I created a Little Mermaid tail made entirely out of aluminum scales.
She is roughy 8,000 small scales, 16,000 rings and 130+ hours of work

Thank you very much!
For my first scale maile project, I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out

Oh my gosh! You've done a wonderful job! I've made small pieces of chain maille, but this is incredible!

:jawdrop:That is both stunning and mindbogglingly beautiful and amazing Mermaid Auri! You did a great job. It reads so well in photographs too.

Oh my! This looks fantastic! And is it odd that I really want to pet your tail? :P

Cool! Clever AND gorgeous!
Side note: there really ought to be a thread named, "Cats react to mermaid tails!" because some people's kitties have the funniest expressions checking out our tails.

Holy Carp! that is amazing! Is it heavy?

Mermaid Auri

Blanket Thank You to everyone!

Saelyyia, I was very pleased with the way it looks in photographs, I wasn't sure how well the shine and individual scales would show up

Mermaid Arabella, THE SHININESS WAS VERY PLEASING

Mermaid Lorelei, Totally not odd at all, scale maille is strangely fun to pet. Many people asked me to do so

Calizaire, the thread would be amazing, cats and tails are a beautiful combination!

Ashton, I haven't measured exactly, but I'd say probably 10-15 pounds. I went with aluminum because steel probably would have weighed me into the ground...

Ashton

That was smart to make it out of a lighter weighted material.

Maybe someday I'll play with steel. I do like that its not quite as dirty as aluminum tends to be

This is absolutely beautiful. It also gets my mind whirling with ideas of mermaids charging into battle, donning elaborate scale maile 😍😍

Oh goodness you know of my tail! Welp i'm currently puzzling over what kind of fluke i want and whether i want to use a monofin (buying or making) and whether i want to be pretty and fish like, or do i want power and speed.
I'll be mulling it over further today, but i got the full body of the tail done last night! Fluke and fins are all thats left.

I did a little digging on the "show us your tail" thread. I love the pop tab idea!
I've spent a lot of time pondering the same thing. My current fluke is made out of sheet metal, so not so great for water use.
What are your plans for fins?
I've been rolling around with a few ideas, none of which I've gotten the chance to play with yet

Well since im using fabric to sew my tabs onto, i can use more fabric for backing for fins. As for the fluke, i have the option of not using a monofin and simply weaving a stiff material between tabs. However again, im conflicted. I think i want more speed and power than i want pure aesthetics.

Heres the finished base and the fabric i may use. Its light and flowy though. Either way i'll have to use it i guess.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160629/c0940c0137bb7af448a03f6bf40172e4.jpg

Oh very cool
That looks so awesome! I love the little rainbow bits.
I do have one question though, how much soda did you have to drink for that thing?!

Well,i usually have one or two a month. What you see in the picture is a collective effort. I've dug through recycling bins (with owner consent), had friends on the hunt, and picked up every can i see on the streets. It's taken me over 5 years to get this many.

I think my favourite part about this is that it weighs roughly 5lbs currently.

That is a valiant effort, my friend. Kudos to you and yours!
That's so light! I think mine weighs about 15-ish pounds
