I used YouTube Tutorials to download Sony Vegas Pro 13 for free. You have to wade through the ones that don't work and check the comments to make sure there are no viruseses or whatever, but quite a few of them can really show you how its done. Its been 3 years, and I got an editing system that cost several hundred dollars for free.

Windows movie maker is the easiest editing program around. No complications and it's click and drag easy.

Windows Movie Maker is a good one. I also like iMovie if on a Mac computer. (but I might be the only person who actually likes iMovie).

I do a lot of my video on my iPhone, and there are some really great free video editing apps that give decent results. not SUPER advanced in what you can do. But if youre making a teaser or promotional reel, they do the trick. and they're free.

This is kind of old but I'd recommend Cyberlink PowerDirector. They have a free version and it works really well.

A really powerful one for basic purposes is HitFilm! http://hitfilm.com/express Absolutely free and is a totally great starter program.
As for paid software, I have been using Adobe Premier Pro CC for YEARS and its beautiful and great but also very expensive. I had to downgrade to a lesser (but still decent) version of the software called Adobe Premier Elements. Its great for beginners and you can find it for 100 dollars with a bit of searching.
Lastly, I also use Movie Studio 12 (formerly known as Sony Vegas I believe) It gives me hardly any trouble and a cheaper alternative to more professional softwares.

If you want a more advanced alternative at some point (which allows for implementation for sfx and such), I'd highly recommend DaVinci Resolve! It's free and can compete with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects (having used both). They offer a pro version as well, which is not free, however, whenever the pro version gets an update, the free version is updated to the last pro version. [emoji846]
