Hey MerNetwork!

So I painted my tail over the weekend and its been way past the green period. I washed the silicone tail with isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while then pigmented some new silicone with pearl ex pigments. I then painted it on and left it to cure, the tail cured great but there are some parts that didn't and when I go to remove it the silicone just starts to lift away continuing into the properly cured section almost like the second section didn't cure to the first.

is there any advice to fix this? or do I have to peel it all off and re paint? if so how do I stop this from happening again?

this seems to be a common issue and it seems like only one tail maker can guarantee that they can paint past the green period and isnt sharing their secrets (that I know of, I could be wrong) It sounds like you did everything right, I do know there's a difference between how silicone vs silicone caulking cures. Dragonskin is a chemical cure process, but caulking is air. So if you did the caulking too thick it wont fully cure. I've had luck with thinning out silicone caulking that matches up with caulking that smoothon lists as working with their product, but I still found I had a consistency difference. It cured but still looks different than the rest of the tail.

Thanks Raina, it is dragon skin. It's just odd I peeled off the lifting silicone and it seemed the underside didn't cure. The extra silicone in the container cured properly and the silicone not touching the old silicone cured so I'm wondering if some of the alcohol was still on the tail.

So I wiped away the old silicone with some baby wipes and I'm going to wash it with the alcohol one more time and see where that goes!!

It sounds like somethings inhibited the cure, but I have no idea what.

The one thing I would recommend though would be to test paint a small area first so you don't end up losing a lot of silicone and pigment.

You could try washing it with the alcohol then giving it a rinse with water and letting it air dry. (I have no idea if that would help or just make it worse, but if all else fails and nobody else can help, it can't hurt to try!)

I hope you get it sorted. Good luck!

Pearliemea answerd a similar question, she recommended washing with water and detergent, one kind in particular can't think of the name right now, let it dry and then clean it with alcohol the highest percentage you can get. She answerd it a few hours ago so you should be able to track back her response
