I was wondering what the meaning of your mer name is?
My name; Aurora = Dawn and also after the Aurora Borealis and Oceania = Ocean, my name literally translates to "Dawn of the new Ocean."
What does your mer name mean?

This is a good idea!!! Selene- meaning- "moon"
It was the name of the Greek goddess of the moon.

I believe Kalani means 'heavens' or 'the sky' in Hawaiian. When I first gave myself that name, I didn't actually actually know that it had a translation let alone a word in another language :D
My mer name Vela apparently has many meanings in different languages, and I find that I like them all :)
Vela means:
in Italian- Sail or sailing
in Portuguese- Candle
in Sanskrit- Shoreline
in Old Norse it is Lament or cry
finally in Finnish Vela is an oath
When I chose the name it was the Sanskrit meaning that I learned first.
This is all according to a google search of the name Vela. So I could be wrong..... :)
Triton-Mahtlinnie

"Mahtlinnie" means offshore, or towards the sea in Chinook jargon
Mermaid Jaffa

My name is a type of chocolate lolly. I have a crisp hard shell and am soft and orangey on the inside.
Mermaid Mystery
04-17-2016, 10:28 PM
"Mystery" Comes from the Mystery Wrasse, which is one of my favorite fish. I have no idea why it's called the Mystery Wrasse
Chelle
04-17-2016, 11:01 PM
Well, I googled it, and apparently "Chelle" is Hebrew and means "Who is like God?"
But I picked it because it's part of my middle name, so obscure enough for people to have a hard time googling me and finding personal info. Bonus is that it sounds like "shell".

I was born in Ireland in Donegal, Co. My Aunt and my Mother, which are fluent n Gaelic, came to the USA almost 27 years ago. They helped me come up with my name. "Keiayra" Pronounced either "Keira" or more commonly "Key-R-uh" (Depending on your brogue.) It is Gaelic for "Into the Dark."

Actually oath in Finnish is vala, not vela :)

I actually speak Hebrew. It's a word linking a noun to another noun, defining a sense of ownership. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Mermaid Arabella
04-18-2016, 11:23 AM
I haven't officially chosen my mermaid name yet, but I'm leaning towards Arabella. It's apparently Dutch for "beautiful" but I picked it b/c I like names ending with "bell" or "bella" - it makes me think of "antebellum" and my family is Southern, so it's sort of a nod to my heritage? Bonus: it's the name of the crazy cat lady from Harry Potter :)
Saelyyia
04-18-2016, 12:24 PM
I'm pretty fond of names that end that way as well MerPixie, probably because my actual name is based off the Cerebellum and it gives me a pretty unique name, but as for my Mer/fae name being saelyyia I came up with it and so it isn't a name with a given meaning. I suppose that means I could make it anything I wished though...Should probably think about that incase I get asked by a kid again at the pool.
" finally in Finnish Vela is an oath "
Actually oath in Finnish is vala, not vela :)
Thank you for the correction! I had a feeling google would be wrong about at least one of the meanings :)
The Magic Crafter
04-18-2016, 01:18 PM
I actually pulled my Mermaid Name (and Magic Crafter Name), from a game called "Devil May Cry." I L-O-V-E that game, and spiders... and the name of a giant scorpion-spider in that game is "Phantom...." and he is adorbs!! <3 So, I chose to call myself that. :) (Also, I do identify with the Gothic culture, and tend towards dark things naturally, so I thought it fitting!)
It means "ghost," or a "figment of the imagination." I don't know about you all, but I rather like that second part a lot!

Ahahahaha! You're boyfriend's got good taste! :cheerleader:And thanks!! It was between Phantom, or Nevan, to be honest! Hehehheehe!
Mermaid Ankhali
04-18-2016, 02:28 PM
My two mer-names are Nkali and Kalina. Kalina came first. It is a combination of Kali the wonderful destroyer-goddess of the Hindu religion and my name, Niara. Nkali is a Nigerian word that essentially means power. I chose it because it contains "Kali" and it begins with N. I also enjoy the African root. I'm not Nigerian. However. I'm Ethiopian and Egyptian and Puerto Rican. I like to use Mermaid Nkali, but sometimes I still use Kalina because it is easier to pronounce. (Nkali is pronounced N-kah-LEYH btw)

Mermaid Whisper
05-04-2016, 11:02 AM
Mine (Whisper) is a new one for me. I chose it because I love the siren aspect of mermaiding, luring in sailors and singing beautifully, so I figured Whisper was one of those alluring, mysterious names, and it just resonated with my personality somehow. Plus, it's easy for kids to say :)
Mermaid Lied
05-13-2016, 12:04 AM
Lied is a type of German song. I know it's not a real name, but I really wanted something different. Plus I was inspired by the anime, 'Elfen Lied' and that I am mostly of German descent.
Merman Dylan
05-14-2016, 12:01 AM
The name Dylan is a Welsh baby name. In Welsh the meaning of the name Dylanis: Son of the Wave, born near the sea, influence.
Well, I picked Dylan because of all the names related to water this one fit me the most. I spent half my life at the beach and the other half swimming in water. I feel a very strong connection between me and water. I think it's in my blood.
Mermaid Mia
05-16-2016, 05:08 PM
Mia is my mermaid name. I have seen it attributed to many meanings in Hebrew, Italian, Swedish, and Scandinavian. It has been said to mean beloved, wanted child, bittersweet, star of the sea, mine, and even rebellion. I chose it because my given name is Amelia and my mom calls me Mia. This way I will be likely to respond to it if someone (like a child) calls my name, and it is easy to pronounce. I found that amelia was already used by a well known mermaid, and that my other nickname amy was just too common.

My mermaid name, Aurelia, is the genus classification for moon jellies. Jelly fish, specifically moon jellies, have always been my favorite sea creatures. I really wanted my mersonality to reflect my love for jellies, but also my scientific mind.

Well I don't have a specific Mer name, but my name is Alexis which means "to help or defend" which is pretty cool.
My normal nickname is Lexi...the urban dictionary meaning is absolutely hilarious, especially as a guy with Lexi as a name.

It also comes from the Latin word aureus meaning "golden."

I'm a Latin teacher so I felt I had to choose a Roman name. Of course I happened to choose one with a Greek root. Aeliana comes from the Greek word helios meaning sun. At first I chose it because I liked it, not because of the meaning. But i have a good friend who said it's very fitting because I have a sunny disposition. Here's hoping I live up to it!
Sheira Seastar
05-23-2016, 11:59 PM
Seastar is the title of one of my favorite childhood book, and Sheira sounded beautiful and is an alternate spelling to the name Shiera. Shiera Seastar is also the name of a character from the book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R R Martin. I personally find the character very interesting and I wish there was more information about her as she is only mentioned in the ASOIAF histories. She's a part of House Targaryen, and I kind of look like a Targaryen with my long platinum blonde hair. So, that's how I picked out my mer-name:)
Trade Winds

"Mystery" Comes from the Mystery Wrasse, which is one of my favorite fish. I have no idea why it's called the Mystery Wrasse
I used to be Mystery until recently. I named myself after Spongebob's seahorse (since i am a hippocampus). However i decided to take a better name since for 3 yrs I haven't been able to settle on anything. Thus Trade Winds. That would be due to my pinball obsession.

Mermaid Cataleya

Rivertee
06-27-2016, 09:53 PM
I'm loving the mer lore of these names and seeing how each was inspired, made, or just lucked upon. It's always so fun to read about others and really get to see the soul behind the tail. :)
Rivertee comes from my two hometown marine atvantages. Rivers and Manatees! I litterally come from the city of bridges and ever winter you can go to many docs, marinas, even our local zoo has a gangway out on a river to see many Manatees migrate and rest in warmer waters. As a kid we used to swim with a certian family of manatees every spring in a creek down south, the little ones seemed to reflect my brothers and I and the parents always felt the need to swim under us and carry us to the fallen trees that they ate moss off of.
As a mermaid I want to remember where I come from and those special memories as a child. Thus the name and all my tails having a rounded fluke instead of a V. :D

Mazu, pronounced Matsu was the Chinese goddess of the sea and I have a koi fish tail design. Koi were in China before being brought to Japan where everyone associates them.
Mermaid Miradis
07-08-2016, 05:54 AM
My name, Miradis, means in different languages: "ocean", "peace", "prosperous"
I originally derived it from the northern name "Mira" which translates to "sea", "ocean".
"-dis" is Old Norse and means "goddess".
Talia
08-19-2016, 09:50 AM
From Wikipedia:
Thalia: "the joyous, the flourishing", from Ancient Greek: "to flourish, to be verdant".
I spell it without the "h" so it sounds Ta-lee-ah, instead of Za-lee-ah.
But also because it's the name of Talia al-Ghul (from the Batman comic books). I like her. The thought of her being a deadly mermaid resonates with me :pirate:
kanyatalake
08-27-2016, 07:06 PM
Well my username "kanyatalake" is Oneida (my tribe) for "lake". I'm an Ndn Mermaid. :) But I have my real name too in the language.
