The city I work for has two pools. One of them is doing a princess and pirate splash party. I have talked to the princess party company about joining as a merman and they approve the idea but can't just add me since the city is paying per performer. I sent an email asking about helping out as a merman for free for experience. About a week later I hadn't heard back and so I sent a followup email with brief amounts of details. The response was basically we will do what we did last year. There are many people asking about activities for boys besides the pirate:

Am I at an end or is there anything else I could do to mer at the party?

The merman will be rescuing victims who have walked the plank. He'll take them to his secret hideout (one corner of the pool), and show them the ways of the merman, like how to pose for the camera with scary faces and claws (hands). How to growl and blow kisses and swish tail in water to create little vortexes.

Paint scales on the kiddos ... fishnet stocking and dab on acrylic paint.

No, no scary faces and claws...im a non scary person.
I think my wording was off enough my question is being misunderstood. What, if anything, can I do to try and be a merman at that party?

Oh well. You could do what the other mermaids do, tell stories and have a show and tell.

I'd call again an ask who the event cordinator is and if dhes in charge of entertainment and how to get in touch with said person.. find out where she is and go down there tail in hand and describe what you want to do to help bring in more boys to the party. It'd increase revenue and help broaden the audience rather than it be geared mostly to girls. A pirate is great but he will need a partner. AND what better way than a merman. Then described your skills and what you can do to entertain. I find people are visual. Sometimes being right in front of someone helps them to understand and makes it harder to say no.

But TELL THEM how it benefits them.

Oh hey I just found the original message I had sent:
Hi Jodie, I am Travis Edrington, I am a lifeguard at Holiday Aquatic center. I am also a merman (https://www.facebook.com/MermanChatfish/). I have been talking to Sarah from Little Princess Parties for a while now about doing birthday parties but its not well know there is a merman in area. She said it would be ok for Merman Chatfish to join, its pay by the charter she doesn't want to add someone without permission and charge more. Because I am still getting started I am happy to volunteer and do it for free. I will already have a background check on file with WDM since I work at Holiday and teach swim lessons to kids. I can provide more info if you want.

Most of the time, for events like this you have to "audition" for a part, the princess company may not have responded because they also have an image to uphold and sometimes they don't want people who don't fit that image to be associated with their company even if you aren't at the event as a part of the company people will always assume.
When sending emails to any party entertainment company trying to get a piece of the cake make sure you do it as if you were auditioning for a big part in a play or auditioning for a part in their company even if you aren't and just want to participate in the event. Send a very good email with a hook in it, be enthusiastic, and infom the company of what you can offer and that you will hope to be able to work with them on the event. Along with the email send photos of yourself and make sure they're very flattering, princess companies are all about look. They want people at the event who will make them look good and not have parents fuming at the mouth that they hired a random person who looks like a civilian who just put on a tail to get near kids. Send photos of your tail too, sale yourself to them,this is your sales pitch.
If you still can't get in the event, don't feel too bad, you just have to find something else. Make your own event, do a reading at a library, Earth day is coming up, do an Earth day meet and greet, you're your own PR person so if people don't know there's a merman for hire then you need to let them know.
A good pitch will be:
Hello <insert name>!
My name is <name>, I am very interested in an event that you will be hosting soon, <event name, date> at <event location>. I am a professional merman here in the <where you live> area with history working with children of all ages. I am very professional and believe that the event will be livened up and more unique with a merman making an appearance. I mostly provide birthday parties for children so children are my main audience, I can play games and entertain them when the other entertainers are too busy or have too much on their hands. I can also offer photo sessions and a merman meet and greet for both the adults and the little ones.I have included photos of myself for you to review, thank you so much for your time, I hope to hear from you soon.
With care,
<Insert your name>
<Insert mer name>
<email address>
<phone number if you have a business one>
<website (I suggest making a separate website that isn't a facebook page, it seems more professional)>
<Logo if you have one>

Also if you do offer face painting never ever ever use acrylic paint or cheap face paints. Get the good stuff. Cheap stuff and acrylic paint can cause burns on children's skin and allergic reactions and if you're trying to break into the party scene you don't need that kind of rep before you even get started.

Oh no I have the princess company's ok, the owner likes the idea. The problem is getting WDM parks and rec to say yes to me. I already work for WDM as a lifeguard at the other pool they run during the summer. Should I redo this thread? Seems like my wording is confusing.
