Wow I can't believe I've been gone two years!
But now I'm back :)

I started my mermaiding journey two years ago, got my first monofin (So Dive Hydra) was swimming with it regularly, even made my first fabric tail and swam with it a few times in a friend's pool. But the further I got with it, the more I realized how I didn't want to do the whole professional mermaiding thing. I couldn't see myself starting my own business and doing birthday parties, etc. It just wasn't for me, even though I love seeing what the rest of you all are doing with it! I stalk a few mermaids on Instagram, and FinFolk..:p But I dropped out of mermaiding for a while and focused on my jewelry business, raised some chickens, rescued a third dog.. did some land-people stuff!

But I missed the water, I missed doing mermaid-y things! So I have made a new goal for myself now, which is that I want to go swim with wild dolphins! Hopefully, I am going to be able to swim with them at least in a monofin. I'll need some advice on choosing a good one, which I'll post for in the monofin threads. My goal is to start swimming again, get all the gear I need and save some more money and I'll be going to a week long retreat put on in Bimini in the Bahamas by the Wildquest company next year sometime: https://www.wildquest.com/

Looking forward to getting some advice on here to help me prepare to meet some dolphins, and of course share my experience on here! So happy to be part of this community again ;)

Welcome back! I hope you stick with mermaiding! I know it may seem like a lot of mers go professional or do parties, etc. but there are plenty of us mers that just do this for our own fun and not much else. It is okay if you don't plan to turn your mermaiding into a business. ;) Here is a thread that you might enjoy that was started for Nonprofessional mers: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?12776-Nonprofessional-mermaids-just-goofing-off

I wish you luck with your plan to swim with wild dolphins. I am hoping to swim with wild dolphins in the bay someday. I am guessing you would need a stiff monofin that would be good for ocean swimming such as a Finis Competitor monofin. It will help you not only swim well in the sea but it will also help you better keep up with the dolphins. Your Hydra might already be good for this though.

Wb! You don't have to be pro mermaid to have fun. Recreational mermaids have fun too!

Thanks for the link to the thread to nonprofessional mers, Alea! I will check that out more later.
Yes, you're right that my first choice to swim in the ocean would be the competitor..BUT I am going to have a weight limit for the baggage that I can take with me on the small plane that goes from FL to Bimini. and from what I understand, the competitor is quite a heavy monofin! I will need to find a different solution.

I swam with captive dolphins at Discovery Cove Orlando five years ago, and it was great having time in the water with them. But I am expecting the interaction with wild dolphins to be totally different. I want to be immersed in their world and learn about their natural behavior in the wild!
