. Gorgeous work. ❤️

37133 A drawing I did a while back. I achieved the watercolour affect by dipping various pencils in water, I couldn't be more happy with the result! Inspired by a picture of a model underwater that I found online.

What an interesting concept! I wonder if a little innovation could make this a reality? I have at least three tails in the queue based on butterfly/moth wings! :thinks:

If you make the mobile wings i would LOVE to see. I was thinking a ball joint mechanism somehow attached to the monofin but I'm worried about bulk

Pearlie - that would be so incredible!!

A few random ideas that may or may not be helpful:

You could have a lightweight spring loaded mechanism in the forewings that would hold them open. Make the top edge of the fins concave so that when moving forward in the water, it would catch the water and push the fins back.

A jointed mechanism linked to a pulley system so the wings would open when your toes are pointed down and close as you dorsiflex your ankles (lift your toes up). This would make for more of an open/close flapping movement when swimming rather than staying down and streamline, but it would look pretty!

A similar mechanism to above, but with a dial/switch/lever that you could press on and operate with your feet or toes. This would be a bit more tricky, but would give more control and has the potential to look more 'real'.

An easier option, although not as spectacular, would be to make the fluke similar to Jaime the mermaid's finfolk tail. Make the hind wings large and stiff, and the forewings thin and flowy so they'll be pushed back when swimming.

I was thinking a long sliver of pool noodle inside the edge of the large wing that would make it spring out/expand at rest, but the force of the water while swimming would force it back. It wouldn't add too much buoyancy in the big scheme of things, and wouldn't require mechanical means.

It would be just for effect. No real function.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy! I try not to overthink.

That definitely sounds like a much easier option! It should look stunning - I really hope you give it a try!

It might add a little drag, but would undulate while swimming (because it wouldn't be attached to a stiff fluke) and could be very pretty.

Hmmm....like I don't have enough projects going!

Lol! That's what you get for trying to wriggle out of tail making - you know you'll never escape! It'll always be there to haunt you... [emoji23]

Seriously, that would look amazing. I could see the buoyancy of the noodle helping to make it sort of float out when stationary, if that makes sense...

I'm gonna stop now, as I realise we're kinda derailing the thread... But yeah, I would love to see that! ❤️

I am kinda planning my first silicone tail around a luna moth idea... So i might just have to try the pool noodle thing XD.
And yeah, back to the artwork :3
