Starting a neoprene tail soon and researching paints. I've seen the lumiere paints around and I was wondering the specific pros of these paints? They seem to be something I have to special order, are there other paints mers recommend? Is it easy to mix custom colors with lumieres? Is the shimmery finish worth the expense?

I saw an amazing tail recently that was painted with Jones Tones. I think the company changed the name to allure adhesive paint

Mermaid Nyx's goooorgeous tail is a Jones Tones tail. It is certainly on my radar. I was hoping to find some local paint that would work because I am sooo impatient with ordering but I may have to give in and order some. Tulip seems to be the only local fabric paint. Anyone know about them?

I used tulip brand puffy paint on neoprene. It works just fine. It is not as shiny as Jones Tones though, which is what I had originally hoped for but my wallet won that fight. Most acrylic based paints adhere to neoprene, the problem is the stretching. If you pant it un-stretched they will crack and if you paint it stretched you have to be sure it fits your right, it wont shrink back. I've seen many people make a form of their body to be in the tail while they paint, i just stuffed mine with plastic bags.
From what I understand, the lumiere paints are more suited to fabric tails.

Yeah, money is a factor. I certainly don't mind paying for quality paint, I just have to wait a little longer. I can't find a place I'm familiar with online to buy Jones Tones, Amazon doesn't have it or anything. They DO have "Allure Adhesive Paint" but it's by E6000 and I know that stuff is super toxic...I'll have to research into it. I doubt that E6000 itself is in it, but yeah.

I would say tulip is still good quality, just a different look? If that makes sense. I would suggest if jones tones has your heart to buy directly from the company, when i was last looking they had their own website and even had bulk discounts. That was months ago though...

Deco Art SoSoft is good too. Does not require heating.

Yeah I saw those on the neoprene tail that is floating around right now. The results were beautiful, I don't know if I can get them local but I may order those for the $ factor. They look very affordable.

The more I think about it, the more I want paints with a shimmery finish to them like the lumieres. I'll have to do some research. Sosoft has a metallics line but it doesn't have an orange, only a gold, which may work over an orange? Hard when you can't find swatches of any colors.

Have a look at Liquitex Fabric Medium. Does not require heat setting. And you can use acrylic paints to mix it with.

I'm thinking of getting a bottle of it next pay. And have a go at painting one of my tails.

Let me know how the liquitex works. I bought Golden's fabric medium to use for a top. The fabric gets pretty stiff. I haven't used it in water yet. I am however working on a tail using Lumieres and while the paint is gorgeous it's very expensive if you plan on painting a whole tail , it also flakes a bit and made the fabric stiffer. Not water tested yet because I am still painting.

Lumeriex now has been water tested and flakes off a bit after 4 swims. It's worn off a bit where your ankle is in the monofin.

Still beautiful though, I have extra paint when it really needs a touch up.

Going to water test acrylic with fabric medium soon
