I customized my Fin Fun tail!

Hello, merfriends!

I bought a Fin Fun tail in late April and it came in on May 2. Well, it looked beautiful, but it was awfully generic and I knew that hundreds (if not thousands) of people had the same tail. So, I did a little shopping!

I ordered Halo Blue Gold Lumiere from JoAnn's for $2.64. The shipping was what sucked--$7!

I got it today, and had some painting to do! I added paint to certain scales and redid the fluke in the style I've always dreamt about. The blue did seep through and it's only gold glitter on top, but I love it! I air dried it and heat set it, and now we have this!

I even used the extra fabric from taking it in to make a dorsal, also in gold glitter!

It is great to see you customize your tail! I especially love how you painted the fluke spines. :D Of course I love your color choice too because currently I am obsessed with the idea of a green and gold tail.

Beautiful! I was thinking of getting the black one for my best friend who is just starting out or sewing and hand painting a plain spandex one. I thought the black one needed a bit of blue and purple to make it more mermaid/siren like. Also how did you heat set the Lumiere? I would like to use heat set paint to revamp my old spandex tails but I'm kinda scared to heat set it because I don't want to ruin the spandex.

To avoid hurting the spandex when you go to heat set the Lumiere I put an old pillowcase over top of the spandex and iron it that way. Having another fabric as a buffer will definitely help keep the spandex safe. I iron the painted area until it gets fairly warm, but not too hot. I keep moving the iron in a circular motion to make sure that I am not constantly applying heat to just that one area which also helps. ;)
