How do you go about being a mermaid? Especially when living in an apartment?

How do you go about taking a swim when you have no pools available to you? I am located in Brooklyn, NY, and literally all the pools that are somewhat close are always packed to the max, or don't even allow plastic beach balls inside! :( I do however have several beaches available to me. But the thing is..well, I'm embarrassed. How do you go about taking a tail into the beach, in public with that many people? How does one overcome the "stare" ? Do all beaches allow tails in the water? I'm very un-experienced as this is a new hobby I hope I can get into! Any advice is highly appreciated :)

I haven't went swimming in my tail yet either. But I was gonna go with my local pod so I'd feel less awkward LOL

To overcome the stare, stare back! Show teeth!:lol:

The first few times you go swimming, it'll be very awkward. Then afterwards, once you get the hang of it, it'll feel so natural. And when you take the tail/fin off, it'll feel awkward again like you lost something.

I think the best thing to help overcome fear of swimming in public for the first time is bring a friend! If you can find another mer in your area who wants to come swimming with you that's ideal, but otherwise just invite some regular friends who you know will be cool with you bringing along your tail. Have them swim along with you so you can ingore everyone else and just enjoy swimming with your friends! Good luck let us know how it goes!

just go and do it at the beach! ignore the stares- people are probably wondering if you're a real mermaid or just a figment of the imagination. if people want their pitcure taken with you or to ask about your tail, be friendly and comply :)

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice! I guess I'll just suck it up and enjoy the time I have there! Like angelstarfish said, the worst they could is be curious right? :)
