Children and Mermaid tails

Okay, so I'm just getting into this thing and have a few things lined up (A couple appearances for free at public events, library readings, a photoshoot, that type of thing) and since people have seen my handmade fabric tail, I have a story slash question

At a recent event my mother and I were selling at, I was approached by a very sweet grandmother who wanted advice on tail. I recommended a better learning monofin (with an easy snap off in case she was struggling since her Granddaughter is only eight) before getting the full tail and fin set. She seemed surprised that I went into recommending tails and fins, sure that these were more of a pool toy.

I took the time to explain that while you didnt have to be swim team material, she shouldn't be alone in a pool with it as she's going to have her knees, calves, ankles and feet strapped in together.

She didn't seem to realize that it limited how we normally swim?

So of course, as I do more events, I'm going to get more and more of these questions about how to have their friends and kids become mermaids too. What's your approach when this happens? How do you go about calmly explaining to others about tails and fins? Do you give warnings? Or just advice on where to start?

Any answers or opinions much appreciated (Since I think I scared that grandmother and was very adamant that the granddaughter stay in pools when she first starts out)

I think you did exactly the right thing on that one.

Just tell 'em to make sure their kid is a strong swimmer before they put them in a tail, make sure to monitor them, and quiz them on saftey stuff.

But you can tell them, to put them at some ease once you've shattered their notion of tails being toys, that no one has yet drowned in a tail. This is true.

I also go on rants about how any sort of swimming is inherently dangerous and that even walking down a flight of stairs can kill you but that doesn't mean you hide under a rock. It means you take necessary precautions and do what you can to keep yourself safe.

But I like how you handled it. Give em the name of a trainer monofin, then direct them to finfun.

I make sure to go into my story a little bit, I've been swimming basically my whole life, have had a LOT of training blah blah.
