I don't want to ask a lot of potentially very personal questions, so all I can say at this point is to not let him see your interest in mermaids for now.

Honestly he's just scared. You should sit him down and maybe find some local people that are mer people men would help if you could find some. Have them come over to your house; sit him down and educate him. He's scared because he knows nothing about it. the unknown frightens people. (Like horses people have bubbles , horses have bubbles. When something new or unknown comes into that bubble they go into flight or fight mode. Humans are the same. WE go into flight or fight. If something new comes into our world most avoide it because they are afraid of the unknown the whatif's. So just be calm and help him Understand that unknown and what'fis) Tell him the pros of being apart of him. Make a list before you talk to him of why you are interested in it what You could get out of it if you do this. *like exercise, meeting friends, getting Out and enjoying life. Meeting a girl -winks- * Talk to him be Open allow him to ask questions even throw a temper but don't what ever you do raise your voice at him; stay calm and collected. That will show him in his eyes you are sure of what you want and your an adult by not yelling back and acting like a child ya know? Be prepared for alot of What if's do a mock run through with a friend if you can. It would help if you could get your mom on your side to talk to him as well about your interest in this

My advice would be to avoid the mer idea for a bit but focus on the sports part. When I first started my parents thought I was really weird for wanting to be a fish. So I started in the free diving section. From there I got my monofin not for a tail just to free dive. Currently a year later they are finally letting me get a tail. If he won't let you be a fish then your best bet is to work on your diver skills for when you do get your tail. Good luck

There is freediving, monofinning, alls sorts of sports with great health benefits.
Swimming is hardly a "girl thing", is it?

A tail can be just a fun thing on the side to add flavor to a sport, or underwater photographs.

And tails can be very manly when combined with the right accessories (tridents, polearms, hooked weapons, fake sharp teeth necklaces, etc) as well :p

All I can say differently to the above is that lying is always going to be a tricky thing to do. I think if you sit him down with the pretense that you don't want to argue and just want to explain why. Explain what you love about it, explain that there are plenty of straight mermen on the community, the health benefits, the enjoyment you get from it. He is your dad. I think he was probably just shocked. I am sure he has done things in his life that his parents didn't agree with. Explain to him that this is something you want to do, even if it isn't something he would do for himself.

Thanks to all the people here who wrote and tried to help. While he calmed down, he won't listen to my explanations of the forums cause he thinks i could invent fake accounts and write compassionate stuff just to get out of the sticky situation.

And while people here told me to look for mers in my area, i think i'm the only one in my whole country XD (Dominican Republic). Merfolk is not something that people can explain here easily without getting the weird looks. While the idea to find a local mer was good, there are none, so if someone can, "somehow", come here, i would be glad XD

Half a world away and the same kind of reactions. Started build my tail and OMG the reaction was totally contentious.
I too straight guy. Family here and from out of state calling to question my sanity. Geez! What I don't get is none of these people that complain do anything with me in the water anyway.
Joining teams to play children games is OK, football, baseball... Social groups around mythical sea people- Lookout.
What till your 18 or whatever is considered the adult independent age then go for it. If it comes up with Dad again just tell him there's cute mermaids out there to meet and leave it at that. Till then you can locate others who share your imaginative direction and enjoy their company.
Never let anyone dictate your dreams. Save your money for a tail suitable to be inspiring.
