Seams on a Tail?

Just curious to see if people prefer the side seams in neoprene and neoprene/silicone tails or if they would be interested in one seam down the middle back of the tail with no side seams?

Hi moongazer, umm a very interesting question, I have to say I don't like seams and to look at it, just put me 📴. I have seen seams that is done very well and you can't almost see it, but it is still there lol

I'd say one seam down the back. That way it could also be hidden with fins! If not, then the mer could simply say it is their spine.

Personally I think its less noticeable on the sides since the sides aren't the focal point of the tail. When its down the back I feel like you need a dorsal or something to cover it up since people will be looking right at it when they watch you swim.

I tend to put a single seam down the back in my tails. That way as long as you aren't starring straight at your fishy backside with the camera the seam doesn't show up in photographs.

Thank you all so much for your input so far! As much as we want tails with no seams, all tails have to have a seam somewhere. Especially when it comes to neoprene or fabric like tails. There is really no getting around that unfortunately!

Yeah come to think about it, it would be a lot better down the back and you are right you can say that, it's the spine and the fin running on it. Umm never thought of it that way. Lol at least you know the fin is in the middle.

Personally, I think that as long as you hide the seams well enough, it doesn't really matter where they're placed. You should probably do whatever you're most comfortable with, construction-wise!

Also, Sean, I gotta say your comments weren't terribly helpful. All tails have seams. Even silicone tails have seams. Even if you do a movie-quality full body cast fully sculpted tail, your mold will still have to have seams! Which you would then have to trim the flashings from, etc etc.

Moongazer was asking which type people tend to prefer in terms of look or feel. I think it's safe to assume she's aware of the fact that most people prefer for their seams to be well-hidden.

I think if you can do a back seam but camoit with Dorsal that would be amazing. like if u do the dorsal beside the seam, so when it flows of covers of hides it would look amazing

Yes but you can make it cute, like stevi did with her fish butts. Or you can have the tail have very placed seams. Can't really touch on it more then that. I'm just seeing what people want when it comes to the body of the tail.

I prefer one seam down the back so I can sew in a dorsal fin. The fluke is sewn the regular way, with two side seams then sewn onto the tail body.

I have yet to figure out a way to make the one seam tail including the fluke, as a whole piece.

This how I feel. As i spend more time swimming than really caring about pics, the back side seam would be very obvious compared to on the side. Of course if you are taking pics the back seam wouldn't be too noticable but for my purpose I would go with side.

I did my fabric tail with a single seam hidden by a dorsal fin. I find it difficult to describe how I did it so I'm just going to use drawings. (If anyone wants to use these to help make a tail, feel free!)

I made the fluke cover with side seams and hid them with similar 'fins' in a different colour. I used necklace type clips to close the fluke at the end and hid the stitches on the outside with beads. I used a few individual stitches to join the body to the fluke and hid those with beads too.

The dots are the stitches/beads. Just make sure the fluke cover comes up high enough under the body and you don't need a lot of stitches to hold it in place.

These are the best photos I have of the tail. If anyone would like to see it in more detail, I can get some more photos tonight.


Back of tail (with me in it!). The body is deep orange with orange and brown dorsal fins. The fluke is brown with orange trails. Not so easy to see on dry land, unfortunately.

Its really easy to make a one seam tail. Grab the fabric and pinch it around your legs, making a tube or a huge one seam sock. To tighten it, pull the sides together where you want a tighter fit, use washable crayon to mark where the sides meet. Sew in the seams. Make your fluke the normal way where you sew the two sides, then pin it in place and sew.

In some mer tails with backside seams that I have seen over the years, the makers attached a long dorsal fin to hide the seams from the very start of the tail to the heels...Personally I never liked that look as I thought it made them look more like Godzillaesque or an island iguana with stiff back spines - eg.The 2004 Filipino CBS network TV Series 'Marina'.If dorsal fins/ back fins are gonna be attached then of course_The Godmother of all mer movies- Splash had got it just right as Hannah's long dorsal fin started from just below her butt area and not from the start of her waist...Have u guys ever thought about this aspect too?!!...I'd love to hear your views...so lemme know [emoji38][emoji2]

Contemporarily speaking, Replicas of the Splash tail that Mermaid Melissa and Mermaid Draca have worn have also got them stay true to the original..What a way to give a tribute huh!!...A biggg kudos to the tail designers whoever they are. 😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
