Mermaid Roller Skates!

Hi Mers, in addition to my Silicone Tailmaking project, I'm designing a pair of Mermaid Roller Skates! I'm going to start skating this summer as a workout with my girlfriends from the gym (skating is an excellent booty workout!) and we're getting all excited about bedazzling our skates! I got a little too excited and have spent all day coming up with too many ideas for how to build my scales. To help me decide I'm polling my pod and would love to know the Mernetwork's votes!

The three styles I'm choosing from (see pic):

Rhinestone Scales: teardrop jewels would make the scale shape and I would use tiny ones like a border around the larger teardrop ones.

Seashell Sequin Scales: like the amazing sequin tails, but would need to be smaller shells glued on.

Holographic or Glitter Vinyl Scales: made by cutting circles of the synthetic leather fabric and layering like a foam scale sheet.

My favorite color would be mint like in the border of the picture, but this is a rare color as far as crafting materials go so second choice would be aqua blue which is def easier to find.

What's your favorite style? Once I make my skates I'll be able to offer Mermaid Skates for custom order in my etsy shop, so I'm interested to know what other mermaids would be more interested in buying!

P.S. These will be perfect for me to wear to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade! I love parades but all the walking can be tiring. Plus mermaids don't walk! But they can glide on wheels!

This is a really cool idea. I love the vinyl scales. The sequins might be a little dangerous, if they fall off and end up on the skate deck.


Would there be any way of making skate covers? I rollerskate weekly, but I have a fairly expensive pair of skates and wouldn't want to do anything permanent to them even to bling them up.

Thanks! I'll mainly be skating outdoors but still don't want to litter. Sturdy glue applied carefully should keep them in place, if it works for sequin tails why not skates?

What kind of skates do you have? Been researching different brands. I really wanted a pair of Moxie Lolly skates by Reidell but they're almost $300 and I'm just getting into it so can't splurge there. The skate pictured is by Chicago.

For non-permanent options I can imagine a sort of half chap design, it probably wouldn't be able to cover the whole surface but could def be a fun accessory!

I love skating (with and without wheels), and I like the stones and holographic stuff best.
Not so much a fan of sequins.

But honestly, if there were a pair of skates purchasable looking like the one featured, I'd keep it just like that.
I wish I could get my hands on one, all available here is either black, or some very bulky, ugly style :(

That's such a cool idea. I'm keen to see how this turns out. I love skating too - ice skating and rollerblades - I never got the hang of roller skates.

I would be more likely to buy skate covers...the spandex over-socks that skating competitors use. They'd be easier to decorate, and repair (skating is rough on equipment, especially outdoors!), and one could own a variety of cover for one pair of skates.

As for skating at the parade, Surf Avenue is really rough, and if it's warm, there are patches of sticky tar repairs that get soft in the heat. I've never skated myself in the parade, but I've had many wheeled costumes...so be careful and wear your knee pads! Also, super hard to skate the last third of the parade up on the boardwalk!

I have a pair of Riedell 220's. (I'm pretty sure that's what they are, I bought them used.) They normally retail for $200-$400. Riedell makes some good skates, if you have a local roller rink you might also see what they sell. (Most rinks have a skate shop. Then you get to try stuff on too)

Chicago brand are kind of notoriously awful skates. (I have a pair of Chicago skates as well, same ones pictured there only the mens, and they were so bad they hampered my ability to learn because I just couldn't do anything. The toe stop also left nice blue streaks all down the concrete when I rode outside) If you ride outside in quads, make sure to get outdoor wheels. Soft Urethane. Soft wheels absorb the bumps of the road better and you're less likely to take a header.

I actually have skate covers like those boot covers. (can see them here (http://65.media.tumblr.com/a3e701bed522823b75c2764733458034/tumblr_o4qai6OkVZ1s8xd9ko1_1280.jpg)) They velcro to the bottom of my kneepads, then have a stirrup with a snap on it that go under the boots. I am really tempted to make some super blingy scale ones now. Heck, could even use that holographic scale fabric since skate covers wouldn't exactly be seeing water.

Just make sure to get outdoor wheels, it really makes a difference. I have a pair of sneaker skates I bought in 1974 (damn, I'm old!), and I swapped out the wheels for grease-packed closed-bearing skateboard wheels so I didn't get sand and grit inside the roller bearings.

I am a figure skater and use these covers over my Riedell skates to keep them from getiing knicked up. You could probably bling these out and slip them on roller skates rhe same way. They come in a variety of colors mine are nude to match my skating tights.

So sad I just realized I won't be able to make the Coney Island Mermaid Parade bc it's the same weekend our band is performing at Unifier Festival in MA. Well I guess I don't have a deadline so I have some time to order supplies from China. Unifier will be a blast and there's a beautiful lake for mermaiding, but was looking forward to meeting some of you Mers from the Ny area!

Cool ideas for the skate covers! I'll still probably want to bling my whole skates cause I just like to go all out like that! I'm sure the Chicago ones aren't the best but my girlfriend has a pair in my size so I can at least try it out and see if it will work for my needs. We're going to a rink tomorrow where there's a Monday night dance party that my breakdancing friends love! Should be fun and I'll check out what they have at the shop too.

I'm not an experienced roller skater myself, mainly rollerbladed as a kid but I'm good on a skateboard. I feel like I have to earn a quality pair of skates first plus it's just not in my budget with my current Tailmaking project underway. However there are a couple pairs of used Reidells on eBay for about $100-$115 that are tempting.
