I'm using the single scale method to make my forearm find and tail. I recently started making my scales and notices after repeatedly using the same mold my scales are starting to lose the texture. My molds are made out of plaster and I think that's the problem. What would be a better option to use so I can use the mold many many times and not lose the texture?

Can you post some pictures? I use a plaster mold too and I'm not having this problem, or not jet, so a picture could help my imagination.

I don't know if you can see it or not but the silicone is attaching to the molds and pulling the details out

You could try varnishing the moulds. Otherwise using a plastic resin should work better.
Good luck! Your scales look really pretty. [emoji4]

I used resin and its holding up really well- though I saw that sealing plaster with clear sealant would help- though not sure if that would work if you have been putting Vaseline on it or something. But resin rocks! (Once it is a mold, and when it is being poured is a horrible disaster of a material that I loathe...lol)

Varnish could help, I did it in my mold mostly to prevent my silicone from getting clouded, do you use a releasing agent? If you don't I would try that, it's amazing!

The blue is when I first made it and the second one was a few uses later. I used blue food dye in it but it rejected it

I think I'll redo it with resin though. But what kind?

And no I don't use a release agent

A release agent does wonders, I would use it with any mold

What kind would you recommend for a resin mold

Use urethane resin for scale molds. You don't need mold release. Plaster is no good for repeated use.

Is urethane the same as polyurethane ?

I guess a better question is what kind of resin does everyone use?
