So summer means more swimming and more swimming means more time to improve! What merfolk goals do you have over the summer? Things you wanna build? Tricks you wanna learn? Getting your first gig?

My goals are pretty basic for a semi new mermaid:

Learn to be able to open my eyes in water
Be able to swim with just my sinus saver
Have a go-to mermaid makeup look that lasts in water

What about you?

Those are great goals! :)
Good luck! With opening your eyes, I wish I could give you a trick. You just have to go for it. Sometimes it helps to do it with nose clips for the first few times. That way you can just focus on your eyes and not worry about your sinuses.

I have 2 goals for this summer. One is specifically mermaid related, the other not so much

1) tone up. I am currently around 20% body fat. I want to increase my muscle mass and lower my body fat enough that I am negatively buoyant. I still float about 6inches below the surface

2) be able to lift my fluke over my head! This thing is a beast! I am getting better at lifting it on land, but have yet to flip it over my head in a classic mermaid pose.

I have 2 as well:

Increase my breath hold so that I can easily achieve 25m underwater. Right now I can do it sometimes, but usually I can only go 3/4 of the way.

Learn to do bubble rings. I can do the bubble hearts and bubble kisses, but the rings are really hard.

I haven't been able to do bubble hearts yet, it's a matter of timing. :/

I have seen Camaroshelby make hearts at the 2014 Texas meet. May have pix of that floating around on my Dropbox. I can't do it and probly won't ever try.

My unrealistic goal is to be able to breach like a whale or dolphin. That'd be a cool hippocampus talent. *does her obnoxious horse laugh* I don't think I have any "real", achievable goals. Edit: that's a lie. I do want to play with make-up and see how I look.

Summer mer goals.... well same as Mermaid Aria, need to stay longer underwater and to go deeper. Oo wait and shooting out of the water, 1 day.

Get a nice tail for my Lunocet monofin.
Swim with other Mers. 9 months into this hobby, and I have yet to do that, except for a few minutes at an introductory class.

Hold my breath longer (I used to be great at it, but years without a pool took its toll, sadly), and stay under longer (learning to compensate for the buoyancy of both monofin and my own frame). And besides that, try to get in the pool at least once a week!

I'd love to make a fabric tail this summer. I have had a monofin for about a year now? Maybe longer. I want my first tail skin!

Today I went for my first mermaiding practice of the summer, fighting foot cramps and blowing bubbles! It was so relaxing! I do have to take care of my mermaid hair better this summer! Last year was damage central. :(

my goals are to:

1. get to my ideal weight

2. swim with my new mono fin as much as possible.

3. work and save up money for a mermaid tail.

4. get stronger so I can swim better since I quit the swim team last year.

yeah thats pretty much it.

Added a Finis Foil monofin to my collection of bi-fins (Finis Floating fins, Oceanways Professional fins) so that I can do more dolphin kicking with both kinds of fins. The bi-fins enable me to do regular swimming workouts with full arms strokes; where the Foil helps me strength my dolphin kicking. The Foil adds variety to my swim workouts.

Its winter over here.
My plans for the summer is to, finish off the fish bras which I put aside because I got lazy! Repair some stitches on my Haivana Green tail, and my Aloha Tail which I brought back into play because I wanted something orange, and had to refit for my Foil, glue those swim fins onto my Sun Tail monofin and finally, add on some scary fins onto my Dragon Tail which is also from Sun Tail.

My goals are pretty low key, like not get any more bad sunburns! I want to buy a clam shell t-shirt to wear when swimming outside and some tinted swim goggles so I don't have to choose between goggles and sunglasses. I also need to make a new fabric tail as my current one went through the dryer and the spandex suffered for it. Oops!

Solving merfolk sunburn problems is definitely my summer goal too. I may be sewing up my own custom rash guard to protect my skin. Also thinking about how to make more of a dance bodysuit or something to wear with my mermaid bras.

I am the queen of sunburns.
But I willingly go without sunscreen. So I have only myself to blame.
If I want to avoid burning or tanning dramatically I find that a sport/waterproof spray sunscreen works wonders. I use SPF 15, and it seems to work. But I already have a base tan.

Goals for the summer:

1) Breath better! I have severe asthma (mentioned that in another thread) and I'm tired of having it get the best of me. I'm going to kick my fitness into high gear and increase my lung strength for mermaiding and just life in general.

2) Work on my technique. I'm a new mer so I'm still not at 100% with just swimming with a monofin. I think 30 minutes of swimming a day (roughly 20 minutes in laps, 10 for rest/easy freestyle) will help dramatically.

3) Get crafting! I now have two tails in different colors - one in pastels and one in reds and purples. I need to craft tops and accessories for them. This is just for fun, but I may start selling what I make in time! I make jewelry all ready, so this isn't a huge leap! :)

4) Save up for a simple underwater video camera. I'd love to take images of how I'm doing and what I need to work on to make it look more organic. This would help immensely!

Spent 2 hours in the water yesterday and I felt great afterwards. Well, atleast until around 7pm then I started getting sore. The Chesapeake bay was beautiful yesterday. I've lived here all my life and have never seen the water so clear before. Usually you can barely see you hand in front of your face. Yesterday I could see around me atleast 10-15 feet and it was awesome actually being able to see all of the fish swimming with me.

#1 goal for me is to make a huge dent in the 100lbs I need to loose. Haven't been able to really do any exercise since the accident just over 2 years ago due to the wound on my leg and it taking forever to close up and not be too thin.

other then that would be breath control and more experience with my mono. My balance is wonky and sitting in the surf trying to put on a mono.. Ugh, took me close to 30 minutes just to get it on. Used to be an old driftwood tree at my spot that made a perfect bench about 2 feet from the water at low tide and somewhere over the past 2 years someone decided to remove it.

So my summer mer goals so far have been a bit odd, nothing I expected to be able to accomplish this summer but pleasantly surprised I did. I got my first fabric tail which was amazing, the finfun clownfish! Since it's orange it doesn't clash with any of the black/white/orange koi stuff I had already planned too.

I painted some beautiful seashells for tops which are up in our etsy store (https://www.etsy.com/shop/YourGeekEmporium?ref=hdr_shop_menu) waiting for a lovely merfolk to buy them. Getting that up and running a bit more would be an excellent way to fund my mermaiding.

I haven't been able to advance much on breath holding or using my sinus saver because of my issues with my wisdom teeth removal, but hopefully that'll be taken care of soon! I have yet to practice my makeup either...But thanks to one of Raina's videos I saw another mer practicing bubble hearts and realized I am supposed to have my fingers facing OUT away from my face instead of inward so I was able to make bubble hearts! It's all part of my first swim in a tail video, which was really amazing to watch having never seen myself in a tail before! I spent almost the whole day I got my tail in the pool and even had a lady in the apartment pool with us ask me about tails and tell me how she follows "those girls with the latex tails" on instagram, I think she legitimately may look into a tail!

How's everyone doing on their goals?
