Hey guys, nice to meet you. My name is Dorothy and I'm a fashion student from Brazil. (already apologize for my english as it's not my first language) I love musicals and I absolutely LOVE to draw!! I have a personal tumblr and sometimes I post my art there if anyone's interessed (http://dorothywonderland.tumblr.com/tagged/my+art)

I'm not really a mermaid, hope that's okay lol, even tho I love mermaids I have this huge phobia with anything bigger than a bathtub(also some pictures underwater freak me out too. Not the ones with mermaids or pretty fish, but those from deeper parts of the ocean.). So instead of being a mermaid I'm more of an admirer. But despite not being a mermaid, I'm a cosplayer and have some projects in which I'll dress up in full mermaid costumes <3

I've known about professional mermaids for about a year, I guess?? while surfing on the internet. I don't remember exactly where, I think it was on tumblr with a lionfish tail gif that got famous around there, it was really pretty and I fell in love instantly. after some time, I found this forum around and been lurking here ever since
After lots of research about mermaids I got so hyped that I decided "I want my final thesis to be about this!". To be more specific, I'll be creating a whole collection of mermaid tails and tops inspired by brazilian folklore and animals(tho I'll only have to actually make one of them, because I would never be able to make over 15 tails and tops in so little time :p )
Actually, one of the reasons I've registered here is because I'll need some help with interviews for my final thesis. I feel a bit guilty and didn't want to jump asking those interviews without even introducing myself first. so here I am :D
So yeah, I don't think I'll be able to contribute a lot, but I'll try my best to be less of a lurker around here :p

Oí Dorothy! You can be a land mermaid, tudo bem! And maybe as you "dive in" to the mermaid world you will eventually get more comfortable with water, who knows? Where in Brazil? I love it there and have been a couple times. Your character illustrations are fantastic! Can't wait to see your mermaid inspired drawings!

Oh the problem is that I also have social anxiety, so I don't see much what I could do as a mermaid. But idk if this counts, but I have a few cosplay projects that I'll go dressed as mermaid!!
Thank you <3 I'll be making a specific thread about it later, the lack of academic material and published books and articles about professional mermaiding and/or mermaid tails/tops is making my research really hard. (I bought the fishy business book by raina mermaid tho, it's what been helping the most <3)

Thanks, I always get concerned about my english tho. I'm glad it's okay <3
also thanks!! there's a few brazilian myths about the waters that I love. The ones I'm mainly using are:
The boto-cor-de-rosa(about the amazon river dolphin that turns into an attractive male at night and go to the land to flirt with women).
The mermaid Iara (a beautiful and strong native woman from amazonia who was thrown on a river to drown by her own father, but the animals took pity on her and turned her into a mermaid. sometimes she's white-washed what pisses me off).
And the last one is about another native, a pretty virgin that wanted to become a star (it was said that the goddess of the moon, Jaci, would kiss the face of the prettiest virgins to turn them into stars) so one night while drinking water from a river, she saw the reflection of the moon and jumped to try to reach Jaci, but ended up drowing and dying. Jaci took pity on her and turned her into a different kind of star: A water star (the Vitória Regia, is a plant with a pretty white/pink flower that resembles a star)
The las one is my fave <3 Also thanks, I'll need to interview a few mermaids, soon I'll make a thread about it. Any kind of help will be fantastic!! :D

I hope I do get more comfortable with water, maybe not the sea or river. But if I ever get able to go to at least a pool, I'll be already really happy lol
I'm from Porto Alegre - RS. It's in the southern region in brazil, we don't have pretty beachs here :<
what citys have you visited here? and thank you <3

Porto Allegre! I have not been but my boyfriend is a musician and performed there for Reveillon 2013 (New Years Eve). He played with Samuel J & DJ Tuca at Praia Cassino. I perform with him but was not on that tour. But I've been to Salvadore for Carnaval (World's Largest Party crossed off the Bucket List!), Floripa and I've been to Rio twice. Love Brasil and hope to go back soon!

I love the merfolklore! Mythology characters were my favorite thing to study when I was little.

Oh, those beachs are the best. I've been on salvador, floripa/florianópolis(and other 5 beachs from santa catarina, there are wonderful places there and it's really close to my state so we can go by car) and RJ too
If you ever get the chance, the prettiest place I've ever been on Brazil is Maceió. Even I, that have this phobia, got amazed by how pretty is the sea there and went on a boat to the middle of the ocean to see the animals. My brother even got the chance to hold a small and cute octopus
