My second favorite mermaid book is "Mermaid and Other Water Spirit Tales from Around the World" - Compiled by Sur La Lune Fairy Tales.

http://www.amazon.com/Mermaid-Other-Spirit-Around-Surlalune/dp/1463565542/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1460683942&sr=1-1&keywords=Mermaid+and+other+water+

Here is a copy of a review I wrote for Amazon:

This encyclopedic tome compiles folktales, sightings, legends and lore into a definitive compendium of all things related to merfolk and their kin. As the author says in her introduction, she has gathered together scholarly accounts, written articles, tales and ballads from around the world that relate to mermaids and other water spirits.

In this book you will find historic letters and sworn statements from witnesses, captive mermaids put on display, manufactured mermaids, soul stealers, vengeful mermaids, lovesick mermaids, underwater kingdoms, mermaid brides, misidentifications - possibly any story related to a mermaid ever recorded.

There are folktales and ballads from around the world, primarily Europe and Scandinavia. The book includes tales that were probably all but forgotten along with well known tales by Andersen and Wilde.

This book is fascinating and informative without straying into new age territory, it is just the mermaid book I had been looking for. (I like this book so much, I also bought the Kindle edition which is much easier to take when traveling than an 828 page book.)

My favorite mermaid book is a bit harder to find. It took me years to track down a copy.

"Sea Enchantress: The Tale of the Mermaid and Her Kin" by Gwen Banwell and Arthur Waugh.

I would love to hear from others about their favorite mermaid reads!

Only mermaid books I've read so far, is the Daughters of the Sea series. There's only 3 books in it, I've read Hannah and am still searching locally for, Lucy and another one, I can't remember the title.

And there's another one of a different series, that has a teenage girl, she goes swimming and gets captured by a merman, and they try to get the uprising going in the underwater city.

Yea, I read teen books because adult books don't have merfolk in them!

The Ingo series by Helen Dunmore is really good.

My favorites are the fins series by Tara Lynn Childs ( first one is Forgive My Fins) and How to be a Mermaid by Erin Hayes (this one is a novella from a larger collection so its kinda short but a cute story nonetheless.

Thank you for the recommendations everyone! I just thought I would mention one of my favorite mermaid and MERMAN stories -- "Salt Wine" by Peter S. Beagle (of Last Unicorn fame.)

If you like your mermaids evil (or I should say amoral) then you might like "Waking the Merrow" by new author Heather Rigney. Really interesting and somewhat prickly protagonist.

Oh, and I forgot to mention a great graphic novel! "Sailor Twain - The Mermaid on the Hudson" by Mark Siegel.

If you want to know of a place that has a long list of books with merfolk in them, have you checked out "The Merblog?"

Thank you! I hadn't heard of the Merblog. I really enjoyed my visit. It looks like a lot of good book reviews.

I'm on the third and final book in the Fins series by Tera Lynn Childs and have really enjoyed them. I'll be sad to finish the series. Ill be going on a week long cruise in a week so I have three books put aside for beach/pool side reading. The first and second books are from the WaterFire Saga Series by Jennifer Donnelly and I cant wait to start those. The other book is "Mermaid" by Carolyn Turgeon, which has amazing reviews.

I haven't been able to find very many, so thanks for the suggestions! I personally love The Tail of Emily Windsnap. Great bathtub read...especially in a tail!

There is also a pretty new compilation "Mermaids and Other Mysteries of the Deep" edited by Paula Guran. I really enjoyed it, and it has the best Selkie story I have ever read.
