As an Engaged mermaid I don't like going places without my ring. I wear it all the time, even out in cosplay, but not sleeping or in water. Thus the problem is: I DO NOT want to wear it swimming. I am afraid of damaging it or loosing it somehow.
So now my dilemma is where to get a ring that is adjustable, of a good material (wont break down in water or set off my metal allergies), not too expensive (like 100 or over is a no-go) and mermaid themed. I was thinking of making my own, such as a resin or silicone cast starfish with wire armature in it so that i have a little friend to wrap around my finger in place of my engagement ring.
I have looked though the accessories thread and while I found some BEAUTIFUL jewelry I didn't see anything that would fit my needs. Are there any other Mers out there with this same problem who have opinions, or better yet, suggestions?
Thanks!!
~Mia

I actually swim and perform while wearing my high school class ring (woo! Class of '05!). Very few people have actually noticed what it was until they saw it up close. Have you considered wearing your ring as a necklace?

I wouldn't swim with anything valuable like an engagement ring, especially on a necklace! The Water will take it from you!

Congrats on your engagement! I've been toying with the idea of getting one of these http://www.amazon.com/Silicone-Wedding-Rhinestone-Durable-Lifestyle/dp/B00XLMUQHQ
It's basically a silicone ring with a rhinestone in it. There are also a lot of just plain silicone rings available in lots of different colours, but I like the rhinestone, it's pretty :D

I really like this idea! Congrats on your engagement! :)

Thank you for all your suggestions! No I will not be putting it on a necklace. I will look into the silicone rings and if i do end up making some options for me i might sell more of them

You should have your ring insured then you could wear it all the time. (Coming from a mermaid with a long history of working in the jewelry industry)

I have been having the same problem! I looked into silicone rings but was a less than excited about the options out there. There are a few neat ones but most of them are just plain colors, which is fine but not very mermaidy. I would love to see some silicone artists try to make rings!

I think one of the black ones with the rhinestones will be good for now while i work on making something :3

It actually not that expensive. I should probably look at insurance anyway. But is value is more emotional than monetary. Thank you for the advice though!

Well, I'm not sure what metals you are allergic to but there are a bunch of places that sell the Moon rings from Mako Mermaids with a silver band and varying types of gemstones. Examples http://atoichi.com/rings-c-2_4/h2o-just-add-water-mako-mermaids-moon-ring-swarovski-capri-blue-crystal-by-atoichi-hkdeal-mermaid-tail-ring-925-sterling-silver-p-107.html or http://www.sterlingsilverart.com/presale-sterling-silver-mako-mermaid-tail-ring.html or here http://h2ojustaddwaterlocket.weebly.com/mako-mermaids.html

Only catch with buying a Moon ring is if you go swimming with it in public you will have to play up to the crowd of want-to-be merlings begging you show them some spells!! :)

Hello again. here with a quick update! Until i get myself together enough to make the little silicone starfish rings (which my mom and fiance have dubbed sili buddies) I purchased some silicone rings off of amazon. I got the "mens" product because i would rather have a thicker band than thinner, which tends to cut off my circulation. I have not taken them swimming yet. But they look nice and are very comfortable.
