Thought I would consolidate the things I'm working on into one place, basically because I just don't have the time to go searching all around for tailmaking threads I have underway. I will still update individual tail threads, but this is sort of a catch-all. I didn't want to start an external blog and take people out of Mernetwork.

Okay I've been up since 4am, I'm coasting on maybe four hours of sleep and I just watched the video.

The first few seconds had me like

Seriously though, I am actually kind of tripping over how amazing that new pigment is. Color changing tail??? Ohmycod, yes.



::EDIT:: Personally, I would love to a see a tail that's mostly a solid dark color (not necessarily black, but maybe like a dark purple?) but then have like fancy markings or patches or stripes that are made with the polychrome pigment. That'd look PRETTY FREAKIN NEATO I THINK.

I caught it on FB and was wide eyed and needed to watch it a few times. My little guy, curled up next to me in bed, says: "What's dat? Mermaid tail?" I said yes... And then the smart little guy proceeded to tell me how it works: "It gets closer to the Earth and turns purple. It gets closer to the sun and turns Gold." :lol:

My tail making questions thread clearly stated that this is what I was doing. It's not like I can trade mark the process, and I'm all about idea sharing.

But here's the rub...
The way I see it, you were either doing it and told me it wasn't going to work to keep the idea to yourself, or you are working with my idea and calling it your own.

Neither are very cool right?

Erm...it doesn't work when you mix it in with silicone. It gets muddy. I guess I wasn't clear between the first reply and the second. I have hit upon a way to get it to show without peeling off the topcoat.

I used The chameleon pigments in 2013, for my entry into the Merfest Tailmaking Contest in January '14. It wasn't perfect, and there have been scales that had to be replaced - and that was a pain - and have been cranking out scales by the thousands since, testing and perfecting all along the way.

I wasn't trying to deceive you, and I certainly wasn't stealing your idea.

And, quite frankly, I'm feeling rather smacked in the mouth in my own thread, now. I have read and re-read the post over and over, and I thought I made myself clear at "I use it sparingly...", but I guess not.

I was not trying to discourage you. Whether you chose to give up rather than experiment is not my fault.

I was being too touchy. I've had a lot happen in my life in the last few weeks (ending up in a wheelchair and finding out my rare condition has some really bad complications develop and now have an average life expectancy of 48 when that's 12 years away and I have 4 special needs kids to take care of) and I misunderstood you. That's no excuse though. I didn't mean to make you feel attacked, and again I'm sorry and was confused about what you said in my thread of tail making questions.

I saw your color-shifting scale on IG and was really excited to see a tailmaker figure out how to use those pigments!

As a nail addict I'm big on all things multichrome. Those pigments definitely are meant to be used over a black base. That's how they do it for the most extreme effect on cars ("chameleon" pigment topcoat over a matte black car is most common), and the same logic applies to nail color. The pigments can be mixed with other colors to some degree but they are VERY easy to muddy, and that's just applying them in paint. So seeing that super-clean shift on silicone was VERY satisfying. I can't even imagine the time it took testing to perfect this. :O_o:

I have some samples over color bases, too, but black works best! I want to make a larger sampling of scales to see how they look piled together, but I have tails to finish, first!

It wasn't easy to perfect, and I still have to run some durability tests.

I've been messing around a bit with iridescence in silicone things like starfish, but I'm not even brave enough yet to go full color shift. I'm practically drowning with excitement right now over the thought of my own tail using similar pigments!

Oh, and here is a fun fact that all us mermaids should REALLY love!! There is a trick for photographing chromatic nail polish in a way that shows the most colors possible: put your nails underwater! The refraction of the water actually bends the light in such a way that you see more colors at once. So a true multichrome tail has the potential to look STUNNING underwater. :eyepop:

Is that big chunks of glitter? I always thought that it wasn't durable in silicone because the glitter cut itself out?

Or did you find a secret magical way around that? Haha

Not a secret magical way, really...you just use the chunky glitter in places that won't flex much. The center of the fluke isn't going to be manipulated like the body of the tail would be, and all the chunky glitter in my personal fluke is all in place after 2+ years, so this placement should be fine. I wouldn't use the chunky stuff at the end of the fluke where it would be likely to cut its way out of the rubber.

This is still in the mold, so you're actually seeing the inside part of the fluke - and I haven't cleaned up the areas around the swirls just yet...still a lot to do!

Before I started working with silicone I didn't like pink. It was OK, occasionally, but I could never label it a favorite color by any means. Then I used the "pink gold" pigment. Then I found the "flamingo pink" pigment. Then I saw your pink scales.

Now it's definitely a favorite.

Also, the fluke came out of the mold this shiny...no topcoat!

I've been remiss in keeping up this thread, I've been so busy trying to finish tails, and some personal issues - my landlord wants to sell the house I rent, I've been here more than 13 years, and he's been a total pain in the ass!

I'm hoping to get some accessories - scale bracers, Lilypad tops, resin shells for tops, headpieces, hybrid tails, silicone flukes with built in monofins for make your own tails...all kinds of stuff - up in my Etsy shop (link in my signature), and I am SO close to finishing FOUR TAILS!

No, I didn't put them up - I'm still trying to engineer them to bring the cost own and still be pretty and durable. As they are, I'd have to sell them plain and unfinished at no less than $40 a pair. They're pretty labor intensive!
