So the two loves of my life are costumes and music, and I'm trying to increase my repertoire of songs to sing while in a mermaid costume. My voice ranges from low soprano to high alto, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for songs to learn the lyrics to.
I'm also learning how to play the acoustic guitar, and will soon start learning how to play a 12-hole ocarina, so instrumentals are awesome too.
Thanks in advance!

I love musics as well, maybe I could try to find something. What kind of music exactly you like? And what kind of lyrics you think it would be better? (something about love? or maybe something about strength? )
well... IDK if you like musicals but here are a few songs that I love and find beautiful:
* Ring of Keys - fun home (a cute song about the first crush of a little girls life);
* Helpless - Hamilton (another love song.)
* Waiting for life - Once on this island (upbeat cute song)
* I'm Alive - Next to Normal (I love ntn and is all thanks to this song that introduced me to this musical.)
* Seasons of love - Rent (this song is :'( so :'( fantastic)
* Waving through life - Dear Evan Hansen (this song is my current obsession. It's beautiful, deep and sad at the same time. The musical is about a boy with social anxiety and maybe that's why this song makes me so emotional. it's a song about not being acknowledged by the others, feeling like you're not even there. Seriously tho, I'm so in love with this song and if you never listened to it, please do yourself a favor and listen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8OwadQmJ88 )
* I'm not that girl - Wicked (about not being loved by the person you love)
* Who I'd be - Shrek the musical ("if I could choose, I would be anything else than being the monster I am" something like that)
I'll stop for now because I really don't know what kind of songs you like. But if you ever need more, I'll gladly help :)

Nice! Those are my loves as well and it would be so awesome to combine them! I sing in my boyfriends band and he even suggested that maybe there can be the right show for me to sing in my tail! Our music is original but very ocean and beach inspired (this song is The Ocean https://soundcloud.com/danbaileytribe/dan-bailey-the-ocean), so it could be a fun fit for the right gig. We also have a concept for an under water music video that involves mermaids too!
What songs do you currently sing? Where do you sing/perform? Well first thing that comes to mind is songs from The Little Mermaid of course! My friend's band in key west covers Under The Sea and all the girls go wild for it haha! Part of Your World is an awesome number for sure.
Beyond the obvious, I've always love the song Underwater Love by the Brazilian Girls: http://youtu.be/aUz3fLncTTs
I could totally see a cool acoustic guitar version of this song, and singing the Portuguese parts would be so pretty! (And the guitar seems pretty simple so would prob be easy to learn!). Michel Ghondry did an amazing Levi's commercial w this song with mermaids! (Too sexy for the US so it was only allowed to air in Europe http://youtu.be/RfMllGFW2lY)

"Beyond the sea" is a great one :) same with "fly me to the moon" if you love jazz. I love the bossanova version of fly me to the moon by Olivia Ong.
There's a music thread in here that you might like to check out if you want to cover any songs! It's quite an extensive list and includes metal, opera, electronica, musicals ... Etcetera.

My Jolly Sailor Bold is my personal favorite. I have a similar range so I'm sure you can handle it.

My tastes are pretty ridiculously varied, but I love soundtracks and parody rewrites in particular. As for genres, I tend to gravitate towards rock, metal (*cough*Alestormftw*cough*), jazz (but I usually just listen to instrumentals), and well, nearly anything besides post-2000 country or pop.
As for the types of music I'm looking for, I'm hoping for more songs that are nautical-themed with smooth vocals that won't stress my voice out too much.

Same here, I'm looking for something I can sing if asked that won't get me into trouble (copyrights and whatnot). I love "no ordinary girl" by Indiana Evans and you should check out the video for "Master of Tides" by Lindsey Stirling! She is a violinist so no vocals there, but her live surprise performance was totally epic. It gets me in my mer mood instantly!

Indiana actually has a whole album from Season Three! It's on iTunes. I have a couple of the songs. You should totally check it out! They're all the ones she sang in the series!
