Mermaiding with a nose plug/how to stop using a noseplug?!?!

So ive been swimming since i was very young, and ive never been able to go underwater without plugging my nose! Ive tryed every technic out there and nothing ever seems to work for me! I just recently got into mermaiding and i purchased a noseplug that acually goes inside your nostrils rather than pluging them like a clip. And it works really well but i look ridiculous in it. I feel like i cant be a professional mermaid without being able to swim without a plug. Does anyone else have this problem?? Do any professional mermaids use noseplugs? I know some people just suck it up, but the second i go under(even after blowing a bunch of air out my nose) water comes flooding right up my nose into my throat. I know it cant be healthy to ingest that much chlorine.

Using my nose plug makes swimming fun, but i feel very insecure in it (mermaid dont use freakin nose plugs)! I will take any advice you guys can give me!

i generaly have good control of my soft palette (it tightens when you put your tongue up, thats why that works) and don't have to worry about the water in my nose thing. However i do use the bubble technique when changing depth or if i ever flip over. Yes, yes you do have to blow out the entire time. Basically, if there is air there no water will be there. I wish you luck! Also, i havent seen the nose plugs, but do they make them in clear? It might not work for gigs but could be helpful for photoshoots as you go professional.

If it doesn't work the first time you do this, keep trying, soon you'll learn the timing of when to do it. I know the first time I tried it, I still ended up choking and swallowing the leftover water when I surfaced because I didn't time it properly.

Those look fantastic! I might order one for my fiance. He is my swim partner and when i met him he held his nose whenever he was under water. I have been slowly teaching him but this could be very helpful!

The best idea for chlorine pools is probably to avoid getting water in your nose altogether, because chlorine is obviously not very healthy inside your body. But without a noseplug or physically holding your nostrils closed with your fingers, you cannot stop water from entering your nostrils/nasal cavity unless you stay upright and very still so the air trapped in your nose doesn't escape and get replaced with water, or blow air out from your lungs whenever you move. Water in your nose is painful, but you can get used to it over time.

You CAN, however, stop the water from travelling from your nose into your throat. To do this, you need to close your soft palate (not quite the same as pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth, though that may help). The best way I can explain closing the soft palate is to try to snore. You should feel the air being pulled through the upper back of your throat. Try to make it so that no air can get through, and hold it like that. That's your soft palate closed. It might take some practice in the water; I definitely found it hard to keep my soft palate closed when my sinuses were burning from the water/chlorine. I takes a lot of getting used to. I'd suggest trying in the ocean/a salt water pool, since that will be easier on your nose.
