My second favorite mermaid book is "Mermaid and Other Water Spirit Tales from Around the World" - Compiled by Sur La Lune Fairy Tales.
http://www.amazon.com/Mermaid-Other-Spirit-Around-Surlalune/dp/1463565542/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1460683942&sr=1-1&keywords=Mermaid+and+other+water+
Here is a copy of a review I wrote for Amazon:
This encyclopedic tome compiles folktales, sightings, legends and lore into a definitive compendium of all things related to merfolk and their kin. As the author says in her introduction, she has gathered together scholarly accounts, written articles, tales and ballads from around the world that relate to mermaids and other water spirits.
In this book you will find historic letters and sworn statements from witnesses, captive mermaids put on display, manufactured mermaids, soul stealers, vengeful mermaids, lovesick mermaids, underwater kingdoms, mermaid brides, misidentifications - possibly any story related to a mermaid ever recorded.
There are folktales and ballads from around the world, primarily Europe and Scandinavia. The book includes tales that were probably all but forgotten along with well known tales by Andersen and Wilde.
This book is fascinating and informative without straying into new age territory, it is just the mermaid book I had been looking for. (I like this book so much, I also bought the Kindle edition which is much easier to take when traveling than an 828 page book.)
My favorite mermaid book is a bit harder to find. It took me years to track down a copy.
"Sea Enchantress: The Tale of the Mermaid and Her Kin" by Gwen Banwell and Arthur Waugh.

I would love to hear from others about their favorite mermaid reads!
