Hello all! I have been creeping around here for a few weeks, and have been a sideline mermaid enthusiast since... Forever? I enjoy making costumes for my daughter, but not myself. So now comes the time where I delve into tail making.
So, a silicone fin sticking out of a cloth tail. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't

I really want to avoid having to mold, cast and then recast for a final project, so if I can our silicone right into clay, I'll be really happy, but I'm pretty sure that won't work...
We bought a simple target monofin, which I plan on imbedding into the fin cast

I am making a tail out of gold stretch fabric, and covering it with gold and glow in the dark puff paint scales(with a bit of green or blue accent in the edges)

I'm thinking of closing the center point of the tail, and leaving the sides a the the bottom open, sort of like... Panties... For the fin to stick out of.

I have a hard time making plans, usually I just barrel through blindly. I'm really trying to change that, so I went back and painstakingly drew out what I want! Hopefully this fin doesn't copy anyone, I put down my laptop and thought of all the things I love about mermaids, and mostly it came down to the shape of the fin, I love curls and sweeping lines, but I didn't want to get too complicated for my first design! So hopefully this is simple enough to handle.

I actually bought shelf liner today for a future tail, I plan to paint. Have you thought of using another brand of monofin that is more sturdy than that one you have?

Well, no, because I have no idea what I'm doing! And since this is a beginner tail for mostly costume sake not much swimming, I sort of felt it didn't matter too much. I feel like the monofin is going to be there to give it a bit of hold, but I plan to make the fin at least six inches bigger than it. BUT, if it doesn't work out, I'll get a better monofin [emoji38]

Oh so it is a costume only tail? Absolutely no swimming? :(

Well then, why not have pre-printed scale tail? Spandex World has a ton of scale spandex as well as many other colors. And there are fabric tail makers too like Sun Tail and Fin Fun. Those tails are quite cheap, unless you live in Australia... So if you mess up, you can just buy another one quite easily. And they've got the scales printed on them already, you can paint over it to add in your own prettiness.

Not no swimming at all! Just beginner swimming, this tail is for a seven year old, who is learning to swim confidently and for an event in Tucson, a mermaid parade. Also, I am an artist, and pre printed isn't interesting to me, I want to play with texture, feel the silicone, see how things work together, and build my way up! I make many costumes and am a self taught seamstress, but find that working with mold able textiles is so fun!!

Sizing my kid today! My goodness, each measurement was 1/2"-2" different, no curves! And so short! It was so funny because when I measure myself there are so many curves!

I do not know what came over me(must be shopping at sunrise). I had planned on gold with green accents, but as I was browsing colors... A lovely pink somehow found itself in my cart! To get crisp clear outlines, do one color at a a time. So for example, you do the white color first, let it dry thoroughly, then do the pink, let that dry, then the next part which is adding the finer details. If you it step by step, you won't end up with that horrible mess you have in the photo.

Ideally, you want to work with the light color first, which in your case is white, then dark colors the pink and lastly, the gold details. This is so that if you find mistakes with the light colors, you can easily go over it with the darker color.

If you did it the opposite way, dark color first then light, its much harder to fix mistakes.

Well, thanks for calling it a horrible mess. What I did, and this is scrap cloth that has about ten different techniques on it, was outline scales in the "white" which is glow in the dark, and then went back after it was dry and added more glow, and was trying to get it to blend down into a tiny bit of pink, which, I couldn't seem to make tiny enough!

Sorry bout that. I call it how I see it.
Are you painting from the tube or using a brush? To get details, I'd get a much finer paint brush, like the kind they use for water color painting.

Brush on the white first instead of getting so much color on at once. You can slowly build up layers of white, that when you add the pink, the wetness of the pink paint won't make the white paint all wet and gooey.

Have you thought of cutting a row of scallop shapes to use as a stencil/guide? That might help keep a sharp edge and consistent size.

I used a stencil, a paintbrush, and a toothpick to get my puffy paint scales the way i wanted them. If your having trouble with the pink i would recommend only putting a small dot on the fabric and spreading it out with the brush. I too had a TON of test patches

So I basically just stared all day at the way you did your scales, they are so lovely! Then I spent the rest of the day using your tips to get a better scale. The middle three in this photo are my favorite, but with top shading like the bottom three, though I'll be adding another layer of glow, or maybe glitter, puff paint!

So I'm cursing my slipping hand. I started giving the scales a pink accent and am not sure if it goes with the theme of the costume! I'm making a pair of scaled leggings, and a full fin, that match. Sort of so we can "transform" into a pirate when she wants to walk. So the question is, does the pink look okay with the jacket? I think I might have to go back to green accents!

I love them! I have always loved these colors together, but I sort of scared myself when I though about it too hard.

Course, now as a baker, I'm thinking my next tail may have to be pastel, and look like cake icing, from your pictures, and playing with piping this silicone!

I really don't like the fluke much, it's asymmetrical and bumpy, but for my first time, it's fiiiiiiiiine.

I now understand why y'all cast. I can't wait until my daughter is a better swimmer, and at least she has a cloth tail to practice in!
