My Second Tail! Sequins, Shelf Liner, Mahina Merfin

I made my first tail with a finfun fin and some scale fabric I bought online. It was pretty cute for my first time. Now, I'm back at it again with more sewing experience, and some higher quality materials. The material has some give, but it isn't considered four way stretch. The sequins are also reversible. I'm planning to sew in a zipper, and using fringe to hide it. I feel like the zipper will allow the material to stay on without using an elastic band. I also want to paint the shelf liner, and somehow make it sparkle to match the material. I would love any advice or tips, but please be nice. I'm still learning and experimenting. So I will post updates as I go along. :D

Also any tips on making these images smaller??

Oh wow that material looks amazing! How do the sequins hold up in water? I am thinking of doing something similar on my first tail, but hand sewing sections of it on.... Lots of work, I know, but it was cheaper and I think it will be therapeutic for me!

Well I've only washed the fabric once, and it held up well. It just got really heavy. haha oh wow I couldn't imagine sewing that many sequins. I've seen people glue them on though? I bought way too much fabric, and it was like $50. So far with the fin included I'm like $150 into this project. I'll probably end up having to buy more shelf liner though, and I haven't bought paint yet. I might end up doing the fins a baby pink color. The fabric is peachy, but it shimmers pink too.

I'm on a strict timeline so I won't have time. The back of it is definitely itchy, but not see through. I plan on wearing nude colored leggings underneath to be comfortable. I'll probably go back later and do that though. :)

What about spray paint? The outdoor kind that you typically use to paint patio furniture so it doesn't fade in harsh weather conditions.

On another thread they said use spray paint listed for plastic like outdoor furniture. Auto restorers also have special spray paint for car interiors that might work.

I used spray paint on my shelf liner! It chips when you cut it into strips and the first time you swim in it, but after that, the paint is pretty consistent and sturdy. If you coat both sides of the shelf liner, it's harder to tell when stuff chips. And it's not noticeable at all in the water. There's lots of sparkly spray paint out there, but if you don't want to do that... If I was you, I would try painting a thin layer of E6000 on a small patch of the shelf liner and then pouring some glitter on it!

Making some progress! I've glued two sheets of shelf liner together with e6000. Outlined my fin with sharpie, because I plan to spray paint so it doesn't really matter. I'm also going to use the extra strips to make some hip fins. I think the paint might hold better if I sand it first? Because I sanded the parts I was gluing, and it made it a feel little rough. And I couldn't see the scratches. I'll probably test it out on a scrap piece first to make sure it looks good when painted. Also for glittery sparkleness on my fins I think I'm going to glue on some gems! If that doesn't work I'll look into some glitter spray paint. :D I'm really really excited about this!! So! I forgot to post the finished product mostly because I was mad. lol The tail was great for the library (dry) event. I even made the local newspaper! There were lots of mistakes with this tail. The first was using velcro. I was in a hurry, and thought it would be fine. It kept coming apart during the event, but I had a fishnet on and the chair had a back to it. So no one noticed. This fabric isn't stretchy enough to just use an elastic band. It NEEDS a zipper. As far as swimming goes the paint on the shelf liner cracked and peeled off immediately. I may have had too many layers. Not sure. The fabric is really pretty, and sparkly in the water. I'd recommend it, but your movement is limited. I still have the tail, so I'll eventually come back to it and fix the problems. When I'm not so mad at it. haha

I have a tail made with this fabric. I've used it for two years now and it holds up amazingly well.

So I will say that I used an elastic waistband and it worked fine, but a zipper wouldn't be a bad idea either, but I didn't find it necessary. The hardest part of this sequin fabric is that you have the trim the sequins off where the seams are so the fabric will lay right.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. Maybe you can modify it?
