Before I begin, I would like to apologize in advance for how many questions follow!
1. How many 20mm sequins (approx.) would be needed to cover a tail thats about 3 yards of lycra?
2. Will lycra hold its own with hand sewn sequins all over?
3. If not, what do you suggest that is easy to work with and CHEAP?
4. Do the flat sequins look just as good as the seashell sequins?
5. Are there any stores here in Phoneix that sell cheap sequin?

Okay, so maybe 5 questions isn't a ton haha:lol: Whatever :p I just want my tail to be perfect! I am also making a Little Mermaid inspired tail soon for a friend, and would like to do some sequins on that too(: UGH I have a sequin problem!! Anyone got a cure for that? (I am awful at painting and blending, so painting the scales would be tough, and buying scale fabric seems rather pricey)!

I'm new at tail making too, not s new to sequins.

A lot. We're talking a lot. Over 10,000 easy. even with 20 mm ones.
Hand sewn sequins are very hard to keep secure. I made a ball gown and it constantly loses sequins. I glued them to things after, I lose sequins.
Any fabric you use sequins on will start to lose elasticity and will become stiffer and hard to move.
Unless somewhere sells a lot of sequins cheap, it might be cheaper in the long run to buy the fabric.
(my sequins cost 1.99 a bag and with the amount I had to buy it was over 60$ for a small amount of detailing on the dress.)

If you still want to go with sequins, buy a bag, get a little bit of lycra, enough for an ankle piece. Cover it. Swim in water with it. Run. Walk. Sea how it does.

My top is covered in sequins and I was planning on using the same ones for my fin at least and then run smaller ones up the side. Its mostly for the little mermaid tail that I was going to go with full sequin. What do you think about gluing and sewing?

I would use neoprene as a base. I don't thank lycra will last long with sequins sewed onto it.

What do ya'll think of using a stretch sequin spandex that is pre-made?

That could also work, I made one out of it some time ago.

I'm just starting out, so I'm not quite ready to go with neoprene...I'm also just getting familiar with my sewing machine(:

If you have Lycra, I would strongly recommend using another material that is a bit sturdier underneath. Lycra will lose shape and strength the more you sew onto it. Glue will, of course, cause the Lycra to become very stiff. Not always a bad thing as it means the shape will be a bit stronger, but just make sure you make a form of your legs to go inside of it while you are putting them on. Don't put yourself through the heartbreak of putting it on when you're done and they all come off because it stretches and breaks the thread/glue.

I used shelf liner paper! The least expensive place I found was Home Depot, Lowes and target also has it.
